Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed November 9, 1909. Serial No. 526,974.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, IRFJNFJE ALEXIS CHA- VANNE, of 58 Rue de lArcade, Paris, France, manufacturer, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Roller and Breast Mills, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention has for its object a roller and segmental breast mill comprising one roller for each pass. I
According to this invention the segmental breast as well. as its adjustment and security devices are carried by a removable casing which is maintained in position against abutments' upon the frame and which can be moved aside in one piece without disturbing-the position of the segment. On the removal of the casing the roller can easily be got at either for cleaning or for dismounting. This arrangement allows the segment to be adjusted by placing the casing against a model or dummy made in the shape of the roller and abutments on the frame against which the casing is to rest. Further an entirely closed mill can be formed by giving to the frame and to the casing solid walls forming continuations of each other to form a covering completely surrounding the working parts. The casing then closes an opening formed in the walls of the frame for the removal of the roller.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one method in which the invention can be carried into effect to form a double mill.
' In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the mill one of the casings carrying a segmental breast being shown separated from the frame. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are respectively sections on the lines A-A. BB, and C-C in Fig. 2 to a larger scale. Fig. 6 is a portion of a longitudinal section ofthe casing on the line D--D of Fig. 1. also on an enlarged scale.
As shown in the drawings the mill is com posed of a metal frame 1 of the general shape indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Each of the grinding rollers 2 rotates in front of a cooled segmental breast 3 as in the mill which forms the subject of the British Patent No. 25,609 of 1905. The frame 1 is cut away at 1 on two of its faces the openings thus formed being closed by a casing l supporting the segment 3 together with its adjustment mechanism. For this purpose the edges 5 of each casing are of the same shape as the edges 1 of the corresponding opening 1 and fit exactly on these edges. The casing is held in this position by means of four nuts 4 which it is sufficient to unscrew in order to remove it as indicated to the left of Fig. 1.
The carrier 6 of the segment 3 is sup ported by trunnions 7 in bearings 8 which can slide in guides 9 carried by the casing. Each trunnion 7 is embraced at its center by a collar 10 fast with a screw threaded adjusting rod 11 actuated by a hand wheel 12 provided with a nut and serving as a means for longitudinally adjusting the rod 11. The rod 11 which is thus adapted to be adj usted longitudinally, is locked in its various positions of adjustment by the following means The wheel 12 rests against the screw threaded sleeve 13 with the interposition of a washer provided with a feather and sliding in a groove on the rod 11. The sleeve 13 passes through a nut 14 fast with the casing 41; one end of said sleeve bears against the bearings 8 and is moved by the actionof the wheel 15 fixed to its other end. A counter nut 16 provided with a lever takes up the play of the sleeve 13 and. when regulated keeps it immovable.
The segment carrier 6 is provided with an arm 17 which rests against a nut 18 engaging a guide 19; a screw rod 20 actuated by a hand wheel 21 allows the rod to be moved. axially. The segment carrier 6 is further subjected to the action of one or more springs 22 supported against the casing l through the intermediary of a supporting disk 31 held at the lower end of rod 23 ending in a flexible portion 24: fixed to the carrier 6. The action of this spring maintains the arm 17 against the nut 18. r
The assemblage of parts other than the segment and its carrier, carried by the casing 4, allows the position of the segment with respect to the roller to be regulated and all backlash to be taken up. This regulation may be effected even after the. casing 4 has been detached from the frame 1 by.
making use of a dummy or model 25 (Fig. 5) against which the casing 4: is applied and which has for this purpose the same exact form and contour as the portion; of the frame against which the casing bears or is brought into position in operation.
The angular adjustment of the segment 3 is first given by means of the nut. 18 bearing against the arms 17 5 by moving the hand wheel 21. The segment 3:is thus adjusted tends to rotate the segment around its pivotal axis. Then the segment is brought into 5 contact with the false roller 2 by the screw. threaded sleeves 18 by turning the hand wheels 15, any play of the trunnions in the bearings 8 having been previously stopped by the aid of the screw'threaded rods 11" actuated by'the hand wheels 12. Thecasing is then placed in position'on the frame and fixed bym'eans of the screws 4. The segment 3is then placed in the workingposition with respect to the roller by moving it "more or'less away fromthe rollerby the aid ofthe rod and hand-wheel 21, j The springs-22's'erve, besidestheir action previously described, as yielding safety member's for allowing the segment to move away from the roller in case of the passage of a hard ,bodyior of clogging.
The trunnions 7 are hollow and are pro- "vided withpipes and cjocks 26 for the purpose .of obtaining a waterforjother circula- 25 tion between the segmentB and its support 7 6; these pipes pass through oval holes 26 formed inthe side wallsof the casing. The casing is closed by means of aprons 27 'and28. formed offlexible material such as thin metal, fiber, 1eather,'etc.,in such a manner as to protect the inclosedparts from dust. The top of the casingis cutaway at '29 and the opening thus formed is closed by a door 30'which allows the grinding to be observed. I

In a roller-and-segment breast-mill, a segment provided with trunnions, and bearings for said trunnions arranged to slide transversely to the axis of the trunnions, in combination with adjusting screw-threaded rods having collars to embrace said trunnions, a threaded hand-wheel engaging the screw-threaded portion of each adjusting rod, a threaded sleeve bearing against each bearing for the trunnions, a counter-nut threaded thereon and bearing against the casing in which the sleeve is threaded, and a second threaded hand-wheel engaging each of said threaded sleeves and adapted to lock the first threaded hand-wheel against rotation.
