To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GUsrAvUs A. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Coo-k and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rotary Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rotary engines and has for its object to pro* vide a new and improved device of that sort.
It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein,

The drum A which is rigidly mounted upon the shaft A1 rotates within the cylindrical casing A2, has the two diametrically opposed lugs or bosses A3 upon its outside, each provided with the movable strip or leaf At held in Contact with the inner wall of the casing A2 by the spring A5. Steam to operate the drum is admitted through the passageway B to the distributing chamber B1, thence through the valve chamber B2 in which is located the rotary valve B3, through the steam port B4 into the chamber B5 behind the rotatable abutment BG and thence into the space B7 between the drum and the wall of the casing. The abutment BG is adapted to'remain at all times in contact with the surface of the drum and to change in its position to correspond with the contour of that surface. The exhaust pipe C communicates with the chamber G1 which in turn communicates with the spaces C2 C3V between the surface of the drum and the wall of the casing. Both the drum A and the abutment BG extend completely across t-he interior of the casing and are provided with the centrally located sect-ions D, D1 such that their coefficient-s of expansion are different from the remainder of the body in order to prevent binding owing to changes in temperature. The shaft A1 rotates within the journals E in the walls of the casing A2 and is provided with the packing E1 and packingglands E2. The fly wheel or governor F is rigidly mounted upon the shaft A1 and has pivotally mounted upon two diametrically opposed lugs F1, the levers F2 F2 provided each at one end with the weights The lever F2 has pivotally mounted at the end farthest removed from the weight Ft, the link FG pivotally mounted at its other end upon the screw F7 which is located upon the lever F3 intermediate the weight F4 and the lug F1. The link F8 is mounted at one end upon the screw F7 and engages at the other the pivot FD in the link F10 which is pivotally mounted upon the lug F11 upon the fiy wheel F. The connecting rod G leads from the pivot FD to the lever G1 which is adjustably mountedupon the valve stem G2 to operate the valve B3. The operation of the valve may be adjusted by means of the screw I-I in the wall of the fly wheel which controls the tension in the springs, and by means of the bolt K and nut K1 to vary the position of the crank Gl upon the valve stem G2, thus varying the relative positions of valve and fiy wheel.
It will be evident that while I have shown in my drawings an operative device, still many changes might be made both in size, shape and arrangement of parts without departing materially from the spirit of my invention. I wish, therefore, that my drawings be regarded asin a sense, diagrammatic. V
The u-se' and operation of my invention are as follows :nSteam is admitted through the steam pipe into the distributing chamber, passes thence into the valve chamber about the valve, out through the steam ports to exert pressure upon the rotatable abutment, thus forcing the 4abutment in close contact at its outermost point against the surface of the drum. The steam then passes on into the space formed between the drum and casing and exerting pressure upon one of the pivotally projecting lugs or bosses 1 and the leaf carried by such lug, exerts a `rtangential rotating force. `determined point the rotation of the fly At some prewheel by means of the eccentric location of the connecting rod rotates the valve to close the ports, .thus permitting the steam to act expansively as is usual in the reciprocating engine. provide a rotary engine in which the steam is used expansively and inl which by ar rangement of valve mechanism and ygovernor, I can cut 0E the steam supply at any desired point and in which I can cause the governor to reduce the speed or control it in any desired manner.

l; The combination with a rotary engine of a governor comprising a fly-wheel, a plurality of levers pivotally mounted on oppoweights at one end of each of said levers, a link between them, a toggle joint connection, oneend of said toggle pivotally mounted on one of said levers, the other on the iiy-wheel, and a connection from said toggle to an engine valve.

The combination with a rotary engine of a governor comprising a fly-wheel, a plurality of levers pivotally mounted on oppoweights at one end of each of said levers, a link between them, springs in engagement with said Weights adapted to resist their outward displacement, a toggle joint connect-ion, one end of said toggle pivotally mounted on one of said levers, the other on the iiy-wheel, a connection from said toggle to an engine valve, and meansfor adjusting the tension of said springs. l 4. The combination with an oscillating valve of a governor therefor, comprising a ily-wheel, levers pivotally mounted thereon at fulcrums intermediate their two ends, weights upon one end of each of said levers, a pin intermediate the fulcrum` and the weight on one end of said levers, a link pivotally mounted upon said pin and pivotally mountedupon `the free end of the other lever, a link pivotally mounted upon said pin and in pivotal connection at its other end with' a link pivotally mounted upon the fly-wheel, a connection between the free end of the link mounted upon 'the iiy-wheel and the valve, and elastic means resisting the outward movement of saidv weights, said means comprising leaf springs rigidly mounted at one end upon the fly" wheel. j
