RUFFIN ROLES, OF CARY, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT 1N PLows.
Specification forming paxt of Letters Patent No. 103,663, dated May 31, 1870.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, BUFFIN RoLEs, of Cary,
i in the county of XVake and State of North Carolina, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in plows for working new, rocky, or sandy soil, and for cultivating corn, cotton, and tobacco, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in which- Figure lrepresents a side view of the standard, with the mold-board, share, and landside attached. Fig. 2 is a view of the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view at a', Fig. 5, showing the standard and mold-board. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the standard and parts attached, as
Fig. 5 is a qua-rtering view of the standard, and a full front View of the mold-board and share. Figs. 6 and 7 are views of the two additionalmold-boards.
The object of my invention is to provide a plow simple and durable in its construction, and which will answer all of the various requirements of the farmer.
My invention consists in the peculiarl form and construction ofthe standard, mold-boards, share, and landside, for the purpose of securing them together.
To enable others to make and use my improved plow, I will proceed to describe its construction and use, referring by letter to the accompanying drawings.
The several parts in which are comprised my improvements are the standard A, land side B, share C, and mold-boards D D D.
The standard A is cast of iron. At its lower end it has a recess, a, Figs. 2 and 4, for the purpose of allowing the landside B to be attached to it, so as to come ilush with its outer surface. On the opposite side it is anged, as shown in Fig. 4, for the purpose of forming a suitable support for the mold-boards D and share C. At the upper part of this iiange is a shoulder, b, to aid in securing the moldboard to its place. Near'the top end of the standard-is an oblong hole, c, and a short distance below is a projecting shoulder, d, the purpose of these being to afford a convenient way of securing it to the plow-beam. The mold-boards D D D are cast of iron. They are of the ordinary curved form, to which form the flanged portion of the standard is made to correspond. They are provided with a lip, e, (shown in Figs. 2 and 3,)
which forms au acute angle with the under' side, and iits a similar angle formed by the standard and its ilanged portion. At the upper edge they have a notch, f, which is of such form as to fit the shoulder b.
A square countersunk bolt-hole is cast in the mold-boards, and a hole to match these is made in the flange of the standard, for the purpose of bolting the same to it.
The share C is constructed so as to t the lower edge of the mold-boards, and has a lip, g, like them, made to fit the angle of the standard. A countersunk hole is also cast in this, and one corresponding to it in the iiange of the standard, to admit a bolt.
The landside B, Figs. l. 2, and 4, is also cast, and is formed so as to fit the recess a in the standard A, to which it is held by means of a bolt.
It will be seen that by mymode of construction the several parts are each held in place by means of a single bolt, as the peculiar form of the standard, mold-boards, share, and landside are such as to furnish the additional means of fastening necessary.
The shoulder a on the standard A, to which the upper edge of the mold-boards are fitted, the lip c on the mold-boards iitting around the angle of the standard, and the lower edge conforming to that presented by the upper edge of the share, together with the bolt, all combine to hold the mold-board in its place. The share tted to the lower edge of the mold` boards, and its lip g passing around the edge of the standard, is, when bolted, held securely to its place. The landside, bolted to the standard in the recess cast to receive it, is thus rmly fastened. Three mold-boards are furnished, varying in size, so as to suit the kind of work necessary to be done.
It will be seen that the several parts of my plow are all cast ready to go together, Without any machine-work or fitting.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The share @,mold-board l), and landsid B, constructed as described, for mutual support.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afdX my hand and seal.
