A structural embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, whereof Figure 1 is a side elevation, with parts in section, of the improved device; .Fig. 2 is a cross section through the same; Fig. 3 is a cross section of a modified form of traveler; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the guide ring, this ring being omitted in Fig. 2.
The traveler carrier is here shown as in the form of a rectangular frame A, A, the lower member of which is provided with a central ring m, and the upper member with a correspondingly-located bearing 7). The spindle passes loosely through the ring mand carries a fixed collar h, between which parts is interposed a spring designed to exert its pressure downward upon said ring. Atits upper end, said spindle is provided with a bearing n shaped for engagement with bearing 5. The usual bobbin is carried by the spindle and is fixed to the same in any preferred manner. The rail D is formed with an opening E through which the carrier extends.
The traveler or thread guide f may be of many forms, one of which is shown in Fig. 2, and another in Fig. 3. In its first-men- -tioned form, it comprises an open wire frame of sutlicientdiameter to surround the bobbin when full, which frame is designed to travel upon the carrier, being provided for that purpose with small sleeves 1' slidable upon the carrier sides. Its vertical position is controlled by arms or projections .2 connected. to said sleeves and projecting between rail D and the guide ring T which latter they are adaptedto engage from beneath, said guide ring T being attached to the rail D by the screw 6 and being also provided with lugs 70 which rest upon said rail. The spindle is driven in the usual manner through the medium of a pulley Z, or the like, and, in rotating, has a tendency to rotate the carrier, owing to the frictional contact between the two. I Hence, the traveler is capable not only of vertical motion,
'which is controlled by ring D, but also of a rotary motion around the spindle.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the traveler is pivotally-mountedadjacent its outer end on the carrier, and is designed to bear intermediate its ends against the bobbin, being preferably provided at its said outer end with a small air-wing c, or similar device, whichassists in maintaining it in the position specified.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination, with a rectangular carrier frame having its top member provided with a central bearing and its bottom member with a central ring; of a spindle passed loosely through said ring and provided at its upper end with a bearing removably engaged with the first-named bearing; means for rotating the spindle; a bobbin secured to said spindle; a collar secured to said spindle in juxtaposition to said ring; and a spring interposed between said collar and ring and bearing against the latter, for rotating said carrier frame when said spindle is rotated.
2. The combination, with a spindle, means for rotating the same and a bobbin secured to said spindle; of a carrier frame mounted upon the spindle; connections between said spindle and said frame, for rotatin the latter from the former; a rail provided with an openingthrough which said carrier frame eX- tends; a guide ring mounted upon said rail and secured thereto; and a vertically movable traveler mountedon said carrier frame above the guide ring and provided with a controlling member disposed between said guide ring and rail and adapted for engagement with the former from beneath.
