UMBRELLA-HANDLE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GIUsEPPE TESTA, a subject of the King of Italy, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella-Handle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to provide a handle movable on the cane of the umbrella to form a tip retainer for the folded umbrella ribs; toprovide a simple,dura able and efficient means for maintaining the handle in adjusted position on the umbrella cane; and to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for umbrella handles to adapt the same for transfer from one handle or umbrella cane to another.

One embodimentof the present invention is disclosed in the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of an umbrella handle constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the umbrella handle partly cut away to show in longitudinal section the socket provided in the handle and the attachment mounted therein, the handle being disposed in operative position to hold the umbrella ribs; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of an attachment shown as detached from the handle and as connected with the umbrella cane, the parts of the attachment being shown in the position assumed thereby when the umbrella'ribs are released; and Fig. 1 is a detail view showing the friction slide and latch for maintaining the handle in adjusted position.

As seen in the accompanying drawings, the attachment embodying the present invention comprises a body portion 9 having externally formed thereon a screw thread to register with screw threads provided at the end of a socket 10 formed in the handle 11. The umbrella handle 11 is in other respects similar to those of ordinary construction. The body portion 9 is provided with an ex tended tube 12 to serve as a guide and to coact with the split ends of a sliding tube 13. The limit of movement of the tube 13 within the tube 12 is determined by the length of the slots 14: formed in the opposite sides of Specification of Letters Patent.

16, 16 is sufficiently strong to form a substantial and heavy brake for the tube 13 upon the tube 12. When the tube 13 is moved in the tube 12 to extend the flanges 17 beyond the end of the said tube 12, as seen in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the flanges 17 form a substantial lock to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the tube 13 from the tube 12 and the handle of the umbrella.

Extended from the forward edge of the body portion 9 is an annular flange which forms a cup-like tip retainer 18. The tip retainer 18, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, extends about the grouped ends of the

The attachment is secured to the handle 11 by means of the screw thread on the body portion 9. It is secured to the umbrella cane 20 by means of the pin 21 which is driven through perforations formed in the cane 20 and in the opposite sides of the tube 12, as seen best in Fig. 3 of the drawings. When it is desired to remove the attachment from the handle 11 this may be accomplished by unscrewing the handle from the body portion 9. hen it is desired to remove the attachment from the cane 20 this operation is performed by removing the pin 21 and withdrawing the tube 12 from the cane 20.

When constructed and arranged as described and as shown in the accompanying drawings, the operation of an umbrella handle is as follows: The umbrella ribs 19 being drawn together in the position shown in Fig. 1, the handle 11 is forced forward until the tip retainer 18 extends over to hold in position the ends of the ribs 19. WVhen it is desired to release the ribs 19 preliminary to hoisting the umbrella the handle 11 is thrown backward, the

16, 16 contracting and extending within the tube 12, forming a friction hold thereon. The umbrella is now handled as in ordinary constructions. In the position of the handle shown in Fi 1, where the ends of the ribs 19 are bridle the flanges 1T, 17 extend beyond the end of the tube 12 and hold the said tube 12 against accidental withdrawal ofthe tube and parts connected therewith.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, an umbrella handle having a socket provided with screw threads adjacent the entrance end thereof; an umbrella cane; a split tube rigidly connected to said cane the outer end of said tube being split and set to flare, thesaid outer ends having outwardly spread flanges; and a guide tube to slidingly hold said split tube,

said guide tube having at the outer end a screw threaded section to register with the threads of said handle, said guide tube being further provided with a tip retainer for the ends of the umbrella ribs when in grouped f relation. i
