Be it known that I, ALnnn'rirs t). Snnx'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Shears and Sheet-Metal Brakes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full. clear, and exact description of the ame. reference be ing had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specificat on. and to the numerals and figures of reference marked thereon, in which-- Figure 1 is a front side elevation. is an end view showing transverse section 0 the power shaft. After the knife 23 has cut the strip desi ned to be folded it is necessary to move t is brake die 25 downward and independent of the downward movement of the knife. This downward movement of the brake die is brought about by means of the cams 26 and the intermediate mechanism between said cams and the head carryin the brake die 25. The cams are so forms that the propertimed movement will be imparted to the knife and brake die to first cut the metal and second to form the metal thus cut. As the brake die 25 moves downward it comes against the up er surface of the sheet of metal cut by the nife, thereby forcing the metal through the slot 84, and breaking or folding the sheet into substantially the form shown in Fig. 8.
It will be understood that there should be no relative movement between the knife or shear blade 23 and the head 20 and its tlange 22 after said knife has been brought to its proper adjustment with reference to the head and in order that the strain may be taken from the clamping bolts 24, the lug bolts or set screws 49 are provided, which are arranged so that their bottom ends will bear against the to edge of the knife. This feature is best i ustrated in dotted lines. In order that the knife. can be properly adjusted the flange 22 is provided with the slots 50, through which slots the bolts 24 pass. 1
For the purpose of automaticall? elevating the treadle 43 after it has been epressed the rods 51 and 52 are provided, thecrod 51 being connected to'thetreadleand the rod h! to the bed plate 5 or its equivalent and said rods la ped and the spring 53 provided.

It will be understood that. b the peculiar arrangement of the device y means of which reci rocatiug movement is im arted to the kni e head and knife and to tie die head and brake die, that during a portion of the downward movement of the said parts they move in unison and that for another portion of their downward movement they do not move in unison, that is to say the brake die is moved downward to a point lower than the extreme downward movement of the shear and that during this further downward movement of the brake die the shear is raised up and brought to its normal position, after which the brake die and its head is brought upward to its normal position.
Havin fully described my invention what I ci aim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a machine of the class described, the combination of standards, a bed plate, a knife carryin" head, a die carrying head, a knife secured to the knife carrying head and a die secured to the die carrying head, and combined gear, cam and pitinan wheels ada ted to reciprocate said knife carrying hea and die carryin head.
2. 'In a machine of ilie class described, the combination of a bedlate, standards adapted to support said be -plate, a reciprocating knife carrying head a knife secured thereto, a reciprocating die carrying head and a die secured thereto, combined gear, cam and pitmen wheels and intermediate means ada ted to reci rocate said knife carrying hea and said ie carryin head, one revolution of said wheels comp eting one operationiof said reciprocating heads.
8. In a rnachine of the class described, the combination of a bed late. standards adapted to support said be late, a reciprocating knife carrying head, a mife secured to said head, a reciprocatin die carrying head and a die secured to sm head, combined gear, cam and itmen wheels adapted to reciprocate said eads, one revolution of said wheels completing one operation of said heads, and means for stopping said wheels at the end 'offeach revolution.
