Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES Times, a sub- ,ject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Strassburg, AlsaceLorraine, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Tanning-Drum, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to revoluble drums provided with trunnions on the drum heads.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved tanning drum arranged to relieve the heads of the drum of all undue strain and to transfer the strain directly from the rim of the drum to the trunnions.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of a drum provided at each end with a cross, the center of each cross carrying a trunnion and the ends of the arms of each cross extending over onto the peripheral face of the drum rim to hold the cross in place independent of the drum heads.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of the drum; and Fig, 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The tanning drum A consists of the usual rim A and the heads A engaging the chimes on the inner face of the rim A. The trunnions B of the drum are secured or formed on crosses C, preferably made of metal, and having wooden arms D terminating at their outer ends in angular lugs E extending over onto the peripheral face of the rim A, as plainly indicated in the drawings. Wedges G are driven between the lugs E and the rim A to properly position the trunnions B one relative to the other, that is, to bring the trunnions into axial alinement one relative to the other. The oppositely-disposed lugs E are connected with each other by connecting rods F extending exteriorly of the rim A so that the crosses are securely held in place on the ends of the drum.
By the arrangement described the strain of the rotated drum is transferred by the crosses to the trunnions B wholly independent of the heads A and consequently an exceedingly strong and durable drum is provided, at the same time the drum is not liable to leak at the heads A as the same are not subjected to undue strain. It will also be noticed that the heads A are not weakened by bolts or other fastening devices heretofore employed for fastening the trunnions B in position on the said heads.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A tanning drum provided with crosses at the ends, the center of each cross being provided with a trunnion, and the arms of each cross having at their outer ends angular lugs extending over the peripheral face of the drum rim to the plane of the drum heads, and connecting rods connecting the lugs of the oppositely-disposed arms of the crosses with each other exterio-rly of the drum rim, whereby the crosses will be held on the drum independent of the drum heads.
2. The combination with a drum, of a cross at each end of the drum, havingatrunnion at the center thereof and spaced from the head of the drum, the arms of the crosses having at their outer ends laterally projecting members extending over the peripheral face of the drum, wedges between the laterally projecting members of the arms of the crosses and the peripheral face of the drum, and rods connecting the laterally projecting members of oppositely dis posed arms of the crosses.
8. The combination with a drum, of a cross at each end of the drum and having a trunnion at the center thereof, the arms of the crosses having at their outer ends laterally projecting members extending over the peripheral face of the drum to the plane of the heads thereof, andmeans for securing the crosses in posit-ion.
