relates to bobbin boring machines, and more particuVarly to the means for presenting the blank t'o the boring devices that the latter may be enabled not only to bore theblank cr bobbin uniformly, but that the bore may extend .truly central thereof. The importance of this will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art.I especially whore the-bobbins are rotated at high speed in spinning or winding yarn, where lack of axial concentricity of the bobbin bore results in an unbalanced load upon the driving spindle with the well known effect upon the yarn being spun or wound.
lVith the above general matters in1 view the aims and purposes of t-he present invention are to pro-vide a machine with means that will positively and accurately center the blank with reference to the boring devices, all as will hereinafter more fully appear in connection with the accompanying drawings of one form of means for carrying the invention into practical effect.

The machine frame may be of any usual or desired construction, and as shown comprises a. bed 1 surmounted on supporting legs 2 and providing suitable bearings fora main driving shaft 3 which may be driven by a suitable pulley 4 actuated by a belt 5 connected to a desirable source of power,

The boring heads A and B may be as in said application, and each comprises the uprights 6, 6 extending from the carriage 7, and providing bearings 8, S for the exterior of the turning tube 9 having the teeth 10 for engaging the end of the blank and turning it during the action of the boring devices. The turning tube carries a pulley 11, Fig. l, driven by a belt 12. Within the. turning tube is the centering tube 13 having fixed thereto the collar 14, between which and the sliding collar 15 is the spring 16. Secured to the machine bed 1 are the brackets 17 to each of which is pivoted one end of a lever 18, the other ends of which engage the collars 15, and connecting each of the levers 18 with the carriages 7 are the links 19. The carriages 7 are mounted to slide on the machine bed and one is provided with the ratchet teeth 20 engaged by the toothed segment 21 pivoted at- 22 and actu-` ated by a cam 23 on the main shaft, 3, the construction being such that movement of the carriages or heads toward the center of the frame causes the centering tubes 18 to advance more rapidly t-han the. turning tubes 9, so that the centering tubes first engage and hold the blank to insure proper centering thereof and then the turning tubes engage the blank positively 4and turn it substantially as pointed out in Said prior application. lVithin the centering tube is the non-rotatable boringtool connected to one end of a lever 25 which is actuated by a cam 2G on the main driving shaft 3, as in said application.
Disposed preferably at the rear of the central portion of the machine, and sustained by the bed 1, is a hopper for containing blanks or wooden blocks, which may be of any desired shape in cross-section. In the present form of the invention the hopper comprises the end supporting legs' 27 projecting upward from the arms 28 to which they aresecured by appropriate means such asV the`bolts 29, said arms 28 being carried by the brackets 30, Figs. 2 and 3, adjustable longitudinally of the machine bed 1. In the present instance this longitudinal adjustability is secured by providing the bed 1 with a longitudinal groove 31, Figs. 2 and 3, in which is received thehea d 32 of a bolt 33 which passes through each of the brackets 30, the outer or lthreaded end of each bolt being provided with a nut 34, the construction heilig such that upon loosening the nut 3-1,

Extending forward from the supporting legs B7-of thehopper and' consequently adjustable longitudinally of the machine bed with the hopper, vare the brackets or arms 61 which provide bearings for a shaft 62 which carries the blank engaging fingers 63, Figs. 2 and 3,'the ends 64 of which' are preferably turned, as shown, and provided with rolls 65 or other blank engaging means for engaging the front surface of thelowermost blank in the hopper, the construction being such that when the lowermost blank inthe hopper is to be moved between the boring heads, the fingers 63 will take position as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and move positively with the slide 41' to positively positon the blank, las will presently appear.
The shaft 62 isA provided with a pin-lon 66v mally under-the influence of a spring 78 tending-to pull the actuatordownward, Fig. 2. It will be noted that the cam 77 has a groove or cut away-portion 79, Figl 2, and that the remainder of the cam is'substantially circular, the construction being such that when the cut away portion of the cam comes under the projection or toe of the actuator, the latter will drop in' response to the spring 78 and carry the fingers 63 into contact with the front surface of theplowermost blank inthe hopper. This action of the actuator occurs after the beginning 'of the forward movement of the slide 41 and `as the latter moves the blank-forward the fingers 63 bear forcibly but yieldingly against the front of the blank, until when the centering tube 13 has engaged the ends of the blank, the projection or toe 70 'of the actuator is lifted by the cam 71 into its upper or inoperative position, as indicated by full lines-in Fig. 2.
From the construction described it will be noted that while the end portions of the lowermost blankare sustained by the blocks' 49 to properly position the blank axis ver tically in alinement with the axis of the centering tubes of the boring heads, the ngers 63 insure'thepproper lateral or horizontal po-l sition 'of the axis and prevent deflection thereof toward the front or rear of the axial center of the centering tubes, with the result that the blank is correctly positioned between the boring heads -by the slide and fin-' dirt or' piecesofwood, and that a guide 80 may be provided for the actuator at its upper portion, if desired. f
What is claimed is:
l. In a bobbin boring machine, the combination of bobbin boring means, a hopper for containing a series of blanks to be bored, a slide for moving blanks from the ho per, blank supporting blocks carried by the slide means for adjusting said blocks toward and from each other to accord with the lengt-h of blanks to be bored, fingers mounted independently of the slide and separated a distance somewhat less than the length of the blank, means for moving said fingers into contact with end portions of the blank to hold the blank on the slide as the latter moves the blank between the boring heads, said means yielding With the blank as it is moved, and means to positively move the fingers in the same direction into inoperative position. l

In a bobbin boring machine, the combination of bobbin borin means, a ho per for containing blanks to" bored, a slide for moving blanks from saidhopper, a rod carried by the slide, adjustable blank support-t` ing blocks carried by said rod and on which the lowermost block in the hopper rests, and fingers to engage the front of the blank'and hold it on said blocks as it is moved to position for the action of the boring means.

In a bobbin boring machine, the combination of bobbin borin means, .a ho per for containing blanks to ie bored,a.sg1de for moving b anks from said hopper, a rod carried by the slide, blank supporting blocks carried by said rod, means for securing the blocks on said rod in position to sustain the end portions of the 'lowermost blank in the hopper, and fingers to engage the front of the blank and hold it on said blocks as it is 130 ing means.

In a bobbin boring machine, the combination of bobbin boring means, a hopper for containing the blank to be bored, means for moving blanks from the hopper to position for the actionof the boring means, a plurality of fingers to engage the front of the blank and hold` it centered on the said means as it is moved, a rack and inion for moving t-he fingers, a cam having ancut away portion and acting normally on said rack to maintain said fingers in inoperative position, and a spring formoving the lingers into contact with the blank when the cut away portion of the cam' is in operative position with relation to the rack.
9. In a bobbin boring machine, the combination yof boring heads, .a hopper to contain blanks to be bored, a feed slide car ryin a rod at its end portion extending longitudinally of the blanks in the hopper, blocks mounted onv said rod to support and carry the lowermost blank in the hopper, fingers adapted to engage the blank on said blocks and hold it in position thereon as the feed slide moves the blank' into position between the Iboring heads, yand means for adjusting said rod and with it the blocks carried thereon to properly position blanks of varying thickness between the boring heads when they are' moved by t-he slide between said heads.
10. In a bobbin boring machine, the combination of borin tain blanks to be ored, a feed slide having a downturned end portion, a stud carrying a blocksecured to said end portion, means for adjusting said block transversely of the plane of movement of the slide, a vrod supported by said block, blank sustai ning blocks carried by said rod on opposite sides of said first named adjustable block and adjustable toward and from each other, and fingers for holding the blank on said blocks as the feed slide moves the blank to position between the boring heads.

In a bobbin boring machine, the com- Ybination of boring heads, a hopper for blanks to be bored, a feed slide, blocks carried by the feed slide for supporting the blank as it is moved by said slide, means for adjusting'said blocks toward and from each other to adapt them to different length of blanks, and means for adjusting said blocks transversely-of the plane of slide movement to adapt them to dierent thickness of blanks. 12. In a bobbin boring machine, the cornbination of boring heads, a hopper for blanks to be bored,.said hopper having its end portions adjustable toward and from heads, a hopper to coneach other to accommodate blanks of varying lengths, a feed slide for moving a. blank f from the hopper to aposition between the n boring heads, a finger disposed adjacent 1 each end of the hopper and adjustable therewith to engage the end portions of a blank and hold it on th'e slide vas the llatter moves the blank into boring position, fand means normally holding sald fingers in inoperative position and permitting them to engage a blank before it 1s moved from the hopper.
13. In a bobbin boring machine the combination of boring heads, a hopper for blanks lation lengthwise of the blank, and means for turning said shaft and holding the lingers in normal inoperativcposition and permitting said fingers to engage the blank@ before it is moved from the hopper.

In a bobbin boring machine, the combination of boring heads, a hopper for blanks to be bored, the end .portions of said hopper being adjustable toward and frolnjz each other to accommodate blanksv of different lengths, a feed slide, a plurality of fingers for engaging a blank and moving with it as the feed slide places it in boring posi-y tiona shaft carrying said fingers in sepa- -rate relation len thwise of the blank, said shaft being sustalned from the end portions of said hopper, and means for turning said shaft and holding the fingers in normal in-j operative position and permitting said fin-7r gers to engage the blank before it is moved:
from the hopper.
15. In a bobbin boring machine, the cornbination of boring heads, a hopper, a feed slide to take a blank from the hopper and position it for boring, a finger for engaging each end of the blank and holding it on the feed slide as the latter moves the blank to said position, a shaft supported from the hopper and carrying said fingers, yielding means for causing the fingers to so act, and positive means for swinging' the fingers in a direction opposite the retreating move-r ment of the feed slide after the blank has been positioned.
