specification of Lettere Patent No. 10,360, dated January s, i854.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC CRANDAL, of Cherry Valley, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wagon-Gearing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1, is a plan or top view of the wagon, the body being taken off. Fig. 2, is also a top view .of the wagon, the front axletree and the tongue being turned out of a straight l-ine with the reach, and the top spring reach, which throws them back to their straight or proper position, being shown strained or bent for the purpose of illustrating its application and Fig. 3, is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in each of the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in so arranging the connection between the front and hind `wheels of wagons that I avoid the practical diilculties of other inventions, viz. by being enabled to use a fixed reach o-r perch, connected in the usual manner with the hind axle, and by a king or body bolt with the front one. I can draw the wagon without difculty, over obstructions meeting the rear wheels, without affecting at the same time the front ones. This is effected by means of the spring bar or partial reach placed above the. real perch, by which I am enabled to bring back the front wheels into line or track with the hind ones when thrown out, and also by steadying the tongue, prevent its swaying fromV side to side or whipping the horses and thus injuring them. I also by the employment of the additional sway bar c in combination with the adjusting spring bar &c., am enabled to keep the front axle true to its set, yet allow the spring bar or partial reach to have its full effect.
This improvement is equally applicable to the ordinary single and double reach wagons at a very slight cost.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A, represent the axles constructed and employed in the ordinary way.
B, B, are the front hounds, C is the front bolster and C, is the Vsand board PgTENT OFFICE mounted on top of the same. Between the Y Y sand board and axle an open'space is left for the main reach D, to play freely in as the front axle, &c`., are swayed from right to left. The main stiit reach D, extends from one axle to the other and is secured fast in the rear axle A. It is also connected to A', by meansof the king bolt F,`on
which it turns freely as the wagon moves from right to left. By thus having the reach connected directly to the front axle by `the king bolt, instead of by a separate pin, the'body of the wagon has no strain lbrought to bear on its four corners when the front axle and tongue are moved to the position shown in Fig. 2.
F, is the upper reach or spring bar which is attached fast to the hind bolster and also to the back hounds at a, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3. This reach is made to act as a spring for throwing the tongue from the position shown in Fig. 2, to that shown in Fig. 1, it- 'being made very thin and elastic for a great portion of its length, as seen in Fig. 2.
G, is a slot in the front end of this elastic reach, in which a fixed pin or stop g, secured in the bar it, plays freely as the carriage changes its position, the reach being kept 1n contact with the bolt by means of the staple piece o, in the manner shown inl Figs. 2 and 3, or by a flange on the screw. The object of the slot G, is to allow the front axle to be turned to the` position shown inFig. 2, and
vthereby avoid too great strain on the spring in a straight course, will instantly throw the tongue, &c., into their proper positions.
I am aware that John Jones obtained a patent dated J any. 14, 1851, which by the introduction of a helical spring and slot or, sliding bar'connecting the hounds or partial reaches (between the front and rear axles) in connection with his perch swiveling on both axles proposes to preventthe effect of whipping the horses with the tongue, and
