TYPE-WRITING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13,1912.
Original application filed October 4, 1905, Serial No. 281,326. Divided and this application filed March 8,
1910. Serial No. 547,954.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, Mauro Sonncsanr, a.
thereon.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specifieation, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, in the several views and in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the machine illustrating the carriage feeding mechanism, the upper part of the carriage being omitted; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the rear orback part of the machine Fig. 4-is a perspective view of the rear part of the machine showing the mechanism in inoperative position; and Fig. 5 is the same view showing the mechanism in'operative positionf In the drawings, 4 denotes a key lever provided with 'a key 1; which, through its component parts, is intended to depress a type lever or hammer 13. The said hammer 13 is fulcrumed on a pivot 24 carried by an arm 20'on a suspension bar 16 suspended bars successive to from the upper part 1'.) of the frame of the machine by a screw 18 in uch a mannenthat it'mayoscillate laterall This suspension ban 16 carries at its lower part a spacer 15 and a. small roller 21 onwhich bears the spacer of the adjacent bar.
On de ressing a key, and consequently the interme iate leverv'f, the spacer link 14 is drawn down and this rocks the spacer cam 15 in a manner to cause 1t to act on the adjacent roller 21-and move laterally the sus-' pension bar 16 on which said roller is mounted. Evidently this will displace all of the that which has been displaced by the key, and also the last suspension bar 35. The movemen'oof. the carriage which carries the paper ought obviously, to be proportional to the number of keys depressed. The power required for moving the carriage is supplied by a spring inclosed-within a casmg or drum 52 (Fig. 3) which may be wound up by turning the arbor 56 which acts to wind the spring through the bevel wheels 54 and 55, and which is rotated either by means of a key 58, or by means of a pedal acting through a cord wound about a drum 57 ratcheted on the arbor 56.
The drum 52 (Fig.2) is in one piece with a gear wheel 53, which gears with a wheel 59, fixed on an arbor (30 and this arbor transmits with motion to the-upper wheel 61, which latter gears with the rack 45 solid with the carriage. In order to render-the movement of the carriage always proportional to the number of type keys that may be simultaneously pressed, there is an arbor 39 (Fig. l) journaled at 40 and 41, which has an arm.42, that is designed to raise or lift up a detent '43 (Fig. l) and a special dctent l l pivoted to the detent 43 and capable of movement laterally thereof. On the said arbor39 are also two armsv 46 through which the vertical movement of a transverse bar 47 which has springs L8 that keep it' always pressed against the lever 7, gives place to the rotation of the arbor 39. From this it follows, that when the type keys are n'essed down, and\with them the levers 7 this obliges the detents and 44: to turn in a vertical plane and the detent 44: will free itself from the teeth of the outer rack 45 the moment after the detent43 shall have engaged them. This detent 43 being fixed against lateral play, prevents the rack and carriage from displacement, while the detent 44, being free, will allow a lateral displacement equal to that of the last suspension bar 35, that is to say toan extent equal to the sum of all the displacements caused by the spacers for example, two teeth as shown in Fig. 5. This displacement of the bar is allowed to the detent M by levers 5t and 50, against which a spring 49 presses.
rack a moment after the special detent -14 is engaged anew therewith.
en the syllable written is the last one I of a word, it 'would suffice, in order to-sep' arate it fromltl 1e Word that is to follow, to" ,depress alrey which is not provided with a v itype'-hammer.
- I. claim:
compr su gsuspension bars capable of move 7 ment, the last'of which receives a displace m entequal to the sum of displacements of all the bars, a carriage, a'rack on the carriage,
means actingjin conjunctionjwith the'rack, capable of operation to hold the" carriage against movement, and means engageable.
With the rack when the locking means is inthe displacement of the last extension bar.
'2. Type Writing machine in Which more keysmay be simultaneously depressed in order to Write syllables, comprising in combi nation suspension bars capableof "being swung laterally, the last .of which receives the carriage, means for moving the carriage in one direction, a detent 'movable'laterally, t position of which is controlled by the -last suspension bar, a fixed. detent' for-stopping the carriage ancl'a device for engaging the fixed detent and disengaging the movable one when the impression of the characg ters is effected. I I v 8. A device of the characterdescribed comprising suspension bars capable of swing ing moven1ent,'the last of which receives a displacement equal to the sumof displacements of all the bars, a carriage,a rack on the carriage, means for moving the carriage 7 'in one direction, and a stop device for the the last suspensionbar and caused-to engage with said rack carriage controlled by pension bars.
