In the production of woven fabrics of uniform texture, it is desirable that a proper length of cloth be taken up following'each `pick in case filling is properly laid in the shed, but that on failure to lav filling that the take-up action be tem orarily suspended in order that thin places in the cloth may be avoided. When ythe loom is stopped for some causes, the loom tender often finds Yit desirable ,or necessary tomoye the lay '25 back and forth Without passing through that I cycle of its movement where the picking action occurs, :fnd should the take-up be ef fective at Such times objectionable defects are liable to occur in the'cloth, as well understood by those familiar with the art. On
theother hand, should the loom tender move the lay through thatportion of its cycle wherein the shuttle is picked, it is equally desirable that the take-up be properly actuated following such. pick, whether effected by hand or by the usual pick or shuttle motion. Likewise when the loom has been stopped for any cause, it maybe desir able to manipulate the take-up by hand.

Mounted in suitable relation with other parts of the loom is a take-up mechanism for taking'up the cloth as it is woven, a
characterizing feature of which is thaty the actuating means therefor is in operative re lation thereto for only a movement followlng a plc part of the lay and is there-- after released or. freed from all control of the actuzting means during the .remainder of the lay movement. As well understood by those skilled inthe art, the picking mechanism is actuated to throw the shuttle when back position, such as indicated by full line in Fig. 2; andthe present inventioncontemplates that immediately thereafter the takeup mechanism shall vbe actuated to take-up the cloth and then be released or' freed, so that durin that part of the'crank vshaft movement ollowing` the'release of the take- I up mechanism, the lay may be freely moved back and forth b'y the loom tender without corresponding actuation ofthe take-up mechanism, such action by the 100m tender being frequently desirable or necessary in piecing up. or in vbringing the warp threads into the same plane for other reasons, as well understood by those skilled in the art. In Fig. 2, the full line position of the crank is intended to represent arbitrarily the position itoccupies at or about the com-A pletien of the picking movement, .and the dotted line position as that reached by the crank when the take-up for that pick has been completed, the present invention having in view a release of the take-up mechanism or at about the dotted line lsition of the crank, so that not only may tiie take-up be actuated by hand after such dotted line position of the crank has been reached, but that the lay may then be moved forward and back by hand without causing take-up of the cloth, all of which will appear from the following description of one form of menns'to' the above ends.
Supported between-suitable brackets 18 secured to the loom frame is a cloth beam 19 on which the cloth 20, Figs. 1 and 2, is wound as itis Woven, said cloth beam being preferably of the character shown, described, and claimed in a prior application, Serial No. 650,208 filed Sept. 19, 1911, though. it is to be understood, that so far as features of the present invention are concerned, the cloth beam may be of any desire-d character or construction.

As hereinbefore noted the present invention contemplates operative engagementbetween the take-up mechanism and its actuating means to properly take-up the cloth following each pick and then release of the take-up mechanism from its actuating means, so that in case the parts of the loom l be moved by hand, as for instance, if the lay be moved forward and back, no take-up of the cloth will be effected, the take-u being free at such time and capable of in( ependent hand manipulation. As one form ofmeans to this end, the actuating shaft 35 is mounted in an inclined direct-ion from front' to rear of the loom in suitable bearings 36,4 37 carried respectively by the brackets 3S, 39 and is prevented from endwise movement therein by suitable collars, as 40, 4l, one at each side of the bearing 36, Fig. 2. Connected to the transverse shaft 63 is an arm 69 adapted to be-moved to turn the shaft 63 clockwise, Fig. 2, lwhen the indicating means-70, of any desired orwell known construction, indicates absence of lling'on a detecting pick, and said parts being of Well understood construction and operation to those skilledin' the art, need not be specitically described, the general 'construction being such that shouldthe shuttle fail to lay llingon any detecting pick, the indicating mechanism 70 will be actuated by the weft hammer 71 to move the arm 69 to the right, Fig. 2, turn the shaft 63, andposition the' dog 65 of the transferring mechanism, so that upon the next beat up movement of the lay, change of filling will occur.v
Secured to-and extending downward from the transverse shaft 63 is an arm 72, Eig. 2, the lower end of which engages betweenthe collars 73 and 74 formed on arse-cured to the sleeve 48, which for identification vmay be knownas the release sleeve. Between the collar 73 and the bearing 37, Fig. 2, is a springl 75 acting normally to move and hold the release sleeve 48 toward the outer end of`the inclined actuating shaft so that the pin 44 may have its end 49 engaged with the pin Wheel in the manner heretofore explained. p
From the construction described itwill be noted that when the transverse shaft 63 is rocked clockwise, Fig. 2, on the occurrence of a filling fault in the manner-stated and filling is to be changed, the arm 72 will also -be moved to force the release sleeve 48 to the left, Fig. 2, against the stress of the spring75 to thereby carry the end of the pin 44 out of operative position with respect to the pin wheel; and when upon replenishment of filling, the fillingA is properly laid in the shed, the spring 75 will move the release sleeve to the right -to bring the end 49 of the pin 44 into operative relation with the pin wheel. It Ilwill therefore be noted that when filling is to be changed the takeup is released from its actuating means but upon successful replenishment and filling being subsequently laid in the shed, the takeup mechanism and its actuating means are again restored to operative relation.

3. In a loom, the combination of the lay,
picking mechanismand its actuating means, take-u mechanism, means act-ing to operate the telic-up mechanism after the action of the picking mechanism and then to be operatively disengaged therefrom to free the take-up mechanism, and means to also automatically disengage theA actuating means from the take-up' mechanism upon or at failure of filling.

its operating crank shaft, take-up'mecha- .ate the takeup mechanism while the crank shaft is`in back position zbetween top and bottom of its movement and then to disengage and free the take-up mechanism for the remainderof crank shaft movement.

In a loom, the combination of take-up mechanism, actuating means'- therefor including a pin wheel and pin carrying shaft, a lay, means for imparting a complete rota.- tion of said pin carrying shaft for each com` plete cycle of lay movement to impart takeaction to the take-up mechanism and then leave the take-up mechanism free.
7. In a loom, the combination of take-up mechanism, actuating means therefor including a pin wheel and pin, detector mechanism to detect the absence of filling, and means actuated by or through absence of filling to place the pin' wheel and pin into inoperative relation.
8. In a loom, a lay, take-up mechanism, actuating meansfor said take-up mechanism .including a pin Wheel and pin, a shaft for operating the pin, and means operated to separate the pin wheel and pin by or through absence of iillingrvt). ln a loom, a lay, take-up'roll, a pin wheel in operative relation with the takeuproll, a shaft, a pin carried bysaid shaft to operate the rpin wheel and effect take-up, a release device for moving said pinout of operative relation with the pin wheel, and
means operated by or through failure of filling for .moving said release device.
10. In a loom, the combination of a lay,
wheel and its actuating pin for operating the take-up mechanism, said 4pin wheel and pin being constructed and arranged to be engaged directly after the action of the picking mechanism, and then to pass out of operative engagement to free the take -up mechanism to hand manipulation.
11. In a loom, the combination of take- `up mechanism, and means for actuating said mechanism, said means including two rotary dexices rotating in planes inclined to each othci` and adapted for operative engagemcntfor a part only ofthe rotary movement of one of said members.
12. In al loom, the combination of take-up' mcchanisnaa pin wheel in operative relation therewith, an actuating shaft, an actuating pm operated by said shaft-in a circular 'path at an angle to the plane of the pin wheel, and nieans for operating said shaft.-
13. In` a' loom, the combination of a lay, a crank shaft for operating the lay, picking mechanism, take-up-mechanism,` an actuator for said take-lip mechanism operating to take up the cloth \vhen.the crank shaft is hack position between top and bottom -of its movement 'and then to free I the take-up merchamsm for the remainder of the crank s haft movement.
14. In a loom,'the combination of a lay, a crank shaft foifoperating the lay, picking mechanism, take-up mechanism, an actuatorforsai'd take-up mechanism operating to take up" thecloth when the crank shaft is in back 'position between top and bottom of its movement and then to free 'thetake-up mechamsm for the remainder ofthe crank shaft movement and means to retard accidental movement of the takeup mechanism when freed from its actuator'.
15. In a loom, the combination of filling replenishing mechanism, take-up mechanism, two rotary devices rotatable inpaths inclined to each other for actuating the takeup mechanism by engagement of said devices during a part of the rotary movement` of one of them, and means for relatively moving said two rotary devices into inoperative relation when the filling is to be changed.
16. In a loom, the combination of takeup mechanism, the lay, a crank shaft for'opcrating the latter, an inclined actuating shaft for the take-up mechanism rotating in unison with the crank shaft picking mechanism, and means carried by said actuating shaft for actuating the take-up mechanism directly following the picking action and then freein the take-up mechanism when the crank o the crank shaft is in the lower part of its movement.
17. In a loom, the combination of a lay, a crank shaft for operating the lay, a takeup mechanism, an actuator for said takeup mechanism comprising a wheel, a rotary operatin device for actuating said wheel when the crank shaft is in backposit-ion, continued rotary movement of said device in the same direction thereafter freeing said Wheel and take-up mechanism for the remainder of the crank shaft movement.
