UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GLOVER S. HASTINGS, 0F PLAINVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-THIRD TO FREDERICK D. HASTINGS, OF PLAINVILLE, CONNECTICUT, AND ONE-THIRD TO LOUIS M. SCHMIDT, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
POCKET-KNIFE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GLovEn S. HASTINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket- Knives, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pocket knives, and the objects of my in vention are simplicity and economy in construction and convenience and efficiency in use.
In the accompanying drawings :--Figure 1 is an edge view of a knife handle having the side plates provided with an intermediate body forming part of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the knife shown in Fig. 1 with the handle completed. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the intermediate body. Fig. i is a similar view of the finishing strip or layer. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the knife shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is an edge View of one of the side plates and the intermediate body shown in Fig. 1., on an enlarged scale. Fig. 7 is a similar view, corresponding to Fig. 2, with the finishing layer in place. Fig. 8 is a side elevation, on the same scale as Fig. 1, of a knife showing a handle without bolsters and provided with a finishing layer in accordance with my in V tween the said side plate B and scale C an intermediate body D consisting as shown of a layer or slice of material such as celluloid suitable for having the said scale secured to itself in a safe and reliable manner by a cementitious substance and which is itself secured to the surface of the said side plate B in an ordinary manner, as by rivets alone or the cooperation of rivets and a cementitious compound or by other mechanical Specification of Letters Patent.

means involving the use of rivets or the equivalent.
In the knife shown in Fig. 1 having bolsters E and using a cementitious compound between the intermediate body D and the side plate B the single rivet 20 used to secure the spring F to the said side plate B may be utilized without other rivets for securing the said intermediate body D. The said intermediate body D may consist of a very thin slice as shown in Fig. l and the finishing layer or scale proper C may be relatively thick and heavy to produce the total thickness desired, or the finishing layer may be thin and the bulk of the composite scale may be made up of an intermediate body D of appreciable thickness.
The finishing layer or scale proper C shown in Fig. 8 and Fig. 9 extends the entire length of the side plate B, the bolster being omitted, and the rivet which forms the pivot for the blade terminating fiush'with the outer surface of the intermediate body D.
By my invention the finishing layer of the handle scale covers the mechanical means for securing the scale to the side plate of the handle and the outward appearance of the knife is thereby enhanced.
I claim as my invention:
1. A pocket knife having a scale comprising a finishing layer of non-metallic material and complete and unbroken from end to end, and an intermediate body also of nonmetallic material, secured to the side of the knife by mechanical means, and secured to the said finishing layer by a cementitious compound.
2. A pocket knife having a handle provided with a handle scale, the said handle scale comprising a finishing layer of nonmetallic material and an intermediate body also of non-metallic material, the said intermediate body being secured to the side plate of the knife by the cooperation of mechanical means, and the said finishing layer being secured to the said intermediate body by means of a cementitious compound.
GLOVER S. HASTINGS.
