WELL-FIXTURE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGIL T. GRABS, a citizen of the United States, residing at King, in the county of Stokes and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Well-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water elevators and more particularly to that type using a Windlass for drawing buckets of water from an ordinary well.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a novel clutch for holding the wheel against retrograde movement caused by the water of the bucket of water being lifted and further means whereby this clutch may be reversed.
I A further object of the invention is the provision of means used in connection with valve buckets for discharging thewater of either bucket toward a common point by means of pivoted chutes which converge toward the discharge end so that the contents of both well buckets can be discharged into a common receptacle without moving the same.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a horizontal section on the line 14 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a vertical section through one of the buckets. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the clutch removed from the frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents a casing of any suitable type which is mounted above the well and 2 represents a removable top therefor. Mounted upon the top is a pulley housing 3 having cross bars 1 which carry bearings 5 in which is journaled the shaft (3 upon which the cable or chain pulley 7 is secured. This shaft is operated in the usual manner by a crank 8 keyed to its end or in any other suitable manner. Passing over the pulley is a cable or chain 9 having buckets 10 secured to its end. Each bucket is provided with a apertured bottom 11 which is closed by a valve 12 having a downwardly projecting Specification of Letters Patent.

Pivoted within the casing and having their discharge ends projecting through slots 14:, are converging spouts 15 which have pan shaped receptacles on their inner ends adapted to be brought up beneath the buckets when operated by the sliding rods 16 which are connected to lugs 17' arranged upon the bottom of the spouts. These spouts converge as before stated so as to discharge their contents into a common receptacle (not shown) upon the ground or well platform outside of the casing 1 and which is so constructed that when raised that they will engage the depending projection of the valves and open the valves so that the buck cts can discharge the contents into the panshaped receptacles, the spouts being at this time inclined so as to convey the water to their discharge ends.
In order to prevent the pulley and consequently the loaded bucket from any retrograde movement when winding up on the Windlass, there is secured to the housing 3 a bracket 17 in which is pivoted a horizontally positioned clutch member 18 having depending lugs 19 to extend upon opposite sides of the pulley and to grip the same when the clutch member is positioned at any angle to the wheel except at right angle. This clutch is provided with a projecting pin or finger 20 which is engaged in the slot 21 formed in a reversing lever pivoted to the housing. The outer end of the lever is weighted, as shown, so that when thrown to either side will hold the clutch member firmly in its operated position.
In the operation of the device, the pulley is rotated so as to lower one of the buckets in the well. \Ve will assume that this is the right hand bucket in Fig. 2. After the bucket has been filled, the clutch is thrown to the right and the pulley turned to the left until the bucket is raised to its full height. The rod 16 is then depressed so as to raise the receptacle portion of the chute into engagement with the projection 13 of the bucket valve. This action raises the valve and permits the water in the bucket to be discharged out of the chute into the common receptacle spoken of. In the meantime, the bucket at the left hand of Fig. 2 has been lowered into the well and has been properly filled and, by rotating the pulley in'the right hand direction With the clutch lever thrown to the left the left hand bucket, may be properly Wound up and discharged as before described.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new, is
1. In a Water elevator, the combination With a housing and a cable pulley journaled therein, of a horizontal pivoted member, means thereon to engage the opposite sides of the pulley, and a pivoted shifting lever for operating said member, said lever having a Weighted end.
2. In a Water elevator, the combination with a housing and a cable pulley journaled therein, of a bracket carried by the housing,
a bar pivoted on the bracket for movement in a horizontal plane, a pair of lugs on said bar adapted to engage opposite sides of the pulley simultaneously When the bar is shifted to either position, and a slotted shifting lever for operating the bar, said lever having a Weighted end and being pivoted on the housing to move in a vertical plane.
3. In a Water elevator, the combination with a housing, and a pulley journaled in said housing, of a bracket projecting horizontally from the housing, a horizontally swinging member pivoted in said bracket, means carried by said pivoted member for engaging on opposite sides of the pulley and adapted to bind upon the same, and a Weighted lever for shifting the position of said pivoted member.
4:. In a Water elevator, the combination With a Well top, a housing secured thereto, and a cable pulley journaled in the housing, of a bracket secured to the housing, a horizontally moving member pivoted in the bracket, depending legs on said pivoted member adapted to engage upon opposite sides of the pulley, a projecting finger on the pivoted member, and a Weighted lever pivoted to the housing and having a slot to receive the projecting finger, said lever adapted to shift the position of said pivot-ed member so that it Will grip the pulley against movement in either direction.
