CHURN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, '1.912.
Application led October 16, 1911. Serial No. 654.915.
To all whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-IN H. Burton, a`
` designed to provide a mechanism whereby the churn may be actuated for the usual purposes, and at the same time construe-t said mechanism in such a manner that it is applicable to ehurns of all sizes and shapes. l l-leretofore in the driving mechanism for 4 ehurus it has been customary to manufacture and permanently attach the same to the barrel or receptacle of the churn. This has been found to be very objectionable by reason of the fact that the driving mechalnism often breaks and necessitates the buying of an entirely lnew machine.
lt- -is the object of the present invention to provide a driving mechanism, the elements of which may readily be replaced and at the Sametime be -applicable to any suitable receptacle, whether the same be constructed t-o conform with the driving mechanism, or not..
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more particularly described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure -l is a central, vertical section of a churn constructed in accordance with the present invention;'Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a section taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a section taken along line 4 4 of Fig. 2.
The churn forming the subject matter of through .said clamps and engaging said members or supports. 'lhese clamps are adjustable and will engage the bottom of any suitable receptacle, whether the saine be round or square, or even elliptical, and retain the sanie rigidlywhile the churn plunger or dasher is operating therein. A bearing or bracket is mounted upon the upper surface of the platform, and is provided with a gear mechanism actuated by a handle which operates a pitinan, this pitman operating a reciprocatory rod to which is adjustahly attached a dasher, said dasher operating below the under surface of the platform, and` is adapted to be projected into a receptacle or tub 'for the purpose of creating action therein to produce butter.
Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, l() indicates a platform having a plurality of legs 11 securedl thereto, said legs constituting a plurality of rods 11, adapted to be received in the tubular bars 111b andA are retained in various.. postions therein through the instrumentality of the set screws 11"'. A bar 12 is interposed between each pair of tubular sections 11", said bars being notched for the purpose of crossing the saine as at 13, in order that the upper edges thereof may rest in a horizontal plane. A clamp 1-l is slidable ou. each half of each bar 12, said clamp being' retained in various positions upon said bai' by the set screw 15. These clamps are so adjustable that the same will engage and rigidly. secure any suitable receptacle or tub 1G upon the supports 12, as illustrated in the drawings. A bracket 17 is mounted upon a platform 10 and is provided with a transverse extension 18 atthe upper termina-l thereof, in which voperates a tubular rod 19 connected Vto a pitman 20, which likewise operates in a slot 22 Iof the extension 18 throughthe instruinentality of a joint 21. A crank shaft 23 is mounted in the bracket 1T and operates a gear 24. bracket 1T directly below the crank shaft 28, and is driven from the said crank shaft 23 by the gear 26 mounted on the shaft 25 and meshing with the gear 2J. of the crank shaft 23. A pair of balance wheels 27 are mounted on the shafty 25, one of said wheels being mounted within the bracket, and the oppc,
site balance wheel being 'mounted wit out the bracket. The 'balance wheel 27 located upon the exterior of the bracket is suit..blv
A shaft 25 isv mounted in the.-
connected to the pitman 20. Thus, it Will be seen that upon operating the crank shaft, the tubular reciprocatory rod will be operated, thereby imparting a similar motion to the dasher 28 extending through the platform l0 and adjustably secured in the tubular rod 1.9byA the set screw 29. This dasher carries any suitable blade 30 at the lower terminal thereof for the purpose of operating upon the cream.
I li'aving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by S. Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, a platform provided with outwardly inclined telescopic legs, a churn body mounted 'beneath the platform, a bracket mounted on the platform, a train lof gearwheels supported by the bracket, a pair of balance wheels in train with the Wheels, a pitrnan veccentrically pivoted on one of the balance wheels, an extensible churn dasher shaft pivoted to the pitman, and a crank mounted on one of the train of wheels for driving the same and reciprocating the dasher within the churn body;` i
2. ln a device, of the character described, the combination of a platform provided with outwardly inclined telescopic legs, horizontal' bars crossing each other angularly -secured to the several pairs of oppositely dis-l posed legs, a churn body mounted on the bars, clamps on the several bars adapted to l secure the churn body centrally and vertically beneath the platform, and means for mounted on the platform, a gear mechanism mounted on the bracket, a pair of balance wheels connected to the gear wheels, a laterally extending arm at the other terminal of the bracket, a pitman pivot-ally secured eccentrically of one of the balance Wheels, a tubular rod pivotally havingl a rod secured thereto, said dasher rod being ustably mounted in the tubular rod aforesaid, and means to actuate the'gear mechanism and to reciprocate the churn flasher.
In testimony whereof I affix my signa-ture in presence of two witnesses.
