CHUTE.

To all/whom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, JAMES M. Tatoos, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Huntington, ton and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Chute; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of referenee marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. y f

My invention relates to chutes of the 4class adapted to remain permanently secured in the wall,of,a building, and has particular reference to improvements on the chute disclosed in my former United States Letters Patent, No. 833,352, dated Oct. 1G, 1906. Soffar as I am aware the chutes of this class heretofore used are restricted to use in basement windows or in wall openings provided below` the ground floor, thus prohibiting their use in connection with buildings the floors bf which are vsubstantially on a level with the associated walks, as in the case of a store. 4In such cases it has been customary to provide an opening in the sidewalkl through lwhich coal, wood, etc., can be thrown into/the basement. By the ordinances of some cities, however, this is prohibited unless the property owner give 'bond usually for a considerable amount.

The object of my invention is to overcome the objections above enumerated, by

vthe provision of a chute of the character described, which is adapted to be placed in the wall of a building with its 'inlet opening above the sidewalk or ground level and, constructed to direct its discharge downward v therefrom through the subjacent portion of the wall and then inward under the vfloor joists to the interior of the basement, and

which is also simple, strong and durable in its construction, and easy of installation.

The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying rawings, in which,-- l

a side elevation thereof mounted in the wall of a building with a portion broken away. Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a building wall, 2 the lower floor thereof, and 3 a sidewalk, pavement or ground-line, the surface plane with the floor, as is customary in store buildings.

The body of the chute comprising my invention is designated 4t and is disposed vertically within the wall 1 with its upper end extending above the walk line 3 and its lower end extending below the floor line or joists, as may be desired. The portion of the chute extending above the walk line is provided in its front with an opening 5 of suitable size for the throwing of coal or other articles therethrough. A frame 6, in the present instance of rectangular form, is provided around, this opening with its sides and top forming flanges for projecting laterally :from the adjacent front sides and top edges ofthe chute, while'the -bottom thereof is shown in the present instance as 'projecting forward-to vforni a ledge 7 at the base of the opening. In the present instance., thersides and top' portions of the' frame 6 arc provided atI their inner edges with rearwardly projecting flanges 'S to which the top and a portion of the sides of the chute bodymay beriveted or otherwise suitably secured, while the front edges of the sides are provided with forwardly projecting longitudinally tapering Hanges 9, which cooperate with a raised portion of the bottom ledge 7 to form a .seat for the marginal edge of the door or closure member l0 to seat against when closed. The door 10 is preferably hinged at its tp edge to the lframe G to enable `itto be raised Outof the way when opened.

The chute body is preferably provided at its opposite sides adjacent to the base of the frame (S with outwardly projecting hori- '/.ontal ledges 11, which are ada ted to rest upon associated portions of tiie wall to firmly support the chute in position therein.
