JAMES B. PLATT, or Burmoma, MARYLAND.
CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
application led J'uly 1,1911. Serial No. 636,449.
To all who/m, z't may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMESl B. PLATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improve- -vments in Cans, of which the followlng is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cans or receptacles for fruits,'o'ysters, liquids, and other suitable materials; and its object is to improve upon the means for closing the can.
Another object is to enable the can or other receptacle to be closed by means of a frictional spring-top closure which affords a tight seal without the use of solder.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear; and to these ends the invention consists of a device forA carrying out the above objects embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements, and general mode of operation substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 1s a 'vlew 1n slde elevation of a 'can constructed in accordance with this in- A 4, for the purpose of rendering the mouth of the can rigid.
The sheet metal cover B is provided with a depending flange 5, the lower edge of the ange being curled or rolled outwardly formin an annular bead 6, this bead being also reinforced with a wire ring 7 similar.
to that of the bead 3; provided 1n the wall of the lang'e 4, and predeterminedly located above the bead 6, is provided 4an angular V shaped groove S, ada ted to engage with the angular bead 1 on t e can, when the cover B is placed on the can and downward pressure applied upon it; the downward pressure on the cover will cause the groove 8 to spring over-the bead 1, and become locked over the same, and thereby secure the cover tightly on the can.
The cover being made from resilient material, preferably, sheet metal, but little pressure is required upon the cover to force the groove 8 over the bead f 1, and when forced over the bead, the groove will spring back into locking contact with the bead withv which it will engage, and the spring pressure in addition to the friction between 'the parts serve to secure the cover tightly on .the'can. According to the construction described it will be seen that the cover may be readily removed by leverage, by the use of a tool the cover may be sprung oil the can, it being only necessary to apply leverage to a suitable tool or instrument inserted under the bead 6 of the cover, between the iiange 5 and the can, in which case the cover is easily pried olf.` The object of the annular bead 2 is twofold, one object being to stiifen the can at this point, the other, and most important object however, being to limit the insertion of the cover on the can.
Obviously some features of this invent-ion may be used without others and the invention may be embodied in widely varying forms. Therefore being aware that slight changes and alterations might be resorte to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact conf struction as herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention,
Patented Aug. 13, 1912.
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: y
1. The combination in a can of the character described havin an angular V shaped bead laterally forme in its upper end portion, of a cover having a depending flange with an angular V shaped groove provided therein to receive the bead on the can when the cover is placed thereon and thereby seal t-he same, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a' can of the character described the upper ed e of which is rolled or curled inwardly to form ahead, a. metal ring provided in the bead, an annular bead laterally provided below the mouth of the can, of ar :n lar V shaped bead laterally formed an interposed between the annular bead and the mouth of the can, a cover therefor formed with a depending flange having an annular bead formed en the edge thereof, and an angular V shaped yb ead laterally formed in its upper en d tion, of a cover having a straight depen ing v won the can,` and thereby seal the rsame, substantially as described. L y c 3.l The combination in a can of the char'- acter" described, having an angular V shaped ange with an angular V shaped groove provided therein to receive the bead on the 10 can When the cover.` is placed thereon, subsgantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in` presence -of two Witnesses.
v JAMES B. PLATT.
