I have chosen to Illustrate my invention in connection with a machlne of the class of which the machine of the patent to Cummings et al., No. 493,910, dated March 21, 1893, is an example. I will now proceed to describe the mechanism by which the staple blanks are bent to form the staples and the staples are driven into the work, this mechanism being substantially thesame as the mechanism for such purposes employed in connection with the patent to which I have just referred.
36 is a staple former and carrier which is carried by a floating lever 37 which is carried forwardly and rearwardly at the proper times in the operation of the machine by a link 38 connecting said lever to a cam lever 39 having journaled thereon a cam roll 40 located in a cam groove 41 formed in a cam 42 secured to a driving shaft 43 which is journaled in suitable bearings in the frame 44. A wire clamp 45 pivoted at 46 to the staple carrier and former 36 is provided at its front end with a notch 47 adapted to receive the wire, the front end of said clamp being pressed downwardly toward said carrier by means of a suitable spring 48. The staplecarrierjand former 36 is provided in itp uppepsideivith a bevel face 49' and the clamp 45' is provided -near its lower side wvith a bevel face 50, which bevel faces converge toward each other toward the righthand side of the machine.- When the wire is fed through the wire guide 18 and across the top of -.he stationary cutter 15, said wire passes be ween the upper side of the staple carrier and former 36 and the lower side of the clamp 45, the bevel faces 49 and 50 insuring the proper passage of the advancing end of'the wire be, tween the carrier 36 and clamp 45.
