Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug, 13, 1912, Application filed Vovember 11, 1911. Serial No. 659,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR K. Bacawrrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Dowagiac, county of Cass, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Joints for Stoves or Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in joints for stovesor furnaces-.-
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved joint in which the parts to'be joined can be readily formed as castings and one in which the joint 1s so formed thatthe packing or cement is easlly inserted inassembling the parts and when the partsare assembled, is positively retained.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention.
by the devices and means described in the following specification.
I l flange 3 rests against the side The invent-ion is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which: I
Figure I is a detail perspective view of a cook stove structure embodying the features ofmy invention. Fig. II is. a detail vertical section taken on a line corresponding to line 22 of Fig. I.. Fig. III is a detail elevation looking I from the-deftof-Fig1 'II.
In the drawing similar reference nuv l'n'erals refer to sim'1 or parts in all the views. Referring to the drawing, 1 represents themi) plate of a cook stove or range, and 2, a side plate *or wall thereof." The wall or plate 2 is arranged with its edge abutting the under side of the plate 1 within the flange 3. The flange 3 is inclined inwardly, its inner-face or wall 4 be" at an angle to the side of the wall"2. Tie edge of the of the plate 2, there being a wedge-shaped space between the flange and the plate 2 for the reception of the cement 5. The flange forms a beadlike'finish for the'plate 1 and is provided with downwardly projecting ears 6 for the sible for cement and causes it to attaching bolts 7. The cement space of the joint bei e cement to fall out in use and at the same time, the parts can be readily cast and are easily assembled. In assembling the parts, the cement is laced in the flange, the plate 2 positione and drawn into place by the bolts; This compacts the fill the joint space throughout, making an effective tight joint.
I ave illustrated my improvements adapted to the 'joint between the top-plate and side wall of a cooking stove but it will be obvious that it can be readily adapted for other relations such as for the joints of furnaces.
Havin thus described my invention,
what I c aim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
gcvedgeshaped, it is quite impost 1. In; a joint for stovesor furnaces the combination with a top late formed with a downwardly and inward y projecting flange. a side plate arranged on the inner' side of said flange with its outer side against the edge of the flange and its upper edge abutting the underside of the top plate, there being a wedge:sha ed space between the said flange and the si' e plate for the reception of cement, said-flange being provided with attaching ears, and a clamplng bolt arranged through said ears to clamp the side plate against the edge ofthe flange.
2. In a joint for stoves or furnaces, the combination of a plate formed with an inclined joint flange thereon, a second plate arranged on the inner side of the with 1l.'S outer side against the edge of the flange and with its upper edge abutting the flange plate on the inner side of its said flange, there being a'wedgc-shaped space between the flange and said second plate, a packing'materlal arranged'in said space. and means for cla'r'npinn said second plate against the edge of In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two witnesses.
