WATER-GAGE COCK.
Specification of 'Lettersyateiiti Patented Aug.6, 1912.
LAppIicatirn filed June 2 7, 191i. Serial No. 635,658.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon M. WOLFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montpelier, in the county of Bear Creekand State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Gage Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to water gage cocks and has for its object to provide a cock with the use of which the possibility of cansing the boiler to which it is attached to explode by reason of the crew being unable to determine -the water level therein is precluded.
With this object in view the cock includes a body adapted to be attached to the boiler and having a valve seat therein. A valve is arranged to close against the said seat and a sleeve is screw threaded in the bonnet of the valve body and when moved longitudinally is adapted to positively move the valve whereby it may be moved toward or away from the seat. At the same time the stem of the valve passes through the said sleeve and .is provided with a non-circular exposed head which may be turned independently of the sleeve, whereby the valve may be ground into position against. the seat while the boiler is subjected to pressure.
In the accompanying drawings ;Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2, is a central,
vertical-longitudinal section thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.
The water. gage cock includes a body 1 having a nipple 2 pr vided with an external thread 3 whereby the said nipple may be screwed into the side or end of a boiler. The body 1 is provided in its interior and at the end of the nipple 2 with a valve seat 4. The body 1 is also provided with a nip le 5 which is in longitudinal alinement wit the nipple 2 and located at the side of the said body opposite that side at which the nipple 2 is located. The body 1 is also provided with a drip nozzle 6. A boiinet 7 is screwed upon the outer end of the nipple 5. A sleeve 8 is provided upon its periphery with a thread which passes through the center of and has threaded engagement with the honnet 7. A hand wheel 9 is fixed to the outer end of the sleeve 8. Therefore it will be seen that by turning the hand wheel 9 the threaded engagement between the sleeve 8 and the j bonnet 7 will cause the said sleeve to move longitudinally through the bonnet.
A valve stem 10 is loosely journaled in the sleeve 8 and is provided at an intermediate point with a valve 11 which is located below the lower end -of the sleeve 8 and is adapted to close against the seat 4 provided in the body 1. Below the said valve 11 the stem 10 is continued into an extremity 12 which traverses the length of the nipple 2 and is pointed at its tip as at 13 which tip is adapted to project beyond the end of the nipple 2. The extremity 12 and the pointed tip 13 are designed to .L'eep the nipple 2 free of sediment or other obstructing material. The outer end portion of the stem 10 projects beyond the outer end of the sleeve 8 and is provided with a fixed non-circular head 1.4 against the under side of which the outer surface of the hand wheel 9 bears.
By this arrangement it will be seen that when the'sleeve 8 is moved longitudinally by the use of the hand wheel 9, as hereinbefore described, the stem 10 and valve 11 will be caused to move with the said sleeve so that the valve may be positively moved toward or away from the seat 4. When the sleeve 8 moves in a direction toward.the valve 11 it engages the valve and forces the same firmly against the seat 4. When the sleeve 8 is moved in a direction toward the head 14 the wheel 9 engages the said head and through the stem 10 positively moves the valve 11 away from the seat 4 so that it is impossible for the said valve to become stuck in its position upon the seat.
When it is desired to grind the valve 11 against the, seat 4 this may be done while the valve and the boiler to which it is attached are subjected to pressure. To effect this the sleeve 8 is turned so that the valve 11 is forced down against the seat 4 then a wrench or other implement is applied to the non-circular head 14 and is swung to and fro or rotated. Inasmuch as the head 14 is fixed to the stem 10 as is also the valve 11 the said valve will be ground in its position upon the seat and thus the said parts may be made to snugly fit with relation to each other.
It will be observed by reference to Fig.-
2 that the bore of the body 1 from the valve seat to the receiving end of the body is smooth and free from projections; also, that the extremity 12 of the valve stem 1s smooth smooth bore; a handle fixed on the outer and reefrom pro ections and 1s considerportion of said sleeve; a valve opposed to ably smaller 1n diameter than he said bore the valve seat and the inner end of the This flI FOIClS a clearance between the bole sleeve and havln a stem extending through of the body and the stem extremity l2 and l and beyond the sleeve and adapted to be turned about its axis in said sleeve and also having a smooth stem extremity, of considerably smaller diameter than GEORGE M. WOLFE. Witnesses:
