DOOR-LATCH.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY BnANDLnY, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Matfield Green, in the county of Chase and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to latches of the type especially adapted for use in connection with barn doors, gatcs, or similar structures.

A latch embodying;` the invention is composed primarilyof a suitable spindle mounted on the door jainb and provided with operating` arms upon opposite ends, one arin being arranged on the inside of the door and the o-ther on the outside of said door when the latter is closed. The Operating arms above referred to constitute handles for manipulating the spindle to latch and unlatch the door, and one of said arms performs a looking' function by Cooperation with a peculiarly arranged hasp, the last mentioned parts being adapted to be lockcd together with a pad-lock, or the like when it is desired to lock the door against unauthorized access to the structure upon which it is arranged.

For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a structure including a door, and illustratin` the invention as applied thereto, the parts being` partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken about on the line 3- 8 of Fg. 2 and looking' downwardly.

Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.

In all of the views of the drawings, the latch is shown in a position in which it holds the door closed and locked by means of a pad-lock, dotted lines in'Fig. 3 showing the movement of the looking arm in order to permit free opening movement of the door.

Specifically describing the invention in connection with the drawings, 1 denotes a structure such as a barn or equivalent means, the door 2 being hingedly mounted thereon, as shown at 3 and adapted to swing into closed and open positions, in the former of Specifieation of Letters Patent.

A supporting' plate ll: is fastened by screws or other fastenings to the Jainb 1 and is provided with a bearlng 4:' to receive the spindle 5 of the lateh means. The spindle 5 is horiztmtally arranged in the bearingI L1' and is provided at its inner end with a downwardly extending; arin constituting a handle G, which handle also performs the function of a stop, as will be pointed out lnore fully hereinafter. A locking' arni 7 is carried by the outcr end of the spindle 5 and tern'iinatcs at its free extrelnity in a` latcral stop 8 and an extension 9 forined with an opening theretln'ongh. i'\ttached to the outer side of the door 2 is a plate 10 forined with an arc-shaped guide 11 coniprised by a flang'e of the plate 10. A hasp 12 is pivoted at one end to the lower extreinity of the plate 10 and is formed with an opening| adapted to iegister with thel opening' in the extension 9 of the looking arin 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.

In the practical use of the invention, to hold the door 2 closed, the parts will be arranged, as shown in full lines in the several tigures of the drawings, the inner handle or arm 6 being pendent and resting close against the amb 1' out of the way, while the looking arrn 7 is arranged transversely of the door, with the stop 8 resting on the pivotally connected portion of the plate 10 and hasp 12. The arm 7, of course, prevents opening movement of the door according to the above arrangement and 'if it is desired to permancntly lock the door, a pad-lock, such as shown at 13, is engaged with the parts 9 and 12, the latter being raised to a horizontal position for this purpose. To unlatch the door, the operator has only to grasp the extension 9 and move the same to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 8. The spindle 5 makes a half revolution in the above operation and the arm 7 is held in the dotted line position aforesaid by the engagement of the handle 6 with the jamb, said handle under these conditions projecting upwardly or vertically from the spindle. When a lock, such as a pad-lock is not eniployed, the latch means described will perform the function of a latch solely and the locking arm 7 is susceptible of operation from the outside of the door as well as from the interior of the structure upon which the door is mounted. The hasp 12 when not in understood that while the parts 6 and 7 are illuscrated as integral with the spindle 5 in the drawings, they may be detachably secured thereto in any positive and effective manner desirable.

Having thus describe'd the invention, what is claimed as new is:

1. In combination with a door and structure upon which said door is mounted, the latter including a suitable jamb for the door, latch means consisting of 'a spindle mounted onthe jamb, a looking arm at one end of said spindle adapted to engage with the door to hold the latter closed, .an arm at the other end portion of the spindle providing a handle for manipulation of 'the spindle from the inside of the door, a hasp mounted on the door, and means to connect said hasp and locking arm for preventing unauthorized manipulation of the hasp.

2. In combination with a door and structure upon which said door is mounted, the latter including a suitable jamb for the door, latch means consisting of a spindle mounted on the jamb, a locking arm at one end of said spindle adapted 'to engage with the door to hold the latter closed, a Vhasp pivotally mounted on the door, and means to connect said hasp and looking arm.

In combination with a door and Vstructure upon which said door is mounted, thelatter including a suitable jamb for the door, latch means consisting of a spindle mounted on the jamb, a locking arm at one end of said spindle adapted to engage with the door to hold the latter closed, a stop projecting from the locking arm, and a plate secured to the door and having a guide to coact with said stop.

In combination with a door and structure upon which said door is mounted, the latter including a suitable jamb for the door, latch means consisting of a spindle mounted on the jamb, a locking arm at v'one end of said spindle adapted to engage with the door to hold the latter closed, a stop projecting from the locking arm, a plate secured to the door and having 'a guide to coact with said stop, a hasp pivoted to said plate, and means to operatively connect the hasp with the locking arm.

5. In combination with a door and structure upon which said door is mounted, the latter including a suitable jamb for the door, latch means consisting of a spindle mounted on the jamb, a locking arm at one end of said spindle adapted to engage with the door to hold the latter closed, a stop projecting from the locking arm, a plate secured to the door and having a guide vto coact with said stop, a hasp pivotally connected to said plate and movable to occupy positions close against the door or eXtending outwardly from the door beneath the locking arm, said locking arm and hasp having registering openings, and a device engaging said openings to connect the hasp and locking arm against unauthorized operation.
