Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I GARRETT M. VROOME, a citizen of the Unitec States, and a resident of the city of New York, West New Brighton, borough of Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Line-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a new and improved form of line holder for use in shingling roofs and at other localities where it is desired to mark off a series of parallel lines.
An object of my device is to provide a means whereby a series of lines may be marked off across a surface by operating on one side only of the surface.
A further object of my invention is to operate the device from a distance, whereby the marking line may be changed from one location to another without the necessity of making trips across the marked surface in order to regulate or actuate the marking device.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device whereby one end of the line may be held in position across the roof or other object which it is desired to mark, and then be released, which action will cause it to automatically swing to another position, and again to a third position, without the necessity of approaching the device in order to change the location of one end of the line.
With the above and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, lllustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a roof showing a preferred embodiment of my invention attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the line-carrying device in its first position, and in prolonged dotted lines showing the carrying arm in its second position and in fine dotted lines showing the carrying arm in its third or final position; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction of the arrow; and Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view showing the locking block.
As shown in the figures, my device comprises a frame 1, preferably of metal having an overhanging hood or casing 2, within which is disposed the mechanism of my device, and having a rear wall 3 from opposite sides of which project horizontally-disposed brackets or lugs 4 and 5. The bracket 5, which will hereinafter be referred to as the rear bracket has positioned thereon beneath the hood 2, a two-part clamp 6, between the parts of which is positioned a slidable gage rod 7 having graduations 8 thereon, the outer end of which rod is bent downwardly to form a projecting point 9, which point is adapted to engage with the end shingle 10, as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the marking device may be definitely and rigidly affixed in position. The forward lug 4 has mounted thereon a block 11, from which projects an integral stud 12 constituting a bearing for a line-carrying arm 13,said stud, above said arm, being square in horizontal cross-section, upon which square part fits a lock block 14, the arm 13 and block 14 being held in position on the stud 12 by means of a binding screw 15. The line-carrying arm 13 is preferably made of two parts welded together, a part 13 which projects a slight distance from the stud 12 and a graduated arm 16, referably of square crosssection upon which slides a square sleeve 17 held in position by means of a set-screw 18. On the under side of the sleeve 17 is an eye 19, through which passes a chalking line 20 extending from the side of the roof or other surface opposite the side to which the device is attached, through the eye 19 to a knob 21 extending upwardly from one end of a lever 22 pivoted to the part 13 between the stud 13 and the upwardly-projecting shoulder 23 formed by the members 13 and 16. The end of the lever 22, o posite the end to which the line 20 is attac ed, is bent toward the stud 12 and is formed into a sharp pointed nose 24, which nose is adapt ed to engage in one or the other of V-shaped recesses 25 positioned about the out-er edge of the block 14 at an angle of ninety degrees to each other.
Projecting from the lever 22 adjacent the fulcrum point 26 is a pin 27 carrying a pivoted arm 28, said arm having a longitudinal slot 29 therein, through which slot is bent one end of a coil tension spring 30, which spring extends lengthwise of the device beneath the hood 2, having its opposite end permanently fastened to a stud 31 extending upwardly from the clamp 6. As this spring is fastened at one end to the stud 31 and the other end is attached to the lever 22 offset from its fulcrumed point, it will be seen that the tendency of this spring is to Withdraw the head 24 of the lever out of engagement with the block 14, while any pull on the line 20 will act against the pull of this spring to hold the head of the lever 24 in engagement with one of the recesses in the block 14', thereby holding the arm 16 in the full-line position shown in Fig. 2, or in the right-angle position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, or in the completely-folded position, also shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, beneath the spring.
In operation, thedevice is set in position, as shown in Fig. 1, the pointed end 9 en with the surface and the entire device positioned by sliding the same along the rod 7 after which the device is held in position by means of a binding screw 32, and the arm 16 is swung into position, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. Then the sleeve 17 is moved along the arm 16 from the pivot a distance equal to the distance desired between successive parallellines, and the sleeve is tightened in this position by means of the screw 18. It will then be seen that from the opposite side of the surface the operator by pulling on the line 20, causes the lever 22 to engage' with the fixed head 14, thereby holding the arm in extended position against the action of the spring. Releasing the tension on the line 20, the spring is free to act, thereby drawing the arm 16 around into a position at right angles to its initial position, as shown in dotted lines in 2; then tension upon the line20 will pull the lever 22 intoengagenient with the second notch and in this, position another line may be struck; again releasing the lever 22, the springj30' will draw the arm' 16 into it final posit-ion arallel with the frame 1, when a third line may be struck, I L
, It will be seen that by this construction, the operator may place the device upon the edge of a surface and without. again appreaching the same, it is possible to strike three parallel lines in succession, after which the device may be set for three more lines, and so on along the entire surface to be marked.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a line holder, an arm pivoted to said holder, a lever pivoted to said arm, a block mounted on said holder, said block having apertures adapted to be engaged by one arm of said lever, and a line attached to the other arm of said lever whereby the engagement of said lever with said block is controlled.
2. In a line holder, an arm, a sleeve movably affixed on said arm, and a line extending from said sleeve, whereby the positioning of said line with reference to said holder is regulated.
3. In a line holder, an arm pivoted to said holder and adapted to extend in a direction in prolongation of said holder, and means whereby said arm may be held in a position at an angle to said holder, and in a position parallelwith said holder, whereby the same arm will hold a chalk line in any one of three positions.
4. In a line holder, a stud projecting from said holder, an arm pivoted to said stud, a
recessed lock block positioned on said stud above said arm, a lever on said arm adapted to engage with a recess in said block, and a line attached to said lever and to said arm, whereby said line may be held in one of several difierent positions.
5. A line holder, comprising a back portion and an overhanging ledge, a spring held beneath said overhanging ledge, said spring having one end attached to said holder, means pivoted from the opposite end of said holder, a marking line attached to said means, and mechanisms actuated by said line, whereby said means may be swung under the action of said spring beneath said overhanging ledge to protect the same.
6. A line holder adapted to be positioned at theedge of a surface to be lined, comprising a holder having a base adapted to rest on said, surface, a pivoting stud extending normally to said base, an arm pivoted to said stud, to swing in a plane parallel to said base and surface, a marking line carried by said arm, and means holding said arm in a plurality of positions, whereby the arm in any position will be substantially in the plane of the surfaee to maintain the end of the line attached to-the arm adjacent said surface. v
7.
