Description

H. S. PALM. DUMPING WAGON. APPLICATION IILED DEG. 2a, 1910.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.

vwentoz Witnmoeo Q7MM w HENRY S. PALM, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUMPING-WAGO'N.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An 6,1912.
Application filed December 28, 1910. Serial No. 599,706.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. PALM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-WVagons, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in certain improvements in elevating gears for chute-delivery wagons, which are fully described in con nection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features of which are specilically pointed out in the claims.
The drawing is a diagrammatic side elevation of essential parts of a chute wagon having my invention applied thereto; the body and its elevating gear being shown as raised for discharging the contents, but another position thereof, assumed at an earlier stage of the elevating movement, being indicated in dot-and-dash lines. A third position of the rear end of the main elevating arms, namely its normal position when the body is fully lowered, is also indicated.
The movable wagon body 2, is carried upon a running gear having a sill or frame 3 provided with a suitably mounted trans verse winding-shaft 4; the latter carrying a pair of chains 5 connected on opposite sides of the wagon to the body-elevating gear as hereinafter described.
As shown, a main elevating lever 10 on each side of the wagon, is slidably connected at its forward end to the front end of the body, and is jointed at an intermediate point 11 to a forwardly extending frame member 12 which is pivoted at 13 and serves as a swinging fulcrum for the lever 10 when the latter is operated by the winding shaft. The rearbody lift comprises a bell-crank lover pivoted at 14 to the rear portion of the frame, and having one arm 15 jointed to a rearwardly extending body member 17 while the other arm 16 depends substantially vertically when the body is in normal lowered position. This preferred toggle-lever arrangement in connection with which my invention is illustrated, corresponds with that shown in Patent No. 539,094, issued May 14, 1895.
In my improved construction, as shown, the lever 10 has a practically straight rearward extension beyond the fulcrum joint 11, terminating in a hooked end 20 which lies substantially in the plane of the supporting frame 3, and rearward of the bell-crank fulcrum 14, when the wagon body is in lowered position (see dotted position 20*). This end 20 of the lever 10 is connected to an elcvating chain 5 which is attached to the winding shaft 4; and said chain, instead of extending directly to said shaft, is carried downward from the lever end 20, and around the lower end of the depending bell-crank arm 16 which serves as a fixed chain guide until the lever end 20 is lowered to the position indicated in dot-and-dash lines. This movement of the lever 10 alone, will raise the front of the wagon body without elevating the rear thereof, thus giving a desired rearward incline to the body. The hooked-end 20 of the lever 10, having been thus moved by the connected chain into contact with the depending bell-crank arm 16, is adapted to engage the latter so as to swing it with the lever 10 during further winding-up of the chain, the hooked-end 20 catching upon the roller 22 as shown. The continued operation of the winding shaft will then elevate the whole body of the wagon to the position indicated in full lines, both the front and rear toggles being simultaneously spread by the lever 10 and bellcrank 14.
What I claim is 1. The combination with the running gear frame, winding shaft, and relatively movable body; of a front-elevating toggle-joint mechanism the body-connected member of which has a rearward extension arranged to lie normally substantially parallel with said frame; a winding-shaft chain connected to the end portion of said extension; and a rear-elevating bell-crank having a depending arm the end portion of which is arranged to deflect said chain during the preliminary elevating movement and to be thereafter directly engaged by said extension.
2. The combination with the running gear frame, winding shaft, and relatively movable body; of an elevating lever connected at its forward end to the forward portion of said body and arranged to lie normally substantially parallel with said frame, a rear-elevating bell-crank haying a depending arm, and an elevating chain attached to the rear portion of said lever and normally deflected upon the end of said depending arm in extending to said shaft.
3. The combination with the running gear frame, Winding shaft, and relatively I11OV- shaft chain attached to the latter and arable body; of an elevating lever connected ranged to ride upon said roller. 10 at its forward end to the forward portion of In testimony whereef, I affix my signasaid body and having a rearwardly-extended ture, in the presence of two itnesses.
