T0 all who/m. if may concern Be it known that I, OLE B. MADISON, citizen of the United States, residing at St. Johns, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney Caps and Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.A
My invention pertains to chimney caps and ventilators, and is designed to prevent rain or down currents of air from entering the chimney.
A further object is to gather the currents of air about the chimney and so control them that the air striking the chimney top will always move in an upward direction and thereby produce a normal draft.
These and other objects are accomplished by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which* Figure 1 is a plan view of the device showing the cap and u-pper truncated cone partly broken away, also the horizontal wing 14, with its radial vanes; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the elements of structure of the several parts, the wing 14, with its guide-vanes being shown at one side only.
Referring to the drawing in detail, l designates a collar adapted to be fitted upon the top of the chimney 2. To the upper edge of the collar is secured upon brackets 11, a truncated cone 13, which stands, with reference to the collar, at an angle of approximately 45 degrees, and it has a horizontal width approaching that of the collar. Above cone 13, at a distance approximately equal to the width of the collar is placed a second truncated cone 4, similar in all respects to cone 18, and secured in place thereon by vanes, or partitions 3, fixed between said cones, s0 that their ends stand substantially in line with their respective edges of the cones. v
To the upper edge 9 of the cone 4 are fixed brackets S, upon which is supported the cap 6, which has a cone-shaped upper surface, and is provided in its lower portion with a base 7, which forms a deflector to direct the upward currents of air outward, from the chimney. The base is secured to the edge 5 of the cap.
To the lower edge o f cone 4 is secured the horizontal wing 14, whose inner edge 15 conforms to that of the cone. The wing is placed in line with the upper edge 10 of the lower cone, as indicated by the arrow h, and
is made slightly wider than the vertical distance between said cones; and it is sustained in place by radial vanes 17. A support 12 also, may be added to strengthen the parts. The vanes o1' bracket 17, in addition to supporting the wing 14, serve to prevent the horizontal currents of air which strike upon the cone 4 from being deflected laterally, and directs such currents across the edge 9 and over the top of the chimney.
The purpose of wing 14 is to prevent the down currents of air from sweeping the outer edges of the cones 13 and 4, and there- 'by produce a suction downwardly in the space between them, and consequently, a down draft in the chimney. If the line of movement is directly downward past the wing it will not strike the lower cone and, hence, will not produce a suction. And if the direction of the current is varied until it reaches that of the arrow f it still will not produce a down draft, because it does not strike the lower edge of the air chamber. But when the Vcurrent approaches the horizontal sufliciently to strike the lower cone, as indicated by arrow g, it must strike it at an acute angle, and will therefore, be deflected upwardly through the ventilator. Any current, accordingly, which will strike the lower cone, will tend to the production of an upward draft in the chimney.
The normal horizontal current of air striking the vanes or partitions 3, as shown by arrow a, will be gathered toward their inner ends and directed upwardly over the chimney, the body of the current passing in a direct line, without lateral deflection, as shown at Z).
The cap or upper cone is made of such width that any downward current passing the edge 5` thereof, which will pass above the edge 9 of cone 4, will pass out between the partitions 3, above the edge 10 of cone 13, so that it is impossible for rain or air currents entering above cone 4 to strike within the chimney. Direct horizontal currents will pass unobstructed beneath the cap, as shown at (l. The lower edge of cone 4 being in line with the upper edge of cone 13, renders it impossible for currents pass' ing between said cones to enter the chimney.
If the cap consisted simply of the cone 6, the upward currents directed against it would gather therein, and under certain conditions would be deflected downward into the chimney. I have therefore, provided the horizontal plate or deflector 7, so
that the upward currents rising through the ventilator will always strike it at an acute angle and be deflected outwardly, as at e.
By the arrangement I have shown, the horizontal currents of air are ,gathered toward the center of the device and directed upwardly over the chimney. It is impossible for currents entering; from any direction to be deflected into the chimney. It is impossible also for currents to sweep the edges of the lower cones and thus cause a downward suction through the chambers between them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, is-
l. A chimney cap and ventilator comprisingg,` a collar, a truncated cone secured by its top to the top of said collar, partitions secured in radial position upon said cone, al similar cone secured on said partitions, a
cap secured in spaced relation above said` cones, and a horizontal wing; secured to the lower edge of the upper cone.
2. A chimney cap and ventilator com prising a collar, a truncated cone secured by its top to the top of said collar, partitions secured in radial position upon said cone, a similar cone secured upon said partitions, guide-vanes secured in radial position on the upper cone, the base of said vanes being formed in the horizontal plane of the base of said cone, a horizontal wing' fixed upon the bases of said vanes, and a cap fixed above said cones, whereby currents of air are excluded from the chimney.
3. The combination in a chimney cap and ventilator, of a collar, a truncated cone secured by its top to the top of said collar, partitions secured in radial position upon said cone, a similar cone secured upon said partitions, a horizontal wing` secured at the base of the upper cone, and a cap comprising a cone having a broad horizontal baise, whereby down currents are prevented from entering; the chimney and the rising currents are deflected outwardly, secured centrally above said cones.
