Be it known that I, CARLOS HOLLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binder-Gluing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to gluing devices, and more mrticularly to devices for applying anadhesive, such as glue, paste. etc, to a continuous web as it is fed past the adhesive supply.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of efiicient means for feeding the adhesive and applying the same uniformly over a surface of the web.
Another object is the production of a simple device to control the thickness of the adhesive on the web.
Still another object is the provision of a practical apparatus for applying adhesive to a continuous web of com niratively thin material, and for tensioning said web so that it will be held inetiicient contact with the adhesive or glue su 'iplying devices.

The invention according v consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

The present application relates particularly to the gluing devices for the binder web as disclosed in the application above identified, but it will be understood that lite invention herein disclosed is not restricted to such application, but is intended to be employed wherever useful.
\Vebs which are employed as covers or binders for boxccs are often thin so as to be very pliable, having little stiffness, and it is one of the objects of my invention to eliicicntly apply a uniform surface of glue to a webof this character. Being thin and pliable, it is preferred to feed the web past the gluing devices by the mechanism described in my aforesaid application, in which the web is drawn past and in contact with the glue feeding roller. It is deemed unnecessary to illustrate the web feeding means in entire detail as said feeding means alone is not claimed in, this application.
In Fig. l of the drawings the gluing and tension device is illustrated in its pre ferred association with the web feeding mechanism of the application above identified. The numeral 1 indicates theframe of the box making machine, in which supported a roll of web 2 of paper or similar material suitable to cover and form a binder for a paper box. Preferably this web of thin paper, glazed on one surface. the glue to be applied to the unglazed surface. The roll of web 2 is supported on a mandrel or drum the web being led from the rear side of the roll downwardly in a loop, thence roll of web through the tension device and into contact w th the gluing device, being then led to a point where its end portion is seized by oscillating grippers 4 which feed or draw the web intermittently past the tension devices and the gluing apparatus. -The means for feeding the web is similar to that disclosed 111 the prior application, and gen-' erally described, comprises two gripper lingers 5 and '6 adapted to approach and recede from each other, and to be oscillated by the shaft 7 by means of the arm 9 connected to said shaft and a connecting rod 10 operated by an elbow lever 11, which is actuated by a cam 12 'on a shaft 13. Rotation' of the shaft 13 causes the cam 12 to move the lever 11 to intermittently oscillate the grippers to feed the w, it) forwardly, the return movement of the grippers being accomplished by the spring 14 secured to the elbow lever and'the frame of the machine. In order to relieve the gripper feeding mechanism from the resistance of the 'entire roll of web as the Web is fed, a pull bar 15 extends through the loop and is connected to a rock shaft 16 having an arm 17, a cam 18 on'the shaft 13 serving to vibrate the pull bar to unwind the roll 2 sufliciently to provide a slack portion of web, and this slack portion comprises the weight of web which is fed by the grippers. v
' It will beunderstood that the means for i driving the shaft 13 to oscillate the grippers v and vibrate the pull bar are similar to the means disclosed in the prior application, and it will also be understood thatthemechanism to open and close the grippers at the proper times is similar to that in said prior application.

from the rear side of the supply roll 2 the web passes downwardly and then upwardly along the front side of the same, forming a. depending loop below the roll, thence rearwardly, in ,zigzag fashion alternately with its opposite sides in engagement with a front horizontal tension roller 20 and a plurality of rear tension or retarding rods or bars 21,

In passing successively over and underneath the tension roller and bars or rods, a frictional resist ance or tension is produced on theweb which operates to retiird the forward move ment of the web, and causes the same to always'remain comparatively taut in passing overthe glue applying roller, scraper, ad-

thereby enables .these parts to operate properly upon this web. For the purpose of applying a further tensioning and braking efv feet on the web, a removable 'presser block 28 is provided which has a felt facing 29 on its under side whereby the same engages with the top-of the web as the same passes between the bars 21, 23 and which has a weight 30 on its upper side for producing the 'desired' pressure. As the web passes around the tension roller 20 and the several tension rods, the same is also guided :so as to be held in the proper posit-ion laterally for subsequent operation. For this purpose two side guides 31, 32 are provided which are capable of lateral adjustment, the left guide 3l -being adjustably connected with the adj acent stationary part of the machine, in the present instance the glue pot which is bolted to the frame, by a transverse adjustin screw 33 and slidable on the roller 20 and rods 21, 23, which are held relatively stationary by a bracket 34 connected with one.

1 For the purpose of causing a greater or less portion of the web to engage with the glue delivery roller and thus vary the tion on-opposite sides of'thefront part of the glue pot and pivotally support the adjusting roller at its opposite ends, a spring 39 being connected with one of the rock arms 38- and the frame and tending nor-. -mally to raise the adjusting roller, a hook or catch' 40 adapted, to engage with a or shoulder 11 on one of the adjustingroller I arms and hold the latter in its lowered operative position, an elbow lever 4:2 pivoted on the side of the glue pot and having the hook or catch 'pivoted on one of its arms, an adjusting rod 43 passing through a lug 4i on the side of the glue pot and pivotally connected at its front end with the other arm of the elbow lever, a spring 45 surrounding the adjustingrod between the lug l t on the glue pot and a collar 46 on the rod and operating to push the rod forwardly, and a screw nut 47 applied to the threaded rear end of the adjusting rod and engaging with the rear side of the lug 44. Upon turning the screw nut 47 in one direction or the other, the same in cooperation with the spring 45 causes the adjusting rod 43, to be moved either forwardly or backwardly and thus turn the elbow lever 42 so that the adjusting roller 26 is either raised or lowered, thereby enabling the web to be deflected more or less by'the scraper and thereby vary the scarfing effect of the latter shoulder or pin on the respective adjusting roller supporting arm. it will be observed that this construr on provides for the adjustment of the wco guide 26 relative to the web delivery roller Z-l and thus the extent of surface contact of the web and the roller 24 may be varied, resulting in the application of more or glue to the surface of the web. And it will be further noted that by disengaging the catch 40 from the arm carrying the adjusting roller, said roller may be raised into such a position either by hand or by its spring 2-9 to permit the ready unthrcading or re-threading of the web and that when the adjusting roller is returned to its operative position and rel'angaged by the catch 40, it will assume its original position, the catch 40 and its operating devices thus operating asa setting -;echanism for the adjusting roller; this setting mechanism being adjustable as before explained, so as to determine different operative positions of the adjusting roller 26 when desired. The surplus lue which is removed bythe sci-a; or from the web is returned to the pot. in order to permit the scrapcrto be adjusted so that it is parallel with theweb and leaves a film of glue thereon which is of uniform 'thicknessall the way across the web, means are provided: for adjusting this scraper relatively to the coated surface of the web, consisting of a bracket 48 rising from one side of the glue pot and supporting the fixed end of the scraper, a rock lever 49 pivoted on the opposite side ofthe glue pot and having one of its arms connected with the other movable end of the scraper, a vertical adjusting screw 50 connected at its lower end with the glue pot and passing upwardly, through the other arm of the scraper adjusting lever, a' spring 51 surrounding the adjusting screw between the top of theglue pot and the underside of the scraper lever and operating to turn the lever, when free, in the direction for lowering the movable end of the scraper, and 'a screw nut 52 which is applied to the upper threaded end ofthe adjusting screw and bears against the rear arm of the scraper lever which when tightened causes the scraper lever to be turned in the direction for elevating the movable end of the scraper and move the same toward the coated surface of the web, thereby enabling the scraperto be placed in parallelism with the web for obtaining a film of glue of uniform thickness throughout its width.
The tension devices hereinbefore described may be supported and secured in position by any suitable means, but it is preferred to provide the pot at its upper portion with forwardly projecting perforated lugs 53 and to support the guide rods 31 and 32 on a rod 54 passing through the openings in said lugs, said rod also supporting at its end the bracket 34. To securely brace the tension devices, the guide rods are provided with depending arms .whic h'rest against the frcnt wall of the pot.
In the present embodiment the rock arm 38 on the left side of the pot is provided with an arm 56,,substantially parallel with the arm 38, the pin 41 extending through the arm 56. By this construction the pin ll is securely braced and the arm 56 serves as a handle for manipulating the roller 26.
As the web 15} is drawn forward by the oscillating grippingdevices, the tension 'de vices cause the web to tautcn and to contact with theglue applying roller in its forward movement, the amount of longitudinal surface contact being regulated by the position of the adjusting roller 26. By said roller 26 a partial governing (if the amount. of glue supplied tothe web isetlected. The so 'aper bar may be to determine the ultimate thickness or depth of the glue allowed to reirain on the webfbeing a very accuratc1 means of regulation, especially for thin films of glue. By varying the weight 30, more or less tension may be applied to the web, varying also the gluing ellect of the roller 24: and the scarhng efi'cct of the scraper.
Thus it will be perceived that by the above described apparatus is provided a device which accomplishes, among others, the objects hereinbefore stated,
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it isintended that all matter contained in the above description-or shown in the accompanying drawings shall lib interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetwee'n.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, means for supply mg and feeding a web, means for coating said web with an adhesive, and means for removing the surplus adhesive from said web" comprising a scraper arranged in the path of the web, and means for adjusting said scraper comprising a lever connected with said scraper, a spring engaging with 'one side of the lever, and a screw nut engaging with the opposite side of the lever.
2. In an apparatus of the character do scribed, in combination, means for supplying and feeding a web, means for coating said web with an adhesive and removing the surplus adhesive from said web comprising an adhesive supply pot and a delivery roller adapted to turn with its lower part in the adhesive in the pot and deliver the same on its upper side to said web, a regulating roller around which said web passes, a rocking support for said latter roller, a spring connected with saidsupport and tendingto move said regulating roller away from said potand delivery roller, acatch engaging with said rocking support, and an adjusting mechanism connected Willi said catch.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, ,in combination, a web supply, a plurality of tension rods with each of which the web contacts, web guides mounted on' said rods, means to adjust said guides toward and from each other, and glue supply means associated therewith.
4. In an apparatus of the character dcsoribed, in combination, a web supply, a supporting frame, tension rods projecting therefrom each adapted to contact the web, web guides on said rods, means for adjusting said guides on said rods, and glue supply'means associated therewith.

a tension roller thereon, spaced tension rods carried thereby, a guide on the rods and roller, a second guide on the rods and roller spaced from the first guide, means for adjusting the position of said guides and glueapplying means associated therewith.
7. In an apparatus of .the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a roller there-in adapted to supply glue to a Web, an
adjusting roller adapted to determine the contact between the web and supply roller, supporting arms for the adjustin roller pivotally supported 011 the pot, a bracket supported on the pot, and tension rods supported by said bracket.
8. In an apparatus of the characterdescribed, in combination, a glue pot, armspivotcd thereon, a roller'carrr-d by the arms, means tending to move the arms in one direction,' and an adjustablecatch device to limit the extent of such movement.
9. In an apparatus of the character de scribed, in combination, a glue pot, arms pivoted thereon, a roller carried bythe arms, means tending to move the arms-in one direction, an angle lever pivoted on the pot,
a latch pivoted to the lever and engaging the arms, and means to adjust the position of the angle lever. I r
10. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a scraper bar secured at one end to one side of the pot, a pivotal ly mounted adjusting bar secured to theother side of the pot and to the other end of the scraper bar, and means to adjust the bar.
11. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue delivery roller, means for feeding a web in contact with the roller, :1 scraper over. which the web passes, an adjusting roller engaging the web, means to adjust the latter to ary the extent-- of surface contact of the web and delivery roller, and means to alinethe scraper with the web.'
19 In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue delivery roller, means to feed a web in contact therewith, movable means adapted to vary the extent of surface-contact of theweb and roller, and means adapted to set the latter means and permit: movement of the varying contact means without varying the setting means.
13. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue delivery roller, means to feed a Web in contact there with, a movable adjusting roller, means to set the adjusting roller with respect to the delivery roller, and means adapted to per mit relative movement of the rollers without changing the adjustment of the setting means.
14. In an apparatus of the cha acter described, in combination, a delivery roller, means to. feed a Web in contact therewith, pivotally supported arms, a Web adjusting device carried by said arms, yielding means adapted to move the arms in one direction, and setting mechanism adapted to limit the movement of said arms under the influence of the yielding means.

In an apparatus of the character described,- in combination, aglue delivery roller, means to feed a Web in contact therewith, pivotally supported arms, a Web adjusting device carried by said arms, yielding means adapted to move the arms in one direction, and setting mechanism adapted to limit the movement of said arms under the influence of the yielding means, comprising a movable engaging member.
16. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue delivery roller, means to "feed a web in contact therewith, pivotally supported arms, a Web adjusting device carriedby said arms, yielding means adapted to move the arms in one direction, and setting mechanism adapted to limit the movement of. said arms under the influence of the yielding means, comprising a pivotally mounted hook and means to 'adjustably position said hook.
11. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a glue delivery roller mounted therein, means to feed a Web in contact with sa-idroller. arms pivotally mounted on said pot, an adjusting roller carried by said arms, and setting mechanism for fixing the operative position of the adjusting roller.
18. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a glue delivery roller mounted thcrein,- means to feed a web in contact with said roller, arms pivotally mounted on said pot, an adjusting roller carried by said arms, and setting mechanism for fixing the operative, position of the'adjusting roller, comprising an elbow lever, a hook pivotally mounted thereon and adapted to engage said arms, a rod pivotally attached to the lever, and means for adjusting said rod.
19. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a glue delivery roller therein, guide rods pivotally connected thereto and adjustable toward and from each other, means to support the rods in predetermined position relative to the pot and tension rods supportedby said guide rods.
20. In an ap mratus ot the character described, in munliination, a glue pot, a glue (h-livery roller therein, guide rods pivotally suppor ed thereby and adjustable toward and tron; each other, tension rods supported by said guide rods, and braces between said pot and said tension rods.
21. in an apparatus of the character described, in conibimition. a glue pot, a glue delivery roller therein, guide riulspi .'otally supported thereby and adjustable to aid and from ea h other, tension rods supported by said-guide rods, arms depending from said guide rods and adapted to rest against the pot to form braces for said tension rods.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combiiuitimi, a glue delivery roller, means tor feeding a Web in contact with theroller. a tension device adapted to operate on the Web in advance of the glue roller, an adjusting roller adapted to contact the web in rear of the glue roller, :1 scraper adapted to contact the web inter mediate the adjusting roller and the glue roller, and means adapted to adjust the adjusting roller and the scraper, whereby the extent of surface contact of the Web with the glue roller and the angle of deflection between the Web and the scraper may be varied.
23. In an apparatus of the character described, in combii'iation,'a glue pot, a roller 'thcrcin adapted to supply glue to a Web, a
Web tensioning device. carried by said pot comprising a bracket, spaced tension rods laterally PltijtPilllQ therefrom, Web guides threaded on said rodls. and means to rela' tively adjust said guides.

In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a roller therein adapted to supply g ue to a web,;a Web tcnsioning device carried by said pot comprising a bracket, spaced tension rods laterally i u'oiecting thcreimm. adjustable web guides threaded on said rods, and a tension rod joined to one of said guides and adjustable therewith.

In an a maratus ot the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a roller therein adapted to supply glue to 'a web, a Web tcnsioning device carried by said potcomprising a bracket, tension rods carried thereby, a tension roller carried thereby, and relatively adjustable Web guides threaded on said rods and roller.
26. In an apparatus of the character described, in combination, a glue pot, a roller therein adapted to supply glue to a web, a web tensioniiu device carried by said potcomprising a bracket, laterally adjustable parallel rods carried thereby, guide rods transversely supported on the tension rods,
