To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, FOLGER ADAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oliet,
7 tellat a glance the exact condition of each door of the series, in this way preventing the positioning or locking of a single door from being overlooked, and also fixing the responsibility for the condition of thedoors. The .door action which my device is designed to control in cell doors is as follows, to positively lock and unlock all doors of a series in their closed position, to positively lock and unlock any door of a series while maintaining the remaining doors locked,-to lock and unlock anyand all doors in their wide open positiom'and to open and close any or all doors.- v
A further object of-my invention is to simplify the locking and operating mechanism of a series of jail doors reducing it to a single gang shaft controlled by a single locking lever to lock and unlock the doorsof the series individually at pleasure, and asingle operating bar actuated by an operating lever to control the movement of each or all of the doors.
In the drawings with which I have illustrated my device and which form part of this specification, I have illustrated the op plication of my invention to a series of two cell doors.
In these drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the cells partly broken away illustrating the locking mechanism with both doors locked, closed and the locking lever in its first position; Fig. 2 is a front elevation locked and open, the locking lever being in its fourth position; Fig. 4 is a section on the line X-X of Fig. 2 showing the operation of the locking bar and gang lock; Fig. 5 is an elevation of the lever box showing the locking and operating levers; Fig. 6 is a section on the line YY, of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a section on the line Z- Z, Fig. 1; Fig. 8 is a view of the locking bar and cam strap; Figs. 9, 10, 11 and 12 show the different positions of the pairs of cams upon the gang shaft at the two doors illustrated in the different positions of the locking lever.
In the above drawings I have "illustrated a series of cellfronts providedwith two sliding cell doors A and B. At the top of the doors a mechanism box C extends across the front of the cells and contains the operatin and locking mechanism. At the end oft e series of cells is a lever box D containing the levers controlling the: locking andoperating mechanism.
Each of the doors A and B is formed in the ordinary manner of a grating 2 fitted to close the cell front in one position and supported by grooved wheels 3 on a suitable track l' within the mechanism box C. The wheels 3 are journaled on an angle 5 which extends along the top of the door and underneath the track 24 carrying the door in its normal osition. The bottom of the door is guide by a stop angle 6 extending across the front of the cell.
One side'of the cell doorway is provided with a jamb piece 7 against which the door closes which has apertures 8 fitted to receive suitable locking members 9 carried by the front edge of the door. The locking members 9 are in the form of lugs having locking notches 10 on their upper sides which lie within-the door jamb 7 in the closed position,
of the" door. Within the door jamb 7 is a guard 11 which is fixed to the walls of the cell and is spaced from the door jamb by sleeves 12'upon the bolts 13 which connect the guard and door jamb allowing the entrance of the lugs 9 through the apertures 8.
Between the doorjamb and guard lies the locking bar 14 which has slotted apertures 15 to permit the sliding movement of the ulcer upon the bolts 13 and apertures 16 to of the cells'illustrating the operation of' either door with the locking lever in its cor responding second and third positions; Fig. 3 is an elevation showing both doors unreceive each of the locking lugs 9. The looking bar 14 in its lowest position engages the notches 10 of the locking lugs when the door is in its closed position, securely locking the door that position. The 'difie'rent rotative positions of the gang shaft secured through locking lever'27 are shown in, 'Figs. 1, 2 and 3 where the' lever 27 is shown engaging successively" notches 35, 36, 37 and 38' in the quadrant23' and the corresponding positions of the cam lugson'thetwo doors are shown respectively in Figsj9, 10, 11 and 12.

and [45,, The lugs 43 44 and 45 are-so positioned on the cam collars that when any of the lugsis in contact with either of the cam faces of. astrapnone of the other lugs are in contact with the other face of the cam strap. In Fig. 9 the lugs 44 on-both collars are in the locking down position and both bars-14 are heldin locking position. The corresponding position] ofIt-he locking lever 27 is shown in Fig. 1. By moving the lever to the full line"position shown 'inFig.
2 the gang shaft is rotated to the position shown in Fig. 10 engaging notch 36 on the quadrant 28. At the door A the lug 43 has come into contact with the face 32, raising the strap 39 and unlocking the door A.' TO
unlock the door B instead of the door A, the locking lever 27 mustbe moved to the dotted position shown in Fig. 2 engaging the notch 37 of'the quadrant and throwing the. gang shaft 21 into the position shown in Fig. 11.
The lug 43 at the door B raises the strap 40 and its attached bar 14 unlocking the door {B while door A is held locked by lug- 45 on the collar 39. By moving. the lever 27; into engagement with the-notch 3 8 as shown in Fig.3 lugs '44 at both doors are brought into contact with the faces '32 on straps 39 and 40 unlocking'both-doorsfA and B at the same time. The corresponding'position of the unlocking cams is shown inFig. 12.'
It is evident that the number of doors which-may be locked and unlocked by a single gang'shaft may be increased indefi nitely theessential feature being a seriesof cam lugs ositioned on the gang shaft adjacent to't e dilferent doors to unlock their respective lock bars in successive positions of the gang bar'and other cam lugs adapted to'maintainthe locked position of the lock bar of each door'except-when unlocked by its respective opening lug.
In connection with the locking mechanism and controlled by it is a door operating mechanism by means ofwhich the doors of a series may be operated individually or collectivelyv The operating mechanism consists of an operating bar 46 lying in the mechanism box G and extending above the series of'doors; The bar 46is supported by a series of supports 47 on which are journaled anti-friction wheels 48 between which the bar 46 slides. At its extremity the'bar is connected to thewall of the lever box by a lazy tongs 49 and reciprocated long1- tudinally by an operating lever 50 fulcrurned within the lever box and connected to the lazy tongs by a link 51,
-At the top of each door a support 52 'is attached to the angle 5 and carries a sliding catch 53 connected thereto by bolts 54 and adapted to slide vertically. At its upper end the catch 53 is formed with projecting points 55 embracing the sidesof the operating bar. An aperture 56 is providedwithin the catch adapted'to receive .a catch bar 57 pivoted within the mechanism box and slide on it; The catch bar 57 is pivoted at one side of the door-wayand extends through an aperture 58 in the cam strap and along the top of the door through the aperture 56 in the catch when the door is in its wide open ,position. The catch 53 during the movement of the door slides along the catch bar 57 and is adapted to be raised or lowered by any movement of the catch bar which -is itself moved about its pivot point by any motion of the cam strap.
The lower edge of the operating'bar is formed with notches 59 so positioned that with the doors in their closed position and the operating bar in its closed position they correspond to the catches 53 on the dilferent doors which may be raised to engage the notches whereby the longitudinal movement tion' of a door with the operating bar occursonly when the latch on that door is raised into engagement with the notch in the bar. This movement of the latch can occur only when the latch bar is raised by means of the cam strap through which it passes, and this movement in turn is produced by the action 4 of the cam lugs on the-gang shaft 21.
The longitudinal movement of the gang operating shaft is limited by stops and 61 attached to it which at the limits of movement impinge upon a 'pin 62 fixed in the' path of movement of the stops. The action of the stops prevents the too great movement of the. operating bar and a consequent straining of the catches which may be engaged with the notches of the bars.
Attached to the catch 53 is a lug 63 (see Figs. 2 and 7) having an extremity formed with a notch 64: which is adaptedto engage a suitable pin 65 fixed in the path of the lug when carried by the moving door. The pin is so positioned that when thedoor has been opened wide by the operating bar it lies below the notch 64: in the lug 6 3 and the move ment of the catch 53 which v detaches the door from the operating bar while inits open position engages the notch 64 upon the pin 65 holding the door in its open position until the'catcli has again been raised.
In operating my device to open anyone of the series of doors the locking lever 2-7 is moved to the notch in the quadrant 28 corresponding with. that doorand the door can then be opened by moving the operating lever 50. When the door has been opened 'ters Patent is:

In accordance with the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood'thatthe construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims. 7
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let- 1. A jail door locking mechanism, comprising, in combination, a door a locking member on said door, a reciprocating bar cooperating with said member to lock said door, a catch mounted on said door, an operating bar mounted in connection with said door and notched to engage said catch in one position thereof, a catch bar mounted on a fixed pivot and connected with said reciplocked.
2. A gang mechanism tori ail doors, comprlsmg, 1n combinatiom-a series of doors, a locking member in connection wlth each of said doors and adapted to lock said door,'a
gang shaft having an. operative connection with each of said locking members, means on said shaft to operate said locking members to lock and-unlocksaid doors individually or, simultaneously, in different positions of said'shaft, door operating means in connection with said series of 'doors and means in connection with each of said doors, operated by said locking member thereon to connect said door with said door operating means when unlocked.
3. A gang mechanism for jail doors, comprising, in combination, a series of doors, a locking member on each of said doors, a reciprocating locking bar in connection with each of said doors and adapted 'toengage said locking member to lock said door, a cam strap at the upper end of each of said bars, and a cam shaft in connection with the strapslof all of said bars and having cams thereon cotiperating with said straps to raise said bars separately in different positions of said shaft to unlock the individual doors of the series separately,. and simultaneously raised by said cams.
4. A jail door locking mechanism, comprising, in ,combinatiom'a series of doors, a locking member on each of said doors, a reciprocating locking bar in connection with each of said doors and adapted to engage said locking member to lock each door, a cam strap at the upper end of each of said bars, a cam oifsaid locking bar ad'aptedto turn in said strap said .cam strap having a cam lug and said cam having a circular face and a plurality of lugs thereon adapted in the revolution of said cam to impinge against said cam strap lug and raise each of said reciprocating bars individually out of engagement with said locking vmember, in
