Be itknownthatl, WALTER v ,TuuNEm 'a citizen .of 4the United States, residingat Edgewood, -in the A county of Allegheny .and- VState of Pennsylvania, have invented new and' useful Improvements in Steam-Pump Governors, of which the following is a speelicat-ion.
This invention relates to pressure regulating devices,- and more particularly'to a 'governor Afor controlling the admission of steam or other motive -fluid -to a pump 4for y compressing-fluid.
my improved The principal object of :my invention is to provlde an improvedfconstruction of the above character `capable of responding to slight variations inV thepre'ssure of the fluid- CQmPfeSSed by .the Pump-'and which is qui'k' and :positive in Vits .action and compact 1n-`v construction. l The single ligure' shown in the drawing is a. vertical section of apreterred fornuof pressure governor, and, as
shown, comprises a casing-1,' :ontaini ng a steam supply chamber 2, Open to supply pipe 3 and a steam outlet chamber Ltconnected to ipe 5, leading to the pump. Communication between chambers 2 and 4 is' controlled byha valve 6, which may be formed as a part of its operating piston 7. Thefpiston 7 comprises differential heads S and-9, the
larger head 8 being provided with a small leakage port 10 to permit the gradual equalization of pressures upon opposite sides of said head. .The outer face of the smaller head 9 is in 'constant-open communication with the atmosphere through passage lland is subject to the pressure of a coil'spring 12,
tending to move the piston 1n the direction of the head 8.
A vent port 23 leads from chamber 13 at the outer face of piston head S and is controlled by a valve 14 the actuation of which I` isfeitected by the movement of a'large diaphragin 15. The outer face Aot' this diaphragm is constantly exposed to the pressure of the fluid compressed b v the pump, the chamber 16 on that side of the diaphragm being connected to pump pressurethrough passage 17.
' An adjustable coil springl is interposed between a fixed abutment 19,- suitably secured' in the casing l and one end 'of the ,diaphragmspindle 20 and tends to move the' diaphragm 15 I outwardly-- in opposition Supeeieation of .Letters'lratent.

stan'ually" balanced,` thus -perlnitting lthe spring toshiftthe piston', and the valve '6 from its seat.. As soonyas this valve leaves its seat, it tvill be noted/that as the chamber Ltis opento'zthefsteam pressure from cham' ber' 2, a greaterarea' of the piston head 8 vis exposed' toV steam-pressure 'than-Was before exposed, in consequence of which, the quickly and f ositively to sure on the outer face' of thehead Swhich causes the piston 7` to movel inwardly and closethe valve 6,*thus cutting ott the admission'oi steam to and Astopping the pump.
A stem 25'may be interposed in the path of movement of piston 8, lso as to limit its butward movement and thereby prevent the restriction of'p'or't 23.
In order to preventv any tendency of the diaphragm spindle to turn and buckle or twist the diaphragm, a pin 26 is inserted in the diaphragm ring 2S, so as to project out into a slot Or notch 27 in the flange on the diaphragm end ofspindle 20.` Valve 14 is I preterably'provided with a stem 29, extending into-therport beyond the valve seat. By this means the wire drawing 'eil'fect of steam` onthe valve-seat isavoided, such ac- 2 noaaeea tion being transferred inthisfvvvay 'the outer end of-'the stem 29.
The above described construction v.of overnor is particularly adapted for han g low pressures, such as' are employed in gas transmission, and is; capable o operating positively. under smallwvariations in the:
. misslo'n'o steam to the pump, a piston for operating said valve, said pistonhaving two heads of different areas, the larger head. be-
- tuate said Jvalve and supplyV steam'l to the ing normally subject on opposite sides, to
steam pressure and the smaller head to fatmospzcric pressure on oneslde, and a regulating valve mechanism operating upon a reduction'in-the pressure of fluid compressed 'by theV plump forventing' steam from. one
side of elarger piston head tothere'by'ac- PumP- 2. A governor for steamfactuated umps comprism a valve for controllingt e admission o steam to the ump,'a.piston for operating said valve, sai iston having twoV heads of diiferent areas, t e larger head belng exposed on one! sideto steam pressure and having/ an equal'izing-port for normally' -site sides of said head andthe smaller head being constantly subject o'n one side,` to atmospheric pressure, a valve for controlling -an atmospheric vent port from-onegside 4of the larger piston head, and movable means operated upon a reduction in pump pressure for opening said vent' valve.'
' In-a pressure governor for pumps, the combination with a valve mechanism normally subject-on one sideto steam pressure or controlling the admission of.- steam to the pnip and a zregulating valve mechanism subjectv to variationsin the pump pressure for ventingsteam from said valve mechanism to operate th'e same, of means adapted upon the unsea'ting of said valve mechanism to expose an increased area thereof to steam pressure .-to thereby effect a quick' opening movement of said valve mechanism.
4. AIn a'pressure governor for pumps, the combination with avalve'for controlling the admission-of Isteam to the pump, a plston normally subjectV on opposite sides to steam pressure for actuating said valye and a regulating device subject to pump pressure for venting steam from one side of. said piston, of meansoperating upon the preliminary openingmovement of said iston-for exposlng an Increased. area of t e opposite'side of said piston to steam pressure.
In testimony whereof I have-hereunto set I my hand- WALTER V. TURNER. Witnesses: WM. M.. Cam',
