Letters Patent No. 103,464, dted May 24, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT m -snnn-sowsns.
The Schedule referred to in these 'Letters Patent and making part of the samo To all` whonrit may conce-r Be it known that I,`THOMAS HOWELL, of Morgantown, in the county of Monongalia and in the State of XVest Virginia, have invented certain new 'and useful Improvements in Seed-Sowers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my inventioncousists in the formation of the notches on the rod or slide of a hand seed-sower, in such a mann'er that the chati' contained in the seed will be forced away from-the holes in the bottom, and out of the notehes in the rod, as will be hereinafter set forth.`
Iu order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,I
will now proeeed to describe its Construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in-which+ Figure 1 is a plan view of the entire seed-sower; Figure 2 is a side View of a portion ot' the rod or slide, with a longitudhal vertical section of the hottom; and
. Figure 3 is a bottom view'of a portion of the slide. A represents the box, provided with a perforated bottom, B, through which the seed' is distributed.
This box is, by means of two partitions, O O, di-
. vided into tlu'eecompartments, and upon the bottom B is placed the rod or slide D, uoving in slots in the lower ends of said partitious.
Upon the slide D, in the center compartment, is a standard, E, on the upper end of which is pivoted a lever, G.
One end of this lever is also pivoted on the -front edge of .the box A, and its rear end, forming a liandle, passes under a guide, H, on 'the rear edge of the box. By moving this lever from -side to side, the slide D obtains the required motion to distribute the seed through the pert'orations in the bottom B.
'In the guide-bar H are holes c a in either oie of which a pin may be inserted, so as to increase or diminish the distance the slide Dmay be moved.
wow-
In .the under side of the slide D is a series of notehes, 'I I, cut in the following manner:
First, a square edge, b, extending about one-eighth of an inch in the rod, for the purpose of carrying a column of seed parallel with the holes iu the bottom B, said holes or perforations being, as, usual, in a straightline.
On each side of the notch' there is cut a slant or bevel, d, for the purpose of running und'er the seed, and forcing it up into the circular outs e e, one on 'each side of the rod, These circular cuts have a hearing ou the seed, outward and upward, and work, in connection with the bevels (l, to force the chafl to escape out of the notch.
The ohati', being lighter than the sced, will rise to the top, but, in the common seed-sowers, the square face of the uotch will prevent its escape; My eireular cuts not only cuts out the square face at the top, to prevent the collection ot' chatt, but they force it to escape.
It ivill readily be understood that, while in the old style seed-sowers, having square notehes, the rightand-left motion of the slide causes a collection, right in the center of the notch, of the chaff, and, said notch being about three-qnartcrs of an inch wide, it cannot escape; that my notch, being i'ormed as above described, will carry a square columuat the bottom, the bevels will run under the collection of seed in the center of the'notch, forcing it upward, and the circular outs will force it clear of' the 'od.
Having thus fully described my invention, V
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a seed-sower, the rod or slide'D, when providedwith notehes I I, formed as described, having a square edge, I), bevels d d, and circular cuts e e, all substantially as and for the purposes lerein set forth.
In testimony tha-t I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand this 3lst day ofJanua-y, 1870.
THOMAS HOWELL. Witnesses: i
W. T. Kuna', URIAH RIDER.
