CLAUDE S. SACK, SPRINGFIELD, NEBRASKA.
ELEVATED CARRIER.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, CLAUDE S. SACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Sarpy, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elevated Carriers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in elevated carriers of that type which are commonly known as dumping buckets.
The principal object of the invent-ion is to provide an attachment for such carriers for automatically returning the buckets to their normal positions after being dumped.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for the purpose de scribed which can be readily applied to any bucket and which is composed of a minimum number of parts and is cheap to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sac rificing any of the advantages of the inven tion.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an elevated bucket showing my invention associated therewith, Fig. 2 is an end View of the bucket, Fig. 3 is an end elevation, showing the bucket in its dumping posit-ion, Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view through the lever-bearing, and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view through one end of the bucket and the lever attachment, parts thereof being shown in elevation.
Like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings. I
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates an elevated dumping bucket having a bottom 6, side walls 7 7 and end walls 88. Secured to the outer faces of the end walls 8 are plates 9, which are provided at their tops with outwardly projecting flanges 10, and centrally formed in these flanges are Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 9, 1911.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912: Serial No. 607,488.
openings 11. A squared bolt 12 projects through each end wall 8 and through the plate 9, and mounted upon the projecting end of the bolt is a washer 13. A bail 14: has its ends 1515 rotatably mounted upon the washer 13, the bail above its ends being normally seated within the opening 11 of the plate 9. The invention further comprises a crank-arm 16 having one end 17 thereof fixedly secured upon the squared bolt 12, and having its other end 18 projecting outwardly and disposed beyond the bail 14;.
Secured to the bail 1 1, and preferably above the bucket, is a clamp consisting of a clamping element 19, which is secured to the bail by means of a U-bolt 20 and nuts 21. An opening 22 is centrally formed in the element 19, and disposed in said opening is a bolt 28, the threaded end 2st projecting outwardly from said element. Fulcrumed upon the bolt 23 is a lever-arm 25 having a weight 26 adjustably mounted on the long arm thereof. Pivotally connected to the free end of the short arm of the lever, by means of a pin 27, is one end of a link 28, the other end of said link being pivotally connected to the crank-arm 16, by means of a pin 29. It will be observed that the lever 25 is disposed in a plane parallel to the end 8 of the bucket, and the weight 26 is spaced from said end wall. As a result, neither the lever 25 nor the weight 26 thereof is disposed in a position which will not interfere with either the loading or the tilting of the bucket.
In operation, when it is desired to dump the bucket the crank-arm 16 will be rotated therewith, and as a result, the link 28 will necessarily draw down the short arm of the lever 25, and thereby raise the long arm which carries the weight 26. Immediately upon the dumping of the bucket and upon the release of the same, the weight 26 will cause the lever to swing upon its fulcrum and, through the medium of the link 28, pull upon the crank-arm 16, and thereby return the bucket to its normal position. After the bucket completes its movement the bail 14 will engage within the openings 11 of the plates 9, and thereby automatically lock itself in position to receive the next load.
WVhile only one of the lever attachments has been shown, it is obvious that a similar construction can be secured to the other end of the bucket, should it be desired.
lVhen it is desired to dump the bucket,
the operator takes hold of the side of thebucket adjacent the weighted end of the lever, and bears down upon the same. It will of course be obvious that a chain can be employed if desired for this purpose, and inasmuch as a chain is a common expedient in the art it is not deemed necessary to show the same. Upon release of the bucket the same will return to its normal position, I
as above described.
What is claimed is l. The combination with a bucket having end walls, of a bail pivotally connected thereto, a lever fulcrumed on the bail, a weight mounted on the long arm of the lever, and a link pivotally connected at one end to one end wall of the bucket and the other end pivotally connected to the short arm of the lever.
2. The combination with a bucket having end walls, of a bail pivotally connected thereto, a lever fulcrumed on the bail and disposed in a plane parallel to the contiguous end wall of the bucket, a weight mounted on the long arm of the lever, and a link pivotally connected atone end to one end wall of the bucket and the other end pivotally connected to the short arm of the lever.
The combination with a bucket having end walls, of a bail pivotally connected thereto, a lever fulcrumed on the bail, a weight adjustably mounted on the long arm of the lever, and a connection between one end wall of the bucket and the short arm of the lever.
l. The combination with a bucket having end walls, of squared bolts extending outwardly through the end walls, Washers mounted on said bolts, a bail having its ends loosely mounted upon the washers, a crankarm secured to the bolt to rotate therewith, a clamping element secured to the bail above one of the end walls, a lever fulcrumed on the element, a weight mounted on the long arm of the lever, and a link pivotally connecting the crank-arm and the short arm of the lever.
5. The combination with a bucket having end walls, of squared bolts extending outwardly through the end walls, washers mounted on said bolts, a bail having its ends loosely mounted upon the washers, a crankarm secured to the bolt to rotate therewith, a clamping element secured to the bail above one of the end walls, a lever fulcrumed on the element and disposed in a plane par-- allel to the contiguous end wall of the bucket, a weight mounted on the long arm of the lever, and a link pivotally connectingv the crank'arm and the short arm of. the lever.
6. The combination with a bucket having end wills, of squared bolts extending outwardly through the end walls, washers mounted on said bolts, a bail having its ends loosely mounted upon the washers, a crankarm secured at one end to the bolt to rotate therewith, the other end of the arm extending outwardly beyond the bail, a clamping element secured to the bail above one of the end walls, a lever fulcrumed on the element, a weight mounted on the long arm of the lever, and a link pivotally connecting the crank-arm and the short arm of the lever.
7. The combination with a bucket having end walls, of squared bolts extending outwardlythrough the end walls, washers mounted on said bolts, a bail having its ends loosely mounted upon the washers, a crankarm secured to the bolt to rotate therewith, a clamping element secured to the bail above one of the end walls and provided with a centrally disposed opening, a bolt arranged within the opening and having its threaded portion projecting therebeyond, a lever fulcrumed on the bolt, a weight mounted on the long arm of the lever, and a link pivotally connecting the crank arm and the short arm of the lever.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
