Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Application vtiled` March 7, 19,07. Serial No. 361,106.
Pawtucket7 in the county of Providence and in the State of Rhode lsland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Automatic Cross- Slide- Operating Means, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a frontelevation of a portion of an automatic turret lathe embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a rear elevation ofl the same; and Fig; 3 a Icross-section. A
The object of my invention lis to simplify theconstruction 4and facilitate the adjustment of automatic cross -slide operating mechanisms, and Ito this end my invention .consists in the mechanism constructed substantially as hereinafter specified and claimed.
To illustrate my invention I show it embodied" in an automatic turret lathe of the class forming the subject of Patent No.`
752,257, February 16, 1904, to Potter & Johnston Machine'Co., in which lathe the turret-carrying ,slide A mounted upon the lathe bed or frame B is reciprocated by means of ycam/plates c secured to the periphery of a` drum C, mounted upon a shaft D, and revolved `by means of, a spur gear c attached tothe drum, ivitli which meshes a driving pinion Z'on a sha-'ft D receiving motion from some suitabley source.
Thevcross-slide E is mounted in a guide block e on thejvlathe bed, and at the rear side of the machine is projected beyond said block, andis provided With a rack F on its underside, with which meshes a gear segment Gon a rock ings at the rear of the machine. To rock the shaft to reciprocate the cross-slide automatically, said shaft is provided` With a gear segment I, with Which meshes a rack 7c on the rear end of a ,reciprocable bar K that vextends toward the front of the machine,
diametrically across the cam drum, and has at its end, at the front side of the machine, a projection or roller 7c in the pat-l1 of cam plates L, adjustably secured tof/the adjacent side of the drum C, Which cams, by alternate 'engagement of the projection or roller, reciprocate the bar K, andl thus rock the anwesende actuating shaft to move the crossshaft -H journaled in bearslide for feeding its tools to and from the Work, secured in the usual chuck M. The rear rack-carrying portion of the bar K passes over and is supported by a friction roller N, supported by a bracket aettacned to the bed of the lathe, and-the forward portion ofthe bar K is slot-ted .to pass over the drum shaft D., by which it is supported at this point. The cam plates L are secured to the drum C by means ofbolts Z and continuous, annular T-slots c2 in the side of the Adrum C. By the mechanism described, it
will be seen that the reciprocation of the cross-slide is automatically eected.
For moving the cross-slide by hand, which is necessary for properly timingr the action of the cross-slidetcols with reference to the turret tools, Athe cross-,slide at its end at'the front 'of' the machine is provided With a rack O, with which meshes a pinion P on a shaft journaled in the cross-slide supporting block e, and having a squared end for the application of a crank by which to revolve the pinion to move the cross-slide.
In adjusting the machine for Work, the
atlng pinion P, the cross-slide is moved to' place the cross-slide tool at the limit of the feed to be given it by its feeding cam L, and then the feeding cam L tightened in such position on the drum that its high point will engagel the roller on the bar K, andy the return cam L tightened in proper position to retract the cross-slide after the feed for cutting has been ended.
As the cam-engaging roller on the bar K isA at the front side of the machine, the manipulation-s or adjustments of the cam plates L, which are made with reference to said bar roller, can be made by the workman at the front of 4the machine, and as the crank shaft for adjusting the position of the/cross- C, it will be ,seen that the adjustment of the .y n l -machine/ can be accomplished without movement of the workman from the front of the machine, so that the time for adjustment' of the machine is reduced to a minimum. The
mechanism for automatically moving lthe the ineens for transmitting motion from the Cams L to the rook shaft segment I consist simply of the roller-carrying bei: K.
Although I have shown und deseribediny invention :is embodied in a machine having certain details ot construction, it. is to be un dei-stood that my invention muy be embodied in machines differently constructed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. In e lathe, the combination of :i cross slide, a ber, operative connection betiyeen the bar and the Cross slide, whereby movement of the bnr'is imparted to the Cross slide :ind movement of the cross slide is imparted to the bar, n drum, Cams adapted to court with the bm' to impart. movementthereto, means connect-ing the cams Lmd the drinn whereby the Cams may be either fixedly secured to the-drums or loosened therefrom, and ineens for operating` the cross slide by hand independently of the cum operated connections.
2. In n lathe, the combination of :L Cross slide, a bar, iperzitive connection between the bar and the eress slide, whereby moyement of the bnr isfiinparted to the cross .slide und movement of the cross slide is imparted to the bur, Comprising- :i rock shaft, 21 geur Connection between the reel; shaft and the cross slide1 and :i gen1' connection between the bar and the rook shaft, e drunn'eams adopted to. eoaet with the bar to impart ymovement thereto, means connecting the c ing the cross slide by hand independently,
of the cam operated connections.
3. In elet-he, the combination ein Cross slide, a bnr, operative eonneetionbetween the bnr and the cross slide, whereby movementof the cross slide is imparted to the bar, comprising a roel: shaft, a gear AConnee tion between the rock shaft. and the cross slide, and a gear connection betweenithe bar, :md the roek shaft., the part of the ber-engng'ed by theeems and hand operated means beingat the front of the machine, a, drum, cams adapted to Coact with the bar to iin-y part movement thereto, ineens connecting the cams and the drum whereby the' Cjims may be either tixedly secured to the drums or loosened therefrom, and ineens for-perating the cross slide by liandgindepen'dently v l of the eem operated Connect-ions.
In testimony thatl I Chinn the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
