SWIVEL-HOOK.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that T, MATTHEW J. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Swivel-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to high grade swivel hooks and has for its essential objects the avoidance of the use of solder at the points of maximum strain,the thorough protection of the operating spring against dislodgment, improved action of the tongue, inexpensiveness of construction, and sightliness.
To the above ends primarily my invention consists in such novel parts and combinations of parts as fall within the scope of. the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification Figures 1 and 2 are front and side elevations respectively of my novel swivel hook, Fig. 3, a section on line a; 00 of Fig. 2, Figs. t and 5 plan and side elevations respectively of the hook blank, Fig. 6, a detail view of the spring, Fig. 7, a side elevation of the hook blank showing one end engaged with the spring, Fig. 8, a like elevation of blank engaged at both ends with the spring, Fig. 9, a side elevation of the barrel, and Fig. 10, a like elevation of the barrel and hook blank assembled.

My novel swivel hook is thus constructed. A barrel A is drawn up from thin metal comprising a substantially conical shaped body portion a, a reduced cylindrical neck portion 0; and a terminal annular shoulder (4 The top of the body is provided with the usual opening a to admit the operative parts. Loose on the neck portion a is the collar B retained by the shoulder a and the body portion a; and to the collar is attached the usual ring 6.
The hook blank is stamped up from a metal blank which, as shown in Figs. 4 and Specification bf Letters Patent.

5, consists of an oblong bar C provided upon its upper face at one end with a longitudinal groove 0 and at its other end with a like groove 0 opening into a curved recess 0 By reason of the stamping of the metal blank there are resultant ears (Z at each side of the groove 0, and ears (Z at each side of the groove 0'.
A spring is constructed which is shown in detail in Fig. 6. This is bent up from a spring wire and consists of a circular loop 6 terminating in a short arm 6' and a long arm 6 the arms forming relatively to each other an obtuse angle. The bar C is bent into a partial loop, as shown in Fig. 8, with one of its ends adjacent the longer opposite end of the blank. The spring arms or ends 6 and 6 rest respectively in the grooves c and c, and the loop 6 of the spring is housed in the recess 0 The described spring parts are held in position by swaging the ears (Z tightly in around the arm 6', and the ears (Z snugly against the arm 0 The latter arm preferably extends clownwardly beyond the end of the bent blank and bears against the wall of the barrel. The looped blank C has its converging ends inserted through the opening a into the barrel A and is fixed therein by a rivet f passing through the body portion a of the barrel and through an opening f in the blank C. The blank C is finally diagonally sawed in the usual manner as at 9 whereby is formed the hook end H and the tongue I.
It will be noted that no pivot member for the tongue I is required in the barrel wall, nor are trunnions necessary thereon. The entire pivotal action of the tongues is in the circular loop 6. Furthermore the spring member is securely held against accidental dislodgment by its seat and attachment.
