Be it known that we, Gnonen W. Dress and CHRISTIAN F. Bnox, citizens of the United States,residing each-at Steelton, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in T-Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The present'invention aims to provide, in
arail having a removable tread, a novel means for holding the tread upon the raih and to provide iioi'el meansforreinforcing the rail at theyjoint between the body mem} bers, the-said reinforcing means serving also to hold theiread in place upon the body members.

In carrying out the intention there 1s provided. a pair of bodj members 1 the joint between which is der :edby the numeral 2.

Each body member 1 includes a web 5, a base flange-(1' and a ball 7, located upon one side only of each tread member. In the inner faccof 'the ball 7 there is a recess 8, and overhanging the recess 8 is a rib 9.
The invention further includes a primary splice bar'denoted by the numeral 10, and an oppositely disposed, secondary splice bar denoted by the numeral 11. The'primary splice bar 10 isfashioned along its upper edge,.and' upon its inner face with an inwardly projectingrib' 12, below which is rib 14, there beinga recess 15 between the ribs 12 and 14. The'.secondary splice bar 11 is engaged along its upper edge with' the under faces of the balls '1v of'the body members 1 it being understood,'of course, that the splice bars 10 and 11 extend across the joint between the body members 1. Both of the splice bars 10 and 11 are laterally prolonged, as indicated at 17, to lie along the upper faces of the base flanges 6 of the body members 1, the parts I? tor minating 1n depending side members 18 extended across the longitudinal edges of the base flanges 6, the parts 18 terminating in extensions 19 prolonged below the lower faces of the body members 1, the extensions 19'terminating in approaching feet 20 extended beneath the base flanges 6 of the body members 1. j

Securing elements, preferably taking the form of bolt and nut structures 26 extend through the primary splice bars 1 0,thr0ugl? the secondary splice bars 11, and through the webs 5 of the body members 1, upon both sides of the joint 2 between'the body members 1. Other bolt and nut connections 27 extend through the parts 19 and 20 of the splice bars 10 and 11, the elements 27 being located below the base flanges 6 of the body members 1. At this placeaitmay be. noted, referring particularly to Fig. '2, that the parts 19 and 20 are located at the terminal portions only of the bodymembers 1, adjacent the joint 2. The grip bars 21 are secured to the Web 5 of each body member 1 by means of bolt and nut connections 28. The tread members 3 comprise a ball 29, a Web 30 and a flange 31.
In practical operation, the tread member 3 is mounted in place upon the body members 1, to extend across the joint 2 therebet-wee i1,
one of the flanges 31 of the tread member 3 being engaged by the rib 9 of the ball 7 the other flange 31 of the tread member 3 being engaged by the flange 22 of the grip bar 21 and by the flange or rib 12 of the primary splice bar 10. The rib 23 of the grip bar 21 engages beneath the Walls of the body members 1, and the rib 14 of the primary splice bar 10 is similarly engaged. The feet 20 of j the splice bars 10 and 11 engage beneath the base flanges 6 of the body members 1,
the upper edge of the splice bar ll eng'aging beneath the ball 8, as shown most clearly in Fig. 5. It will be understood readily.. referring to- Fig. 2-, that the parts 19, which co'ciperate with the parts 20 of the slice bars 10 and 11, serve, to reinforce the poly members 1 at the joint'2. The tread members 3 are preferably fashioned fromharder material than the body members 1, to withthe device at the joint.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, body members; a tread extended across the jointbetween the body members; splice bar's applied to opposite sides of the body members and extended across the joint between the body members, one of splice bars being engaged with the body embers only, and
the other splice bar being engaged with the body members and with the tread,- both splice bars being provided with elements engaged beneath the bodylmembers; mass for connecting said elements below the body' members; grip bars applied to one side of the body members, between adjacent splice bars; and means for connecting the grip bars with the body members the lateral edges of the body "members being engaged by the splice bars only 2.
