WAGON-SPOKE EXTRACTOR.

and ISAAC W. SMITH, citizens of the United States, residing at Cooperstown, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Spoke Extractors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to spoke removers and the principal object of the same is to provide a remover having gripping means so arranged that increase of resistance of the spoke to removal will cause an increased pressure of the gripping means on the spoke so that there will be no tendency to slip.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in side elevation of the improved extractor. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view showing the manner in which the jaws are mounted upon the collar. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the end of one of the jaws.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that the improved extractor comprises a substantially U-shaped body portion having a head 1 and a pair of parallel arms 2 and 3, the ends of which are beveled to conform to the contour of a wheel hub. The Head 1 is provided with a centrally located threaded opening through which a threaded bolt 4 passes. A collar 5 is secured to the inner end of the bolt upon which there is mounted a cross bar 6 which extends beyond the arms 2 and 3. Links 7 and 8 are secured to the ends of the cross bar by means of the hinge ears 9 and 10 which are positioned to each side of the cross bar and pivotally connected with the same by means of the bolts 11. The lower ends of the links are also provided with hinge cars 12 and 13 to which the outer ends of the jaws 14 and 15 are pivotally connected by means of bolts 16. The jaws are provided with curved inner ends 17 which are positioned between the side arms 2 and 3 and are provided with grooves 18 which cause the jaws to tightly fit the spoke so that the spoke can be more firmly gripped. A collar 19 has its side portions 20 provided with longitudinally extending slots through which the arms 2 and 3 pass so that the collar is slidably mounted upon the arms. The collar is provided at each end with an outwardly and upwardly extending lug 21 and 22, each of which is provided with hinge ears 23. The jaws 14 and 15 are pivotally connected intermediate their length with hinge cars 23 by means of bolts 24 so that when the bolt 4 is turned by the handle 25 the cross bar will be raised and the. arms will be moved in wardly and upwardly. The free ends of the arms 2 and 3 are connected by means of a collar 26 which is held to the arms by means of the bolt 27 so that the arms are prevented from spreading.
In the operation ofthis device the extractor is placed upon the hub 28 with the arms 2 and 3 to each side of the spokes 29. The bolt 4 is turned so that the cross bar 6 is moved down far enough to permit the arms to be brought into engagement with the spokes. The bolt 4 is then turned in the opposite direction to raise the cross bar 6 which rocks the jaws upon the pivot bolts 24 to cause the j aws to move within the arms 2 and 3 and more tightly grip'the spoke. As the cross bar is raised the jaws and collar aredrawn upwardly and'the jaws are rocked inwardly so that the spoke is tightly gripped. As the pressure is increased the spoke will be gripped tighter until the spoke is loosened and can be easily removed. It will thus be apparent that there is no danger of the jaws slipping from the spoke.
What we claim is 1. In a device of the character described, a body portion, a collar slidably mounted upon said body portion, gripping jaws pivotally connected to said collar, and common means for moving said collar longitudinally upon said body portion and rocking said aws.
2. In a device of the character described, a body portion, a collar slidably mounted upon said body portion, hinge ears formed upon said collar, gripping jaws pivotally connected with said hinge ears, links pivotally connected to the outer ends of said jaws, a cross bar passing through said body portion and having its outer end pivotally connected to said links, and means connected with said cross bar whereby said cross bar can be moved longitudinally of said body portion to rock said jaws and move said collar longitudinally upon said body portion.
3. In a device of the character described, a body portion, having a pair of parallel arms, a collar having its sides provided with longitudinal slots said arms passing through said slots to slidably mount said collar upon said arms, a lug extending from each end of said collar and provided with spaced hinge ears, aws pivotally mounted between said ears, and means for moving said collar longitudinally upon said arms, and for rock- 10 ing said jaws.
