Be it known that I, GEORGE l-I. SMITH, citizen ofthe United States, andresident of Nut-ley, in `the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following'is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting machines and more particularly to the type actions of such machines.
The main objects of my invent-ion are to providel anelicient and easyactingtype action and one in which the parts are so constructed and arranged that the type basket may be shifted to change the case position of the typebars.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in lthe features of construction, arrangements of parts and combinations of devices to be hereinafter' described and claimed.

The frame of themachine comprises a base 1, cornerposts 2 and a. top plate 3. A carriage (not shown) of suit-able construction is mounted upon the top plate of the machine in the usual, orany preferred,
manner to travel from side to side thereof under control of escapement mechanism, the carriage carryin a cylindricalplaten 4, diagrammatically s -own in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. Key 'levers 5 are provided with ng'er keys 6 and are' fulcrumed on a fulcrum nar 7l secured to the base of the machine by screws f8. Each key lever is connected to one end 'of a contractile restoring spring 9 which is connected at its opposite end to a hook-like member 10 forming part of a plate- 11 secured to the base of the machine by screws 12. Upwardly extending links-l are each plvoted at one end as at 14 to a key lever 5 and at its opposite end to a forwardly extending arm of an angular sub-lever 15 lpivoted at 16 to a hanger 17 secured by screws 18 to a segment 19. From an inspect-,ion'of Figs. 1 and 2 it will-be seen that the hangers 17 are all vertically disposed and are segmentally arranged and that the angular levers 15 are at gradually higher elevations frcm the center to the sides of the system. The upright arm of each angular lever is pivoted at 20 to a forwardly extending link 21 which in turn is pivoted at 22 to a sub-lever 23'interniediate the ends f the latter. Each sub-lever is pivoted at its forward end as at 24 to a hanger 25 secured by screws 26 to a segment 27. The hangers 25 are bifurcated pto receive the sub-le`vers and extend rearwardly from their supporting segment, whereas the hangers 17 are bifurcated to receive the angular levers 15 and-extend forwardly from their, supporting segment 19. The rear end of each sub-lever 23 is pivotedV at 28 to a link 29 which in turn is of a type bar 31. rom aninspection of the drawings it will be seen that each sub-lever 23 is arranged longitudinally fore and aft of the machine and extends' in the same general direction as the companion 4link 29 to which it is .pivoted, each link 29y and its com- 4panion lever 23 being arranged end to end. The hangers 25, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig, 2, are all vertically disposed and are segxnentally arranged. The segmental arrangement 'of the hangers 25 corresponds substantially to the segmental arrangement of the hangers 17 so that the hangers 25 are at progressively greater elelvations from the center to the sides of the system.
The type bars are segmentally arranged to strike upwardly and rearwardly against the front face of the platen and are arranged in two oups, one group heilig pivoted at 32 to ra ially disposed segmentally,arranged hangers 33, and the other group being piv oted at 34 to a set of hangers 35 having a like disposition but being arranged at a higherlevation than -the hangers The 45 vsupported by a fixed portion of the machine'.
TheA fixed auxiliary frame carries forwardly" extending lugs 51 tapped to receive screws type bar hangers of both sets arepreferably substantially U-shaped as indicated in Fig. 2. The type bars of bothfgroups extend forwardly to essentially the same transverseplane in a basket by reason `of the 45 arrangement of the vpivots 32 and 34 of the two groups of type bars, the ends offthe type bars being supported upon a pad 36 which in 'turn' 1s supported in a trough-like member 37 which constitutes a partnof the segment 27 'he segment 27 is connected by bars 38 to the type bar segment 39" as shown in detail in Fig. 5 so that the segments 27 and 39 constitutefa frame which may be 'shifted together with the parts which are Acarried thereby. Thus parallel guide links 40 are pivoted at their forward ends as at 41 upon shouldered pivot screws which pivotally connect the links to the type bar segment. The rear ends of the links are pivotediby shouldered pivot screws 42 to upwa-rdly extending arms`43 that constitute part of af/ixed auxiliary frame shown -in` detail in fFig. 4 and which is detachably fixed in the main fra-mey of the machine. A rock shaft 44, shown in detail in Fig.' 6,'is mounted at its ends on pivot screws 45 which are received in threaded openings in the bosses 46 of the fixed auxiliary frame andl extend inwardly from the outer sides thereof. This` rock shaft is provided with rwardly extending integral arms 47 con- Y, nected by shouldered pivot screws 48 tothe 52 which'extend in opposite directions and the inner ends of which constitute stops with which the outwardly projecting ends 53l of theshouldered screws 48' coperate, it being understood that the ends 53 ofV said screws project'beyond the sides of the segment 39 and between the coperative stops 52 in order to limit the shifting movements of the shiftable frame. Contraetile springs 54 are arranged upon opposite sides of the machine, one end of each spring havingl its' convolutes surrounding anexteriorly threaded-member 55 that is tapped toreceive a` headed' screw 56 which extends through an opening in the top plate of the machine, the head 57 ofthe screw being supported uponthe topY` plate. By this arrangement a turning of the screws 56 adjusts the pressure applied by -the springs. The lower end of each spring is connected to an apertured lug 58 on Ione of the arms 47. The power of the springs 54 is thus exerted to normally maintain the shiftable frame in its elevated position where the lower case type 59 on each type bar is adapted to co-act with the platen as indicated in Fig. 1. Flach ar1n-47 has a depending lug 60 lthereon'to which a link 61 is pivoted. The lower end of each link is pivoted to a shift lever 62 provided with a'fnger key 63.in the 'keyboard of the machine and at each side of the keyboard.
By vreason of the rigid connection betweenthe arms 47 an actuation of either of the shift keys is effective to move the shiftable frame downwardly against the pressure-of the springs 54, as indicatedin Fig. 3, in order that -the upper case type 64 of each type bar may be positioned Vso as tobe brought to the printing point when the type bar is actuated. It will be observed that in shifting the type basket from the position shown in Fig.1 to that indicated in Fig. 3
.that the type bars, 'the .links 29, levers 23 and forward ends of the links 21 move together, whereas the angular levers, links 13, and key levers remain at rest. During this shifting movement of the parts the forward endsy of the links 21 receive a shifting movement with the type basket, the links turning on the pivots^20 which connect them to the angular levers.
The construction is such that the sets of links 29, levers 23 and links 21 eachhave i a segmental arrangement that corresponds substantially to the segmental arrangement of the system of typel bars, and the hangers 25,117 and angular levers 15 also have a corresponding arrangement so that asl the sides of the system of type bars are approached the actuating members and the parts that carry them are at gradually increasing elevations which correspond sublstantially to t-he increasing elevations at which the'type bars are mounted. The links 13 gradually increase in length from the center to the sides of the system, as indicated in Fig. 2, in order to compensate for the difference in the elevation of the angular levers 15 as the sides of the system are approached.
The construction of each type action is such that an easy start may be effected at the initial portion of the stroke and the movement. of the type bar is accelerated as ii; approaches'the printing point. A depression of a fingerkey 6 effects a turning l movement of the corresponding angular ,lever 15 which is effective to produce a for-l ward longitudinalv movement on the companion link 21. on the coperating link 29, thus throwing the associated type bar to the printing point. yThe construction is such that the movement' of each lever 23 is -in the/general direction inspection of'Fig. 2 that the system of key levers is substantially col-extensive with the system of type bars and the system ofintermediate' connections between the type bars and key levers, and that the points of connection between the intermediate actu-l ating devices of each type bar and its associated key lever are in the same 4plane so v.that there is no side strain on theparts,
and that the type bar 4swings to the printing point by a pull upon the-associated link 29 which is fore andaft of the machine. This construction provides an easy action devoid of lateral or. side strains `and one which is easy at the start and* radually approaches the printingpostion. This last. may be appreciated by a comparison 'of the positions of the type at a' b c' and d Fig. l with-thel positions of the key vhead at the correspondingp'oints in its depression.
-Each of the "links 13, 21 an'd 29 is preferably made of a two-part linkdetachably connectedto'theparts with which-it is associated. By 'the two-part construction of the links 29,.for'instanc`e, each link ata side of the machinen'iay have its rear end turned atone angle to cofact with the radially disposed type barand may have its-forward 4end connected tov the associated actuating lever which movesin a vertical plane. The twodpart links may thus readily accommodate themselves to the di'erent angular positions of the pa'rt's'i'to which they are lconnected.

In a front-strike typewriting machine,` the combination of a series of upwardly and rearwardly striking type bars, links'that extend longitudinally fore and aft of the machine, levers extending longitudinally fore and aft of the machine, each of said levers being fulcrumed at one end and connected at its opposite end to one of said links, a shiftable frame whiclvcarries said type bars links and levers, a setof sub-levers pivoted to a fixed part of the machine and a second set of links connecting 115 said first mentioned levers and said sub levers, the last mentioned links extending fore andaft of the machine.
