Be it known that l, VViLLnxr/i J. MCCOL- non, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paterson, in the county of Passaic and the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful l'mprovement in Razor Stropping and Grinding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
llly invention relates to that class of machines for use in sharpening or stropping razor blades and the like wherein the blade, held in the machine, is oscillated against the strop as the latter is advanced back and forth so to wipe against the blade-edge, and itconsists in certain improvements in these devices designed especially to facilitate the operation of sharpening` or stropping, render the device adjustable to suit diderent shapes and sizes of blades, make it as substantial, durable, simple and compact in construction as possible and reduce the cost of manufacture.
The accompanying drawing fully illustrates my invention.

C denotes two side plates each formed forked in its lower portion.
R denotes a rod to which the upper ends of the plates C are attached by the screws I which penetrate the plates C and are tapped into the ends of the rod, each having a smooth or plain portion between its threaded partand the head thereof so as to afford a bearing for other parts of the machine.
E is a bail having a suitable eye whereby to attach it to a hook or other support and having its ends journaled on the aforesaid bearings of screws l adjacent the plate C. K is a U-shaped lever structure whose upper end portions are fnlcrumed on said bearings between the end of the rod R and the corresponding end of bail E. plates C are rigidly connected'by the parj allel strop guides T against the ends of which said legs are secured by the screws D. The adjoining faces of these strop guides are substantially cylindrical, and in order that adjustment thereof may be afforded pivotally around axes eccentric with respect to their cylindrical or convex faces one of. the two holes a which are formed in each leg `o of each of the plates C to receive the screws D may be elongated, as shown in Figs. l andS.
In view ofthe foregoing, it will be seen that the parts C, B and T, together with the screws l and D afford a frame in which the lever or lever structure K hangs pendent from its bearings,`` around which also the bail E is preferably pivotally movable.
The lever or lever structure K has in its lower end a grooved portion P affording a socket for the razor blade H, the same being so located that when the blade is in position the 1atter stands between the strop guides T. To actuate the lever K I provide a rocker which (Figs. 3, 6, and 7) comprises the plates M having inwardly projecting studs J, the rollers G journaled on said studs and the trunnions F projecting outwardly from the plates each in a line with and midway between the studs. The trunnions F arejournaled in holes formed in the plates C between the screws I and the strop guides.- Projecting inwardly from each plate M of the rocker is a stud lV received by a slot O in the corresponding leg of the lever K.
Operation: The strop B is arranged to extend over the rollers G of the rocker with its end-portions extending between the strop-guides T. The strop B may be provided at its ends with suitable grips S, and when the machine is attached to a suitable support with the blade H in position and the strop moved back and forth by pulling on it-s ends alternately, the rocker oscillates in the frame (see the broken line in Fig. l.) on its trunnions F so that by the connection between the same and the lever K afforded by the studs W and slots O, said lever is swung back and forth to bring the razor blade against the advancing strop, which finds support upon the round adjoining faces of the strop guides T. By employing the rocker, and further by providing said rocker with the rollers G, the movements of the lever K are accomplished substantially without friction. In view of this and because the said lever is fulcrumed at its upper end-port-ion and has at its lower end-port-ion the blade-holding part thereof, while the rocker is pivoted and also engages the lever-structure between the fulcrum axis of the lever structure and its blade-holding part, the application to the strop of a comparatively slight amount of power to rock the rocker is sufficient to produce a considerable pressure of the blade against the strop, thereby reducing the operating strain exerted on the device and at the same time securing compactness, strength andl simplicity of construction.
It will be understood that by adjusting the convex strop guides the machine can be adapted to various shapes and sizes of blade.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. The combination, with a frame comprising parallel side-plates each forked at one end, a transverse rod disposed between the other ends of said side-plates, spaced parallel transverse strop-guides disposed between the forked ends of the side-plates, and screws securing the side-plates to the ends of the rod and guides, of a U-shaped blade-holding lever depending from and having each of its extremities pivoted on one of the screws securing the side-plates to the rod and having its blade-holding port-ion depending into contiguity to said guides, each extremity of said lever being spaced from the adjacent side-plate, a bail having each end thereof pivoted on one of the last-named screws and fitting between the adjacent extremity of said lever and side-plate, and a strop-actuated leveractu ating rocker fulcrumed in the side-plates` between the rod and guides and operatively engaged with the lever, substantially as described.
2. In a machine for sharpening hollow ground blades, the combination of a frame having attaching means and spaced parallel strop-guides arranged in the frame, said guides being each convex in substantially the same curve as that of the concavity of the blade to be sharpened, each guide being pivotally adjustable on an axis parallel with the other guide, and disposed eccentrically of the convex face of said guide, a. lever fulcrumed in said frame on an axis parallel with the strop-guides and having means to hold a blade in interposed relation to the guides, and a strop-actuated leveractuating member movably arranged in the frame7 the strop being adapted to extend over said member with its ends projecting between the guides, substantially as described.
