HANS JESSEN, OF GLTj'CKSTADT, GERMANY.
LEAF-TURNER.
To, aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANs Jnssnn, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Gliickstadt, Germany, have invented a new and Improved Leaf-Turner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus of novel construction for turning over music sheets, leaves of books, etc., which is reliable in operation and may be readily attached to pianos, music stands and similar devices.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a leaf turner embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a plan, and Fig. 3 a side view.
A suitable support 25 of a piano, music holder etc. is provided with a pair of brackets b, o constituting bearings for a shaft a which is so mounted as to be inclined from the vertical. Upon shaft a is free to turn a plurality of spaced superposed sectorshaped plates 6, each plate carrying a leaf turning arm 0. Some of these arms are shown to be U-shaped so as to be inserted between the music sheets, while others carry clips (Z that engage the lower edges thereof. Beneath plates 6 there is free to turn on shaft a a disk or bearing Z carrying counterweight m. To disk Z is fulcrumed at g eccentric to shaft a a substantially \l-shaped turning lever f having two upwardly extending arms. One of these arms is provided with a yoke h adapted to take a bearing against the lower faces of plates 6 and with a finger 71 adapted to engage the rear edges of said plates. A counterweight is carried by the second lever arm has a tendency to swing the first named arm upward when unobstructed.
In order to turn disk Z upon shaft a, there is provided a finger or foot plate 9 hinged at g to an arm g that projects beneath bracket 6 To plate 9 there is pivoted by eye 7) one end of a laterally inclined link 0 the other end of which is pivoted to a rotatable stud 91 depending from disk Z. This stud is arranged diametrically opposite weight m and is located eccentric to a plane drawn through the axis of shaft a at right angles to hinge 9 so that a dead center is avoided.
If desired the upper bracket 6 may be provided with the foot r of a rest .9 that supports the back of the music.
In the initial position of the parts, coun- Specification of Iletters Patent.

terweight 70 so tilts lever f that its yoke 72 is forced against the bottom of the lowermost sector 6 while its finger i will engage the right edge of such sector. When a sheet is to be turned over, the player depresses plate 9 thereby causing disk Z to turn to the left and take along the lowermost sector 6 through its engagement with finger i of lever f said lever participating in the rotary movement of the disk. The rotation of sector 6 should slightly exceed an arc of 90 so as to carry by its arm 0 the sheet beyond the neutral line and cause the sheet to be completely turned over by gravity. When a sector has thus been swung toward the left, its right edge still slightly overlaps the left edge of the unturned sector located directly above the turned sector. When a sheet has been turned over, plate 9 is released, so that disk Z will be retracted by the action of its counterweight m. During the first part of this return movement, yoke h and finger i will be withdrawn from engagement with the turned over sector, so that weight 70 is free to so tilt lever f that the yoke is raised. Owing to the fact that at this stage of the operation, the succeeding sector will overlie the yoke, the latter will be raised against the bottom of such succeeding sector. As the return movement of the disk is continued, the yoke will glide underneath said sector until at the completion of the movement the finger i will engage the right edge of the sector and the parts are in proper position for the next operation.
I claim:
1. A leaf turner comprising a shaft, a plurality of superposed sector-shaped plates rotatable thereon, leaf-turning arms carried by the plates, a lower disk also rotatable on the shaft beneath the plates, means on the disk for returning the same after a leaf has been turned, a lever pivoted to the disk eccentric to the shaft and having two upwardly extending arms, one of said arms being provided with a weight, while the other arm is provided with a yoke adapted to engage the bottom of a plate and with a finger adapted to engage the edge of said plate.
2. A leaf turner comprising a shaft inclined to the vertical, a plurality of superposed sector-shaped plates rotatable thereon, leaf-turning arms carried by the plates, a lower disk also rotatable on the shaft beneath the plates a lever pivoted to the disk plate and t0 the disk at a point diametrically eccentric to the shaft and having an up- Opposite the counterweight wardly extending arm, means for elevating T said arm into engagement with successive HANS JESSEB plates, a counterweight carried by the disk, Witnesses:
a finger plate mounted on some part or" FRITZ BI'JNTE, the device, and a link pivoted to the finger EMIL HAUPT.
