To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PATRICK P. MILLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baton, in the county of Colfax and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dirt-Receptacles for Grave-Diggers, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to collapsible receptacles adapted to receive earth from an excavation, which after the said eX- cavation has been used for a certain purpose is to be refilled from the earth contained within the receptacle.

The device is primarily intended for use in grave-yards and is adapted to be arranged adjacent a grave so that the earth dug from the grave may be readily replaced and the receptacle being collapsible as well as foldable may be readily transferred from place to place as occasion requires.

WVith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the improvement progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan viewof a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4c is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bottom of the device. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of connecting the sides-and ends.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the bottom of the device. The base 1 comprises a pair of hinge sections designated respectively by the numerals 2 and 8. The base is further provided adjacent its ends with a plurality of depressions or openings 4, the same adapted to receive studs 5 provided upon the side members 6 and the end members 7 of the device. The side members as well as the ends of the structure are preferably paneled and the sides as well as the ends each comprise a pair of hinged sections. The sides are hinged longitudinally, while the ends are hinged centrally and vertically, the ends have their upper edges inclined downwardly and in opposite directions, and the sides when assembled are of a height equaling the lowest point of the pitched upper edges of the ends. The sides and ends are each provided with a plurality of spaced eyes 8, and these eyes are adapted to receive hook members 9 carried upon the ends and sides. One of the sections of each of the ends is provided with a centrally arranged stop member, the same being positioned upon the inner portions of the structure, and these stop members are centrally grooved or depressed upon their upper ends to receive a longitudinally extending bar 10. The bar 10 is adapted to support a canvas cover 11 and the ends of the canvas cover are each provided with longitudinally eX- tending weighted members or bars which sustain the canvas upon the device when the said device is in set up position.

From the above description taken inconnection with the accompanying drawings it will be noted that by manipulating the hooks, either of the sides or the sections of the sides may be swung open, while the side members may be readily removed from the bottom and the sections thereof folded one upon the other, the ends are likewise readily removable from the bottom by withdrawing the pins or dowels from the openings provided in the bottom, and the bottom may have its sections swung one upon the other so as to fold the structure into a small bundle which may be readily transferred. It will be further noted that by forming the sides with the pitched edges which together with the vertically extending stop serves as a means for supporting a bar over which the canvas cover is arranged, the dirt within the receptacle is protected from the elements as readily noted, as the said canvas covering forms what may be termed a roof which will shed water to the opposite sides of the device.

Having thus described the invention what I claim is 1. A receptacle for the purpose set forth comprising a base embodying two hinged members, hinged sides removably connected with the base, hinged ends removably connected with the base and with the sides, said ends having their upper edges substantially V-shaped when assembled, a rod engaging with the apeXes of the ends, said rod adapted to support a canvas covering.

In a receptacle for the purpose set forth, a base comprising a pair of hinged members, the said base being formed with a plurality of openings arranged adjacent its edges, side members comprising a pair of hinged sections, the lower member of each of the hinged sections being provided With dowel pins adapted toengage With'the openings provided adjacent the longitudinal edges of the base, :end members, said end members having their upper edges substantially V-shaped, the end members each comprising a pair of hinged sections Which are hinged in a vertical line terminating at their ap-exes, dowel-pins upon the lower eX-j tremit ies of the end sections and engaging Within the openings provided adjacent the transverse edges of the base, stop members Within the receptacle and arranged acent the central portion of the ends, said members having their upper extremities depressed, a removable rod for engaging the said depressed portions, said rod adapted PATRICK P.
