To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. FISH, a citizen of the United States, residin at Lowville, in the county of Lewis and tate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Taking Out Dents in Milk-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany, ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for taking out dents, creases, etc., in milk cans and other receptacles, and comprises a simple and efiicient apparatus 0 this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central sectional view through my improved device. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View through the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A.designates a plate which is concaved upon its upper surface and adapted to form a support for a can B having a bottom to conform to and contact with said concaved part. A disk C is convexed upon its lower surface and is adapted to rest upon the concaved bottom of the can to which the device is to be applied, and a screw D has its lower end swiveled in a central opening formed in said disk C and its upper end has an operating wheel E fixed thereto. A block F has a threaded opening therein for the reception of said screw and the ends of said block are slotted as at F, and pins H pass through registering apertures in the walls of said slots and upon these the inner ends of the links I are ivotally mounted, their outer ends being plvotally mounted upon the pins J which pass through registering apertures in the walls of the slotted lugs N which project from the inner concaved surfaces 5 of the formers or swage blocks 0. Said blocks 0 have their upper portions tapering as shown and each is of semi-cylindrical ships and hollow and their outer convexed su aces are adapted to conform to. the.wall of the can and their upper tapering portions to the tapering part of the can in which they are to be utilized for the purpose of taking out indentures, creases or other irregularities in the wall of the can.
A second block, designated by letter M,
is threaded upon the screw above the block F and has slotted ends M and the upper surface of said block M is concaved transversely as at Q, for the race tion of the plates R which are convexe upon their ower surfaces and concaved upon their upper surfaces, and each is provided with a transverse slot R which is in registration centrally with the slot M. Link chains T are fastened each at its lower end to an eye W fastened to the inner surface 'of the former blocks 0 and said links are adapted to engage the slots R formed in the plates which areseated in the recesses in the upper surface of the block M, said chains being provided for the purpose of holdin the two former blocks 0 in different ad usted positions according to the size of the can which they are to operate upon in taking out the dents in the wall thereof.
In operation, the can is placed upon theconcaved plate A with the convexed bottom of the canconforming to'the dished upper surface of said plate and the disk which is swiveled to the lower end of the screw is placed within the can and its lower tapering surface conforming to the concaved, bottom of the can. By this arrangement, it will be noted that the shape of the bottom of the can Will be maintained by reason of the disk and plate both conforming to the bottom thereof, thus allowing the bottom Patented July 23, 1912. v
to withstand the necessary pressure which 1 might come upon it in the operations of the apparatus. The former blocks are adjusted to conform to the size of the can by spreading the same in opposite directions by pulling up upon the chains and, after being adjusted properly, the links of the chains are caught in the slots of the plates R, thus maintaining the bottoms in their adjusted positions, after which the operator by turning the hand wheel, may cause the blocks F and M to be raised and the convexed portions of the former blocks be made to be drawn frictionally against the uneven surfaces of the can, thus tending to straighten out any irregularities therein. The former to further assist in straightening out irregu-v larities. After the dents have been removed from the cam-the screw may be turned in the reverse direction and the chains released from their plates and the forming apparatus removed from the can.
What I claim to be new is 1. A device for removing-dents and creases from milk cans, consisting of a disk adapted to rest upon the bottom of the can, a screw swiveled to said disk, means for turning the screw, a block having threaded connection with the screw, expanding members with pivotal link connections between the same and said block, and means for holding the expanding members in different relative positions to conform to different diameters of cans, as set forth.

A device for removing dents and creases from milk cans, consisting of a disk adapted to rest upon the bottom of the can, a screw swiveled to said disk, means for turning the screw, a block having threaded connection with the screw, expanding members with pivotal link connections between the same and said block, a second threaded block upon said screw, and adjustable means connecting the same with said expanding members, as set forth.

A device for removing dents and creases from milk cans, consisting of a disk adapted to rest upon the bottom of the can, a screw swiveled to said disk, means for turning the screw, a block havin threaded connection with the screw, expan ing members with pivotal link connections betweenthe same and said block, a second threaded. block upon said screw, and chains fastened each to one of said expanding members and adapted to adjustably engage said swiveled block, as set forth.
4; A device for removing dents and creases from milk cans, consisting of a disk adapted to rest upon the bottom of the can, a screw swiveled to said disk, means for turning the screw, a block having threaded connection with the screw, expanding members with pivotal link connections between the same and said block, a second threaded block mounted upon said screw and having slotted ends, chains fastened one to each of said expanding members and adapted to engage the slots of said swiveled block to hold the expanding members in adjusted positions, as set forth.

A device for removing dents and creases from milk cans, consisting of a disk adapted to rest upon the bottom of the can, a screw swiveledto said disk, means for turning the screw, a block having threaded connection with the screw, expanding members with pivotal link connections between the same and said block, a second threaded block mounted upon said screw and having slotted ends, slotted plates fastened to the upper surface of the second threaded block and over the slotted ends thereof, and chains fastened one to each of said e'xpanding members and adapted to' engage the slotted plates, as set forth.
6. A device for removing dents and creases from milk cans, consisting of a disk adapted to rest upon the bottom of the can, a screw swiveled to said disk, means for turning the screw, a block having threaded connection with the screw, expanding members with pivotal link connections between the same and said block, a second threaded block mounted upon said screw and having slotted ends, the upper surface of said second threaded block having transverse concaved recesses formed therein, plates convexed upon their under surfaces and engaging said recesses and each slotted in its edge, link chains fastened each to one of said expand ing members and adapted to adjustably ene gage said slotted plates, as set forth.
7. A device for removing dents and creases from milk cans, comprising a plate with its upper surface convexed to conform to the concaved bottom of a can and adapted to rest thereon, a disk adapted to rest upon the bottom of th can, a screw swiveled to said disk, means or turning the screw, a block
