serial No. 677,292.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALFRED ASHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Tube Cleaners, of which the following is a speciication.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for cleaning tubes of boilers.
The invention embodies more particularly a device adapted to be inserted in the boiler tube to cut the scale and other foreign substances from the inner wall of the tube.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a cutter body for connection with a handle and provided with an edge for cutting the scale and a cap pivotally and adjustably mounted on the cutter body to catch and retain the scale which is cut from the inner wall of the tube by the cutter body and aid the action of the cutter body in removing the scale from the wall of the tube.
In the further disclosure of the invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in .which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, parts being broken away to disclose the underlying structure. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I provide a cutter body 10 terminating at one end in a gouging head 11, having an inclined surface 12 and terminating in a cutting edge 13, the other end of the said cutter body 10 being provided with an integral bearing 14 having pivotally connected thereto a socket 15 adapted to threadedly receive a suitable handle 16.
The cutter body 10 is provided with a centrally arranged upwardly extending ear 17 having secured thereto and extending upwardly therefrom a flat spring 18 and mounted to swing upon the ear 17 and partially inclosing the same is a cap 19, the under side of the said cap being engaged by the free end of the spring 18. Removably secured to the cutter body 10 adjacent the point of connection of the cutter body with the socket 15 is a stop plate 20 adapted to be engaged by the innerend of the cap 19 to limit thepivo-tal movement of the cap, an adjusting screw 21 being mounted to extend through the cap cutter body 10 for adjusting the cap relatively to the cutter body. The enlargedI or head end of the cap 19 is provided on the outer side with teeth 22 and adjacent the outer teeth on the head end of the cap,`
the mentioned cap is provided with cut away portions 23 as shown in the views.
In the use of the device the cutter body 10 and the parts mounted thereon are inserted in the boiler tube and by moving the device to and fro within the tube the cutting edge 13 of the gouging head 11 will cut into the scale formed on the inner surface of the tube and remove the same therefrom, the scale being received within the cap 19 so that when the device is removed from the boiler tube the scale that is cut from the inner surface of the tube will be also removed. By pivotally mounting the cap 19 upon the cutter body 10 and forming the teeth 22 upon the cap, the device will be prevented from becoming stuck in the boiler tube and the teeth 22 being provided with cutting edges will aid in removing the scale from the tube, the adjustment of the cap 19 relatively to the cutter body 10 being provided to insure the use of my dev1ce 1n connection with tubes having different 1nternal diameters.
In a device of the class described, the combination with a cutter body, of a cap mounted to swing on the said cutter body, a spring secured to the cutter body and having the free end thereof engaging the 19 and engage the ALFRED ASHTON.
under side of the cap, adjaoent the forward end thereof, a stop plate extending for- .vvardly from the rear end of the said Cutter body and adapted to be engaged by the said cap to limit the swinging movement thereof, and an adjusting sorevv mounted on the said cutter body and slidably engaged by the said cap for adjusting the swinging Witnesses:
