Be it known that I, JAooB- S, Auriga citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have inventedv to reduce the wear of the parts, and to prevent breaking of the lower pivot.
'A further object ot' my invention is to construct the outer end of the' boom so that it will be of greater strength than heretofore, and will provide means for properly guiding the rope which passes around the outer boom sheave.

Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, in the present instance, A is a base having sills a of any form desired, and mounted-on the sills is the step casting B forming a bearing for the foot block C to which the mast D is secured. On the upper end of the mast is a gudgeon pin E, which passes through eyes in plates f, secured to the struts F, forming the frame of the derrlck. The boom G is pivotally mounted on the foot block C.
The foot block *step B is made, as clearly shown in Figs. 2, 5 and 12, and has a central opening I), in which rests the gudgeon or plvot head a, which depends from the foot block 0. Projecting upward from the center of the opening is a tapered flange b, which surrounds the central opening 17 for the passage of the re es leading to and from the sheaves H. T ese sheaves are mounted on a pin it carried by brackets 71. depending from the step B. In the annular space surrounding the flange b of the step B is a bearing ring 1:, and the head 0' of the udgeon a rests directly upon this ring. P ates b, b are secured to the step and extend over the flancged head fitting around the neck of the gu eon o, as illustrated in Fig. 2.- These p ates allow the gudgeon to move freely on its bearing'ring, yet prevent it from being withdrawn from the step.

The foot block has a central opening 0 in line with the opening I), for the passage of the ropes. the gudgeon c is curved, as clearly shown in Fig. 8; the curve running parallel with a line at right angles to'the pivot of the boom. The foot block rests upon the ring In at each side of the center, as illustrated at m, Fig. 8, and at w, m, Fi 7, and as the foot block rocksrwhen the 00m is carrying a load, it
will roll on the ring, the bearing being always at each side of the center line; thus distributing the load on each side of the center, instead of concentrating the load at ghe forward end of the gudgeon, as heretoore.
When the load was concentrated at a single point at the forward end of the gudgeon, the pressure was so great as to cause the head of the gudgeon to crack,
breaking pieces from the head and making the bearing imperfect. I find that by making the head in the form of arocker, the
load is carried by the gudgeon at each side of the-center,'1eaving the forward end practically free from the dead weight of the boom and its load.

This pivot pin passes through plates n inserted ln the side of the boom, as illustrated in Fig-11. a In order. to strengthen the end of the boom and to provide means for suspending the block formin part of the tackle, and also to form gui es for the rope passing around the sheave N, I provide four angle e bars M, M; arranging two bars M on t upper surface of the boom and two bars M on the lower surface, thereof. The bars'of both sets are spaced apart, as clearly shown in Fi 11, and, as they extend from the end 0 the boom past the sheave end, they act as guides for the rope assing' around said sheave. I claim:
1. The combination in a derrick, of a foot block step having a recess therein, a foot block having a gudgeon extending into the recess, a mast secured to the foot block, a boom pivoted to the 'foot block, the lower end of the gudgeon being curved to form a rocker, the curve lyingin-the plane of oscillation of the boom.
2. The combination in a derrick having a mast andboom, of a step, said step having a recess,,a ring mounted within the recess,
