To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. CALKINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Las Cascadas, Canal Zone, Panama, have invented a new and Improved Oil- Swab Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to improvements in the structure disclosed in application for patent, Serial Number (523,369, for oil swab holders, filed by me under date of A ril 26, 1911, in the United States Patent flice, to which cross reference is here made.
The invention more particularly relates to means for locking the sections of the holder in mutual relation and the parts of the cover thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a pictorial view showing a swab holder constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention mounted between the component cylinders of an air compressor; Fig. 2 is a top view of a holder constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention, the cover sections for the holder being shown in partly spread position and the piston rod of an engine being shown in conjunction therewith and in section, the section being taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the structure shown in Fig. 2, the section being taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a side view of a holder constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention.
As shown in the drawings, the body of the holder is constructed in two half-sections 99, the sections being pivotally connected. by a hinge bolt 10, and held in closed position by a screw 11 having a wing nut 12. Perforations are suitably provided in lugs 13 and 14 extending from each of the sections 9, to receive the screw 11. The perforation in the In 13 is enlarged to freely pass the shank o the screw 11, while the perforation in the lug 13 is adapted to provide threads to register with the threads of the screw 11. When the screw 11 is passed through the lug 13 and engages the lug 14, the two lugs and the sections 9, 9 connected therewith, may be drawn closely together,
closing the parting of said sections. Each of the lugs 13 and 14 is provided with a groove, the .grooves 15, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, being provided to receive the hook-like flange 16 formed on each of the cover-sections 17 17. The sections 17, 17 are pivotally held by the hinge bolt 10 and are provided each with a semicircular recess 18 formed concentric with and adapted to completely envelop the piston rod A. When the cover sections 17, 17 are adjusted to close the cup formed by the sections 9, 9, the hook flanges 16 are seated within the grooves 15 formed in the lugs 13 and 14. Then when the screw 11 is manipulated, the cover sections 17 17 are drawn together and the hook flanges 16 are locked in the grooves 15. The above is the condition in which the holder is inoperatively disposed on the rod A.
To supply the swab B, which is placed within the cup formed by the sections 9, 9, with oil during service thereof, each cover section is furnished with a perforation. 19. The perforations 19 are each covered by a swinging plate 20, each of which plates is pivotally mounted by means of a pivot 21 to its cover section 17, and each is provided with an upturned lug 22, whereby it may be rotated upon the pivot. With the construction thus arranged, the method followed in adjusting it upon the piston rod A, is as follows: The screw 11 is withdrawn from engagement with the lug 14, and the sections 9, 9 are then swung on the hinge bolt 10, sufiiciently to permit the rod A to pass therebetween. The sections 9, 9 are then closed and the screw 11 is adjusted. Prior to setting up the screw 11 to fully close the sections each with the other, the cover sections 17, 17 are spread and the body of the cup is packed with waste or other suitable acking material. This packing is previousl y saturated with oil to cause it to conform more readily to the shape required. The packing having been satisfactorily adjusted within the cup, the cover sections 17, 17 are drawn together. These cover sections are constructed from any suitable sheet or plate metal having sufficient resiliency to permit the ends of the cover sections to be lifted to be passed over the lugs 13 and 14. \Vhen the flanges 16 are brought together, they are dropped between the lugs 13 and 14, to aline with the rooves 15. Thereafter, the screw 11 is manipulated by using the wing nut 12,
and the sections 9, 9 and 17, 17 are drawn closely together and in proper relation to the rod A. Oil may then be supplied to the swab B held within the cup, by pouring the same through the perforations 19, '19.
When it is deemed necessary to replace the swab B, thescrew 11 is manipulated, to permit the sections 9, 9 to be held spread apart without being removed from the rod A, vbut suflicient to permit the flanges 16,16 to be lifted from between said lugs, then the cover sections 17, 17 may be separated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent:
1. A holder such as described, having body sections pivotally connected, each of said sections having a fastening lug, and said In s each having a groove formed there in, and a plurality of cover sections pivotally connected and each having a hook member extended therefrom, to register with the grooves in said lugs.
2. In a holder such as described, a cup formed in two sections pivotally connected, each of said sections having a fastening lug and said lugs having each a refgistering recess in the meeting faces thereo a twwpart cover for said cup pivotally mounted thereon, each part of said cover having a pendant projection to register with the said recesses in said lugs, and means for drawing said lugs together.
