EXPANSION-J OIN T FOR CON CRETE PAVEMENTS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN F. MCCARTHY, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansion- Joints for Concrete Pavements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the art of laying concrete pavements, and has for its object the provision of an improved means for allowing for the expansion and contraction of the pavements, and consists of the provision of a strip of sheet metal bent into a U in cross-section and its edges formed with lateral flanges having lugs or projections that engage the concrete to hold the flanges inengagement with the pavement on the two sidesof the joint.
My invention will be described in detail shape hereinafter, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which adapted to seat on the top of the concrete Figure 1 is a top plan view of a fragment of a concrete pavement showing my improved joint inposition; Fig. 2, a cr0sssection of the pavement and joint; and Fig. 3, a view in side elevation of my improve-d joint.

After the joint is completed the space between the sides 2 of the U-shaped portion may be filled with pitch or asphaltum, indicated at 5, to provide for expansion and contract-ion of thepavement.
When in use it flanges 3 will protect the edges of the pavement abutting the U-shaped portion and prevent it from chipping or breaking, and the U-shaped portion will open and close when the pavement contracts or expands because of changes of temperature, the pitch or asphaltum filling the space between the sides 2 when the joint member opens because of contraction of the pavement, butbecause of pavement on the two sides of the its viscosity permitting the pavement to expand without endangering its integrity.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is A joint member for concrete pavements comprlsing a strip of sheet-metal bent in a U shape in cross-section, laterally-extending flanges on the upper edges of said U-shaped portion, and downwardly-extending anchoring lugs. or projections on said flanges, substantially as shown and described.
