T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN GLossINGnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cases for Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention relates to cases for smoking pipes and has for its objects to provide a case that is not only simple and durable in construction, but one that may be manufactured and sold at small cost.

Heretofore cases of this character have generally been made either in whole or in part of leather, and cases of this description are not only difficult to manufacture but they are very expensive as compared to the case forming the subject matter of the present invention.

According to this invent-ion the case is made entirely of sheet metal stamped to proper form and having a fabric or other soft lining, as is usual in smoking pipe cases. By making the case entirely of sheet metal, the two sections of which the case is formed are not only more rigid in construction, but the sheet metal forming the sections is susceptible of a wide range of ornamentation inasmuch as the metal may be readily lithographed in suitable designs or colors to suit the taste.

Briefly and generally stated, the invention comprises a case for smoking pipes, comprising two substantially identical sheet metal sections stamped or molded to proper form, the edges of the sheet metal sections being turned inwardly to embrace and retain the edges of the lining material for the sections, and also to lend stifiness and rigidity to the structure, the said sections being hinged together atthe bowl-receiving and stem-receiving portions of the case respectively, and further provided with a suitable catch to retain the sections in closed condition.

In order to enable others to fully understand and construct the invention I will now proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being had for this purpose to the ac companying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the pipe case constructed according to the invention. In the annexed drawings the reference numerals 1 and 2 designate the two sheet metal sections of the case, such sections being formed entirely of sheet metal stamped to proper shape to provide a pipe bowl-receiving portion 3, and a stem-receiving portion 4, the sections being substantially identical in form. By making the sections of sheet metal the outer surfaces thereof may be readily lithographed to impart thereto any desired design or advertising matter.

Each of the sections 1 and 2 is offset laterally around its marginal edge to provide an outstanding rim 5, which construction lends stiffness and rigidity to the structure, and the marginal edges 6 of the off-set portions of the sections are turned or folded inwardly and pressed firmly against the inner walls of the rims 5, to provide rim-walls of double thickness at the edges of the sections. Each section is provided with a fabric or other lining 7, which is preferably glued or cemented to the inner walls of the sections, and the marginal edges of the lining material are securely clamped between the turned over portions or edges 6 and the rims 5, of the sections, whereby the lining material is not only firmly held in place but is prevented from fraying out and, furthermore, the structure described gives a neat appearance to the finished article.

The sections 1 and 2 are each provided respectively at the bowl-receiving and stemreceiving portions thereof, with hinge-receiving flattened portions 8 and 9, which flattened portions are arranged in the same plane sothat the pintles of the hinges, presently to be described, will be in alinement, thus enabling the sections to be readily and completely opened. Each of the sheet metal sections at the points 8 and 9, is provided respectively with tongues 10 and 11, said tongues being formed integral with the sections and bent to form suitable eyes to receive the pintles 12, of the hinges. The sections are further provided with a suitable clasp or latch to retain the sections in closed position, said latch consisting of a spring clip 13 riveted or otherwise secured to the marginal edge of one ofthe sections, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4, and having a lip 14, adapted to engage a depression 15 formed in the outstanding rim 5, of the adjacent section. The said clip is further provided with an outstanding portion 1.6, adapted to be engaged by the finger to release the lip from engagement with the depression referred to when it is desired to release the catch.

It has been demonstrated that pipe cases constructed in accordance with the present invention are not only strong and durable in construction, but they may be made at a very low cost, as compared to cases as heretofore constructed, and, furthermore, they are susceptible to a wide variety of designs or ornamentation,

WVhat I claim is:

As a new article of manufacture, a case for smoking pipes, comprising two identically shaped and relatively movable sect-ions formed Wholly of sheet metal, each having a pipe bowl-receiving portion and a stemreceiving portion, and each section provided with an outstanding marginal rim offset laterally from its body, and extending entirely around the same, the edges of the metal of the sections being bent or folded inwardly against the said offset rims to provide continuous walls of double thickness, a lining for each section, the edges of which are clamped by the said inwardly folded portions, hinges connecting the said sections at the bowl-receiving and stem-receiving portions respectively, and a clasp for locking the sections in closed position.
