FRUIT-JAR HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES SOHAUM- none, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olalla, in the county of Kitsap and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to holders for fruit ars.

The object of this invention is to provide a fruit jar holder of simple and inexpensive construction that will hold a glass fruit jar and protect the same from breakage and by which the ar may be manipulated while being filled, or the contents treated.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a jar holder having a body formed from a fiat sheet of material, which is capable of being packed for shipment in knockdown condition and which may be readily assembled at place of sale or use.

The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an expanded or face view of a blank from which the jar-holder embodying my invention is formed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of Fig; 2.

Referring to Fig. 1 the reference numeral 1 designates the body of my improved fruit jar holder which may be formed from a single blank of sheet metal. Spaced apertures 2 may be provided therein from which the material is left attached along its upper 'edge and folded upwardly to afford apertured ears 3, 3 for attachment with a bail 4. Apertures 5 may be desirably provided in the body of the holder for the access of liquids freely about the contained jar, as will presently be explained.

brought into vertical alinement by suitably bending the body to receive a wire pintle 12 to form an interfitting knuckle connection. Said bail 4 is provided with a hooked end 15 adapted for engagement in a hole 16 in the ear 3 and its opposite end is provided with an offset 17 for engagement in a hole 14 of the ear 3 and is extended downwardly at 18 for a distance. Said ear 3 is provided with inwardly protruding flanges 13 at each side thereof and below the hole 14 which are adapted to interfere and limit the movement of the bail in either direction of its vibrations insuring that it will remain in an upwardly inclined position when at rest and sufiiciently removed at one side to afiord ready access to the jar opening for filling the latter, as best shown in Fig. 2.

metal and substantially in the condition I illustrated in Fig. -1. Said blanks may be packed and crated at the place of manufacture in large numbers together with the bails and pintles therefor and will then occupy relatively but little space.

When it is desired to assemble the holder in operative condition, the body is bent and secured as previously described to form said body in a circular configuration having vertical walls. The pintle pin 12 is inserted within the openings 11 therefor to secure the body in operative condition and the respective ends of the bail are inserted within the holes 14 and 16 by suitably bending same. The tabs 7 may thereupon be bent inwardly in horizontal directions along the score lines 8 to form the bottom rest for the contained jar.

A jar retained in said holder may be handled with much greater ease and lessened danger of breakage than with any other method known to me, especially in connection with its use in canning by steaming or other processes wherein the jars are filled of sale or use and thus permit of great economy in transportation charges. Another ad- Vantage residing in my invention is its simplicity and relative cheapness which would permlt manufacturers of glass fruit jars to pack each jar in a separate holder, as described, in the original crate for shipmentand add the nominal price therefor to the goods. The jars may thus be additionally protected against injury in shipment and could be more easily handled by the retail merchant and would be highly appreciated by the consumer.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 01' the United States, is-

A portable jar holder formed of a single piece of sheet metal bent to circular form and provided with openings therein, the

ears struck out from the blank body and bent upwardly in a vertical plane, one of said ears provided with flanges, and a bail adapted to be secured in said ears and limited in its movement by said flanges.
