Be it known that I, Luwrs S. Rowe, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of Santa Barbara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Paint-Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This inventionl eomprehends certain new and useful improvements in paint brushes, and its primary object is to provide a brush of such a naturethat the head maybe easily and ,quickly removed from its socket and anotherl one substituted therein. j

This invention also has for its object a simple brush of this character provided with means for preventing' paint soiling the handle.

Wit-h these and other objects in view, as will be more fully explained as t-he description proceeds the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts that I shall hereinafter more fully describe iand claim.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the` following description and accompanying drawings in which A Figures 1 and 2 are elevations of my improved brush. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the plane of line 3-3 in Fig. 1, the handle being shown in elevation. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4--4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a detail View of a brush head. j

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated/in the accompanying drawing by like reference characters. j

Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a hollow sleeve or socket preferably rectangular in cross-section and open at both ends. In one end is fitted a handle 2 and in the other a head 3 is removably secured. A. gutter or basin 4 encircles the handle engaging end of said socket and is formed integral therewith. This basin catches the paint which may run down from head 3 when the brush is held vertical, thus preventing the hands of the user being soiled. A

-The front wall of the socket 1 is in two sections designated 6 and 7. Section 6 adjacent the inner end of the socket, isformed integral therewith and has secured to its outer edge, by hinges 5, section 7. This section acts as a door for closing or opening thehead engaging end of socket 1 to permit the insertion or removal of a brush head. A locking bar 9 is pivotally mounted intermediate of its ends, by pivot 10 to section 7. The ends of the bar project beyond the side edges of door 7 and engage hooks 11, carried by the side walls of the socket. It will be seen that this locking mechanism is very simple and efficient, securely holdin hinged portion 7 of the front wall 1n its closed position to prevent any lateral movement of the head 3. This brush-head comprises as shown in Fig. 5 aband 12 binding together one end of fibers or bristles 13. This band forms a rectangular sleeve, shaped to tit in the socket 1. To prevent longitudinal movement of the brush-head when positioned in the socket I provide the band 12 with a plurality of recesses 14: adapted to receive spurs 15 struck inward from the outer edges of the socket walls.

When the operator desires to remove av brush-head he turns the bar 9 out of engagement with the catches 11, swings ,the section 7 away from the sidewalls of the socket and withdraws the head.

From t-he foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be seen that I have provided a brush of simple, durable and eiicient construction, whereby brush heads of different sizes may be used withthe same holder, or a worn-out brush head be easily replaced by a new one.

These brushes are to be sold in sets, six or twelve brush-heads with one handle and socket, thereby greatly reducing the cost of a paintersoutt.

Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is:-
