proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in? the details of construction hereinafter de-. scribed and claimed, it being understood? that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be madef within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 and 2 designate the front and rear axles respectively of the running gear, the front wheels of the vehicle being shown at 3 and therear wheels at 4. A reach 5 is pivotally mounted, at its front end, upon the king pin 6 and is slidably mounted, adjacent its rear end, between the axle 2 and the bolster 7 thereon. Hounds 8 converge forwardly from the rear axle and are connected, at their front ends, by upper and lower plates 9 having a space 10 therebe tween and between the hounds in which the reach 5 is mounted to slide. That portion of the reach between the plates 9 is formed with a longitudinal slot 11 and extending through this slot is a stop pin 12 seated at its ends within the plates 9. An opening 13 isformed in each plate 9 at a point remote from the pin 12 and another opening 14 is formed in the reach 5 at a point back of and spaced from the slot 11. The openings 13 and 14: are so positioned that, when the reach 5 is drawn forward relative to the hounds 8 and the rear axle 2, the opening 14 is brought into register with the opening 13 and a locking pin 15 can thus be inserted into the opening and will serve to hold the reach against movement relative to the hounds. This pin 15 may be connected to the pin 12 by means of a chain 16 or any other suitable flexible connection. A supporting beam 17 is bolted or otherwise socured at its center upon the reach 5 and extends transversely of the reach. Those portions of the beam 17 extending over the hounds are provided with anti-friction rollers 18 adapted to bear on the hounds. Links 19 are suspended loosely from eyes 20 adjacent the ends of the beam 17 and the lower ends of the links are pivotally connected, as by means of eye bolts 21, to the end portions of a brake beam 22. This beam is thus suspended from the beam 17 and is capable of swinging relative thereto. A brake shoe 23 is carried by each end portion of the brake beam 22 and is adapted, when the beam is swung rearwardly, to contact with the rim of the wheel located back of the shoe. Pulleys 24: are connected to the rear end portion of the reach 5 at opposite sides thereof and in rear of the. axle 2, and another pulley 25 is connected to the middle portion of the rear face of the axle 2. A cable 26 or other flexible element is fastened at its ends to the beam 22 at opposite sides of the reach 5,
as shown at 27, and this cable extends partly around the pulleys 24: and 25, as shown particularly in Fig. 1.
It will be seen that the draft tongue 28 is connected to the front axle in the usual manner and is mounted to swing upwardly and downwardly upon a pivot bolt 29. A bolster 30 is pivotally mounted on the front axle and is preferably provided, upon its upper face, witha series of supporting rollers 31 on which the body 32 of the vehicle is adapted to rest. Standards 33 are also pref-- erably extended upwardly from the ends of the bolster 30 and carry rollers 34 adapted to contact with the sides of the wagon body. Thus it will be seen that said body is capable of moving freely relative to the front bolster but, as it rests upon the rear bolster it will not move relative thereto.
It will be understood that under normal conditions the pin 15 is removed from the openings 13 and 14. Thus it will be seen that when tongue 24 is pulled forward by the draft animals, the reach 5 will also be pulled forward and the rear end wall of slot ll-will bear against the pin 12. Pulley Zl will thus be moved toward the pulley 25, cable 26 will be held slack, and the brake beam 22 will hang downwardly under the beam 17. During the movement of the vehicle along a downgrade, the body 32 will travel downwardly and forwardly upon the rollers 31 and the wheels 4 will thus advance toward the wheels 3. During this movement the hounds 8 and the rear axle 2 will travel forwardly relative to the reach and the pulley will thus be moved away from the pulley 24 and will pull upon the cable 96. Said cable will, in turn, pull rearwardly on the beam 22 and cause its brake shoes 23 to engage and bind upon the rims of the rear wheels 4(. Should it be desired to prevent the application of the brake in this manner, or should it be desired to back the wagon, the pin 15 can be inserted in the registering openings 13 and 14: in the manner hereinbefore described.
lVhat is claimed is 1. In an automatic wagon brake, the combination with front and rear axles, spaced hounds extending forwardly from the rear axle, and upper and lower connecting plates secured thereto, of a reach pivotally connected to the front axle and mounted to slide between the hounds and said plates, a beam secured to the reach, a brake beam suspended therefrom and mounted to swing relative thereto, brake shoes carried by the brake beam, pulleys carried by the side portion of the reach adjacent its rear end, a pulley located below the reach and connected to the rear axle, and a flexible element secured at its ends to the brake beam and extending into engagement with the pulleys on the reach, that portion of the connection between said pulleys being in engagement with the pulley on the rear axle.
2. In an automatic wagon brake, the combination with front and rear axles, spaced hounds extending forwardly from the rear axle, and upper and lower connecting plates secured thereto, of a reach pivotally connected to the front axle and mounted to slide between the hounds and said plates, a beam secured to the reach, a brake beam suspended therefrom and mounted to swing relative thereto, brake shoes carried by the brake beam, pulleys carried by the side portion of the reach adjacent its rear end, a pulley located below the reach and connected to the rear axle, a flexible element secured at its ends to the brake beam and extending into engagement with the pulleys on the reach, that portion of the connection between said pulleys being in engagement with the pulley on the rear axle, a stop pin extending through the plates, there being a longitudinal slot in the reach through which said pin extends, openings within the plates and reach and adapted to register when the brake shoes are in inactive positions, and a locking pin insertible into the registering openings to hold the reach against move ment relative to the hounds and plat-cs.
3. In an automatic wagon brake, the combination with front and rear axles, spaced hounds extending forwardly from the rear axle, and upper and lower connecting plates secured thereto, of a reach pivotally connected to the front axle and mounted to slide between the hounds and said plates, a beam secured to the reach, a brake beam suspended therefrom and mounted to swing relative thereto, brake shoes carried by the brake beam, pulleys carried by the side portion of the reach adjacent its rear end, a pulley located below the reach and connected to the rear axle, a flexible element secured at its ends to the brake beam and extending into engagement with the pulleys on the reach, that portion of the connection between said pulleys being in engagement with the pulley on the rear axle, a stop pin extending through the plates, there being a longitudinal slotin the reach through which said pin extends, openings in the plates and reach and adapted to register when the brake shoes are in inactive positions, a locking pin insertible into the registering openings to hold the reach againstmovement relative to the hounds and plates, and anti. friction body supporting devices mounted above the front axle.
