NAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented July 23, 1912.
Application filed Apri110 .I1911. Serial No. 620,061.
To add whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAM 'I. GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradford, in the county of McKean and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nails, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in nails and more particularly to a wire nail or other nails of a thin type and my object is to provide a nail of this character which may be easily applied to any kind of wood, hard, soft, thin, or thick, without first drilling holes for the same and with no liability of splitting the wood or bending the nail.
A further object is to provide a nail having a sharpened edge, instead of the usual point, formed at one end thereof by beveling the same on opposite sides.
A still further object is to provide a nail of this character having a round stem and a head, said head having parallel flattened faces at right angles to the edge formed at the end of said nail.
A still further object is to provide a nail of this character which may be easily cut from a wire blank, the re'e'ntrant angle formed in said blank by the cutting of the chisel point for one nail being adapted to be used to form the head of the succeeding nail.
A still further object is to provide a nail which may be cheaply manufactured, thereby sold to the general public at practically no increase in cost, and one which is extremely effective in use.
WVith these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nail. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of a slightly modified form of nail. Fig. 4 is a side elevation showing the form of nail as cut from a wire blank, and, Fig. 5 is a top plan view showing a head which may be formed on the nail in the form shown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6
. is a top plan view of the form of nail shown in Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a nail cut from a wire blank and of any desired length and diameter, the
upper end of which is upset in any preferred .manner to form the usual head 2. The opposite end of said nail is beveled, as at 3, at diametrically opposite points on the periphery of the nail 1 to form the chisel point vor driving edge 4.
In manufacturing a nail of this character, the end thereof may be beveled by grinding the same, but I do not wish to limit myself to this manner of beveling the end of a nail, and to this extent, I wish to state that the same may be cut with the beveled ends from a wire blank. Such a nail, is disclosed in my drawing in Fig. 4, and it will be seen that in cutting nails of this character, a V- shapecl recess 5 will be formed in the upper end of each succeeding nail. By flattening out the portions of the nail which form the substantially V-shaped recess, a head 6 will be formed, the ends of which are convex, as shown at 7, and the sides thereof flattened at substantially right angles to the driving edge 4 thereof. By forming the nails from a blank in this manner, the same'may be made cheaply with little or no ditficulty in forming the chisel point and the head for the nail.
As shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have also shown a modified form in which the head of the nail is provided with parallel flattened faces which are extended at right angles to the driving edge of the nail. By providing a nail with a head designed, as shown in this modified form, the same may be driven into soft or hard woods with no liability of tearing the surface of the wood away.
It will be understood that the nails upon which my improvements are adapted to be. applied are such nails as are used in finishing, or applying veneer, fine moldings and the like to a structure. Heretofore, such moldings and the like have been applied by means of a nail having the ordinary point thereon and in numerous cases, the wood has become split, but with a nail such as I have provided, no such chance of splitting the wood is possible, as the edge thereof is driven across the grain of the wood, and furthermore, there will be no chance of the nail bending upon striking another grain or the like in the wood. Furthermore, it will be seen that by providing the head of the nail with parallel flattened faces at right angles to the driving edge thereof, and by entering the driving edge across the grain, said head will enter the surface of the wood, into which said nail is being driven, with the grain and without tearing away the wood from said surface.
It is a well known fact that when working with delicate and fancy woods, such as are used in interior decorating and the like, the carpenter usually drills holes through the wood previous to entering the nails therein, which precaution avoids the splitting of the wood and the bending of the nail, but with the use of nails embodying my improvements, such drilling of holes is entirely unnecessary, as the peculiar formation of the head and driving edge thereof will eliminate any danger of the same splitting the wood. Thus, it will be seen that with the use of a nail such as I have invented, considerable time and labor will be saved, and as these nails may be manufactured at little or no increase in cost over the nails ordinarily used, the same may be sold to the general public at practically no additional cost.
What I claim is As an article of manufacture, a round wire nail cut from a blank to provide an oppositely beveled lower end thereon, said beveled portions tapering in width from their upper to their lower ends, and a head at the opposite end thereof formed from that portion of the blank remaining after the beveled end of the preceding nail has been cut therefrom, said head being correspondingly tapered in width toward the ends thereof and having said ends conveXed.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SAM T. GRAHAM.
