The object of my invention is to provide ribbon feeding mechanism for that class of typewriting machines known as front strike machines in which the ribbon is fed step by step noon each actuation of the type bars and in whichfthe ribbon is moved upon each operation of a type bar to the printing point to receive the type head impact.
My invention is furthermore applicable to a typewriting machine in which the platen is shifted to change the case of'the type and for which purpose I have provided an improved means whereby, upon changing the printing case, the ribbon will be shifted to a. ditt'erent initial point so that upon actuation of the type bars, the ribbon will always be brought to the proper printing position.
In a machine involving my invention is embodied a pair of ribbon spools, one at each side of the. machine. and carrying individual feed devices suitably connected to and actuated by the type bar actuating mechanism. Relating to this portion of the machine, my invention comprehends an improved means whereby the reversal of the direction of feed of the ribbon is brought about consisting in a suitable connection between the individual ribbon feed devices, by which only one of said devices will operate at a time and through which one of said feeding devices is thrown out while the other is thrown into operation.
