Application filed June 28, 1811. Serial No. 635,747.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED L. GLOVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Revere, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Office-Rosters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to office rosters or similar devices in which lists of names or like items which are subject to change are displayed.
In modern use this class of device has become very generally employed and, particuthe use in large office buildings the possibility of keeping such a roster correctly posted is of the utmost importance. One of the great diificulties in keeping such a roster corrected to date lies in the trouble involved in substituting the elements which bear the names.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device of cheap and simple construction in which the unit elements may be quickly and easily T 0 this end, therefore, the invention contemplates a structure in which unitary strips are employed and so mounted as to be capable of easy and immediate engagement by the fingers, while ordinarily lying perfectly flush and uniform with regard to each other. The fundamental principle involved is the supporting of a plurality of removable resilient strips in such a way as to permit their relative depression to afiord possibility of engagement.
The construction and use of the invention will be more fully described in the specification which follows. In that specification and in the drawings which form a part of it there is described and shown a particular form of construction which is found to be especially Well adapted to practical use.
Throughout specification and drawings like reference numerals are employed to in dicate corresponding parts and in the drawings 2-- of a roster with the case door open. Fig. 2 a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a detail of one of the spring unit strips, Fig. 4 a sectional longitudinal section on the line 4-4, Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 a view of the lower part of the frame Figure 1 is a view showing the method of engaging a strip.
placed and replaced.
The device is. preferably constructed as acase comprising a back 1 surrounded by side strips 2 to which is swung a door frame 3 by hinges 4. mounted on the backing 1 are small vertical metal channel strips 5, strips 6 mitered thereto and held in place by blocks 7 and having a central vertical channel strip 8. Upon the side strips 5 are mounted flanges 11 forming vertical grooves on each side of the frame. It will, therefore,
central strip 8 spaces 9.
10 are unit. strips which are preferably made of ordinaryv spring steel stock cut off at suitable length to fit horizontally between the flanges 11. These strips are preferably enameled black or some such suitable color and on them is'placed the desired informa-- tion, as for example the names and room numbers of the occupants of oflice buildings.
When it is desired to fill a roster the strips are prepared with the proper names and by slightly bending each strip 10 the whole vertical length of the roster is filled up with the ends of the strips 10 engaged beneath the flanges 11. The roster in Fig. 1 is not shown completely filled. This, however, is merely done to expose part of the frame and in actual use the roster completely filled so as to present a complete surface concealing the structural part of the device. If there are insufficient names upon the roster to do this blank strips are put in in the usual manner WVhen now it is desired to remove oneof the strips and replace it with another one the strips on Within the side strips 2 and be seen that i there are left between the strips 5 and the would always be each side of the one to be removed are depressed by thumb and forefinger, as indicated in Fig. 5. This exposes the edge of the strip to be removed which may be then grasped and pulled upon. This will bend the strip sufficiently to shorten it and disengage it from the flanges 11. A similar result may be obtained by pressing upon the strip to be removed at one side of the center bar 8. This depression upon one side wil cause a corresponding elevation of the strip on the opposite side of the center bar 8 and the strip may be then engaged as above described.
Various modifications may be made in the construction and use of the invention, all
posed with their ends within said channels 0 and depressible within said spaces. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED L. GLOVER.
