PRINTING DEVICE.
1,033,073. original application led August Specification of Letters Patent. 23, 1909, Serial No. 514,203.
` Patented July 16, 1912. Divided and this application filed February 4, 1911. Serial No. 606,523.
T o all whom it may concern:
Be it lrnown that I, J noon RANZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Printing Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, -such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view provement; Fig. Q is a on the line a-a of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a sectional view talren on a plane passing through the centerof the improved device.
This application is a division of my copending application Serial No. 514,203, filed August '23, 1909.
My invention relates to a printing machine, and the object of my present improvement is to provide a simple and ethcient form of printing surface.
The improvement is shown in my former case as applied to a machine for printing on bottles, and is especially adapted for such purpose, but it is clear that it may be used in connection with many other and dierent printing devices. A
My invention consists, therefore, in cer tain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the supporting shaft, having an operating gear 2 attached at one end, sai shaft being threaded at its opposite end 3, for the reception of a nut 4.
Mounted on the shaft 1 is a cylinder 5,
vhicli is provided with a series of longitudinal grooves or section, arranged around the periphery thereof.
Extending between the cylinder 5 and the gear 2 is a series of split washers 7 which provide means for positioning the cylinder properly on the shaft 1.
Carried by the center portion of the cylinder is a segmental plate 8 of thin sheet metal, and carried thereby is a segmental of my im- Copies of this patent may be obtained for sectional view takenV slots 6 of T-shape, in cross' five cents each, by addressingthc member9 of rubber or analogous material, upon the outer surface of which is placed a mark or type face of the printed matter which is to be applied to the bottles or other articles desired to be printed.
10 designates segmental clamping rings which clamp over either end of the plate 8, and passing through said rings and into blocks or nuts 11, which occupy the slots 6, are set screws 12. This construction permits the printing member 9 to be adjusted longitudinally and circumferentially upon the cylinder 5.
I am aware that minor changes in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without departing from the nature and spirit of my invention.
lllhat I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a shaft, a cylindrical member mounted thereon, means for adjusting said cylindrical member longitudinally of said shaft, said cylindrical member being provided with longitudinal grooves which are T-shaped in cross section, a plurality of nuts carried loosely in the bottom of said grooves, an elastic printing surface provided with a metal backing extending beyond the edges of said printing sur face mounted on said cylindrical member, a
pair of independently adjustable split rings mounted upon said cylindrical member an provided with screws adapted to engage the nuts whereby said rings are adapted to be clamped down upon the ends of the metal backing plate to clamp it in position upon the cylindrical member, the construction being such that the rings are independently movable and the printing surface longitudinally and circumferentially adjustable upon the cylindrical member.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 51st day of January, 1911.
JACOB RANZ.
