Description

PRIoEDn-Mrsn'r, orV ERIE, .rE'NN'sYL'vANIa i lLette/rs` Patent No. 103,307, dated May 24, 187.0.
4The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same Toall whom it may concerne Beit known that I, PRICE DEMnsEY, of Erie, in
the county 'of Eric `and State of Pennsylvania, have invented 'a newand useful Improvement in Stove- Grates; and'I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full,\clear,a`nd exact description thereof, Awhichwill enablethose skilledjnthe art to make andfuse the saine, reference being had to the accompanying draw'- ings formingpart of this specification. v U
This inventionrelates'to improvements in stovegrates, and 4has forits'obje'et to provide an arrangement ot' that class of grateswhich revolve horizontally, whereby the ash` and cinder may be more. readily .1t-is also deglllfa t0 IlI'Ovdea simple and cheap construction.v v
Theinvention comprises. -the'combination, with a` circular rim having radial projections toward the center, but stopping short of it, leaving allarge cen- 'tral'spacey4 of a grate, oscillating in a vertical plane, mounted on a shaft, supported at' the circular part; and having a socketin one end for theinsertion of, a' handle for imparting oscillating 'motion to both parts of. the grate, as hereinafter specified.V
Figure l'represents'a 'sectional elevation of 4m y irnproved grate. 4
Figuref2 represents a plan view 'of the same; and
Y Figurerepresen'ts aplan riew` of a modified arrangement of the grate.
` Similar` letters of reference `indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a'cast-metal grate,A provided with' ra-l dial gratefbar projections B, pointing toward the center, but stopping Ashort of it, leavinga central space -which I suspend on arms Gla hollow conical center,- D, preferably with a concavev top, having a verticalopening to admit-the air throughout it from the hcl low space below. Y y 1 4The arms C are so arranged in lbearings on the part l A, that they may be used to impart oscillating motion to the said part A in a horizontalplane, or to the central partD in a vertical plane, whereby the agitai `tion of the iirc will be more intense, and being in places opposed to each other, will have a more thorough eect than ,any present arrangement.
'lhe rim of the part A'rests on projections F, on
v the inside of the shell of the stove.
l In the plan' represented in fig. 2, the shaft or arms are enlarged from the connection with the center outward, corresponding with the increase of the space -due to the'radial lines of the projections' each side of them..
In fig. 3, I have represented'one of the rear arms as supported in aprojection, B, andthe other arm without the enlargement. Y
I have also represented perforations in the projections B, which are mere differences of construction,
either of whichl propose to make use of; as I prefer.
The construct-ion or form of the cone of the central grate is such that, when oscillated in a vertical plane, the re is supported by one side of the cone, while a l'arge opening is made on the other side of the central grate, and between said central grate and outer riin or radial points, `through which opening impurities in thecoal or slag in the fire may he removed without dumping the entire grate.
Having thus described my invention,y
IWhat I claim as new, 'and desire to secure by Let- 1 ters Patent, is- 1.l The combination, lwith the circular grate arranged for oscillation horizontally, and providedwith the openings at the center, of the center D, arranged to turn with the part A, andto oscillate in a vertical plane, substantially as specified.I
' 2. `The construction or form ofthe .cone of the central grate, so that, when oscillated in avertical plane,"
thefirc is supported by one side of the cone, while a large opening is made on the other side of the central grate, and between lsaid central grate and outer rim or radial parts, snbstantiallyas specified.
. PRICE DEMPSEY.
